Genesis 6

When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them,

Quand les hommes commencèrent à se multiplier sur la terre et qu’ils eurent des filles,

the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.

les fils de Dieu^[a] virent que les filles des hommes étaient belles, et ils prirent pour femmes celles qu’ils choisirent parmi elles.

Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with^[a] humans forever, for they are mortal^[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

Alors l’Eternel dit : Mon Esprit ne va pas lutter indéfiniment avec les hommes^[b], à cause de leurs fautes. Ce ne sont que des créatures terrestres. Je ne leur donne plus que cent vingt ans à vivre.

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

A cette époque-là, il y avait des géants sur la terre, et aussi après que les fils de Dieu se furent unis aux filles des hommes et qu’elles leur eurent donné des enfants. Ce sont ces héros si fameux d’autrefois.

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

L’Eternel vit que les hommes faisaient de plus en plus de mal sur la terre : à longueur de journée, leur cœur ne concevait que le mal.

The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.

Alors l’Eternel eut des regrets au sujet de l’homme qu’il avait fait sur la terre^[c], il en eut le cœur affligé.

So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”

Il dit alors : Je supprimerai de la surface de la terre les hommes que j’ai créés. Non seulement les hommes, mais jusqu’aux animaux, jusqu’aux bêtes qui se meuvent à ras de terre et jusqu’aux oiseaux du ciel, car je regrette de les avoir faits.

But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

This is the account of Noah and his family.

Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.

Voici l’histoire de la famille de Noé^[e]. Noé était un homme juste et irréprochable au milieu de ses contemporains. Il menait sa vie sous le regard de Dieu.

Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.

Il eut trois fils : Sem, Cham et Japhet.

Dieu veut sauver Noé

Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.

Aux yeux de Dieu, les hommes s’étaient corrompus et avaient rempli la terre d’actes de violence.

God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.

Dieu observait ce qui se passait sur la terre, il vit que le monde était corrompu, car toute l’humanité suivait la voie du mal.

So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.

Alors Dieu dit à Noé : C’est décidé ! Je vais mettre fin à l’existence de toutes les créatures car, à cause des hommes, la terre est remplie d’actes de violence. Je vais détruire la terre.

So make yourself an ark of cypress^[c] wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.

Mais toi, construis un bateau en bois résineux. Tu en diviseras l’intérieur en compartiments, et tu l’enduiras intérieurement et extérieurement de goudron.

This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.^[d]

Voici comment tu le feras : tu lui donneras cent cinquante mètres de longueur, vingt-cinq mètres de largeur et quinze mètres de hauteur^[f].

Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit^[e] high all around.^[f] Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks.

A cinquante centimètres^[g] du haut, tu ménageras un jour. Tu mettras la porte du bateau sur le côté. A l’intérieur, tu disposeras un étage inférieur, un premier et un second étage.

I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.

Moi, je vais faire venir le déluge des eaux sur la terre pour détruire, sous le ciel, tout être animé de vie. Tout ce qui est sur la terre périra.

But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.

Mais j’établirai mon alliance avec toi et tu entreras dans le bateau, toi, tes fils, ta femme et tes belles-filles avec toi.

You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.

Tu feras aussi entrer dans le bateau un couple de tous les êtres vivants, c’est-à-dire un mâle et une femelle de tous les animaux, pour qu’ils restent en vie avec toi.

Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.

De chaque espèce d’oiseaux, de quadrupèdes et d’animaux qui se meuvent à ras de terre, un couple viendra vers toi pour pouvoir rester en vie.

You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”

Procure-toi aussi toutes sortes d’aliments et fais-en provision pour vous en nourrir, toi et eux.

Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

Noé obéit, il fit tout comme Dieu le lui avait ordonné^[h].
