Genesis 48

Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him.

Peu après cela, on vint prévenir Joseph que son père était malade. Il prit avec lui ses deux fils Manassé et Ephraïm.

When Jacob was told, “Your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.

On annonça à Jacob que son fils Joseph venait le voir. Israël rassembla ses forces et s’assit sur sa couche.

Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty^[a] appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me

Jacob dit à Joseph : Le Dieu tout-puissant m’est apparu à Louz au pays de Canaan et il m’a béni^[a].

and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’

Il m’a dit : « Je te rends fécond et te multiplierai, je te ferai devenir une multitude de peuples et, après toi, je donnerai ce pays pour toujours en propriété à ta descendance. »

“Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.

Et maintenant, les deux fils qui te sont nés en Egypte, avant mon arrivée ici, je les adopte comme miens. Ephraïm et Manassé seront mes fils au même titre que Ruben et Siméon^[b].

Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers.

Quant aux enfants qui te naîtront après eux, ils seront à toi. C’est au nom de leurs frères aînés qu’ils recevront leur part d’héritage.

As I was returning from Paddan,^[b] to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath” (that is, Bethlehem).

Car lorsque je revenais de Paddân-Aram, j’eus la douleur de voir Rachel mourir au pays de Canaan à peu de distance d’Ephrata. C’est là, sur le chemin d’Ephrata – qui s’appelle Bethléhem – que je l’ai enterrée.

When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, “Who are these?”

Israël regarda les fils de Joseph et demanda : Qui est-ce ?

“They are the sons God has given me here,” Joseph said to his father.

Then Israel said, “Bring them to me so I may bless them.”

Joseph lui répondit : Ce sont les fils que Dieu m’a donnés dans ce pays.

– Fais-les approcher, je te prie, dit Jacob, pour que je les bénisse.

Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them.

La vue d’Israël était affaiblie par l’âge de sorte qu’il n’y voyait plus. Il les fit donc approcher de lui et les embrassa.

Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children too.”

Israël dit à Joseph : Je ne m’imaginais pas te revoir et voici que Dieu me fait voir même tes descendants.

Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees and bowed down with his face to the ground.

Joseph reprit ses deux enfants d’entre les genoux^[c] de son père et se prosterna face contre terre.

And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right toward Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them close to him.

Puis il les prit tous les deux, Ephraïm à sa droite – donc à gauche d’Israël – et Manassé à sa gauche – donc à la droite de son père – et les fit approcher de lui.

But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.

Mais Israël tendit la main droite et la posa sur la tête d’Ephraïm, qui était le plus jeune, et sa main gauche sur la tête de Manassé. Il croisa donc ses mains, bien que Manassé fût l’aîné.

Then he blessed Joseph and said,

When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.

Joseph remarqua que son père avait posé sa main droite sur la tête d’Ephraïm. Cela lui déplut et il prit la main de son père pour la faire passer de la tête d’Ephraïm sur celle de Manassé.

Joseph said to him, “No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”

Il dit à son père : Pas ainsi, mon père, c’est celui-là l’aîné ; mets donc ta main droite sur sa tête.

But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations.”

Mais son père refusa et dit : Je sais, mon fils, je sais. Celui-là aussi deviendra un peuple ! Lui aussi sera grand. Pourtant son frère cadet sera plus grand que lui et sa descendance formera plusieurs peuples.

He blessed them that day and said,

So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

Ce jour-là, il les bénit ainsi :

Le peuple d’Israël vous nommera dans ses bénédictions en disant : « Que Dieu te rende semblable à Ephraïm et à Manassé ! »

Ainsi il plaça Ephraïm avant Manassé.

Then Israel said to Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you^[d] and take you^[e] back to the land of your^[f] fathers.

Puis Israël dit à Joseph : Je vais bientôt mourir. Dieu sera avec vous et vous fera retourner au pays de vos ancêtres.

And to you I give one more ridge of land^[g] than to your brothers, the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.”

Quant à moi, je te donne une part de plus qu’à tes frères : Sichem^[d], que j’ai conquise sur les Amoréens avec mon épée et mon arc.
