Genesis 40

Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt.

Quelque temps après, deux hauts fonctionnaires du pharaon, le chef des échansons et le chef des panetiers, commirent une faute envers leur maître

Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker,

qui fut très irrité contre eux

and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined.

et les fit jeter dans la prison du commandant de la garde où Joseph était incarcéré.

The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them.

After they had been in custody for some time,

Celui-ci les confia aux soins de Joseph qui s’occupa d’eux. Ils passèrent un certain temps en prison.

each of the two men—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison—had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.

Une nuit, l’échanson et le panetier du pharaon détenus dans la prison firent tous deux un rêve, chacun le sien, ayant sa signification propre.

When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected.

Le lendemain matin, quand Joseph se rendit auprès d’eux, il remarqua qu’ils étaient soucieux.

So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?”

Joseph demanda donc aux hauts fonctionnaires du pharaon qui se trouvaient en prison avec lui dans la maison de son maître : Pourquoi avez-vous cet air sombre aujourd’hui ?

“We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.”

Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”

Ils lui répondirent : Nous avons fait un rêve et il n’y a ici personne pour nous l’interpréter.

– N’appartient-il pas à Dieu de donner l’interprétation des rêves ? leur dit Joseph. Racontez-les moi donc, je vous prie.

So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, “In my dream I saw a vine in front of me,

Alors le chef des échansons lui raconta ce qu’il avait rêvé.

– Dans mon rêve, lui dit-il, j’avais devant moi un cep de vigne

and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes.

portant trois sarments. Il se mit à bourgeonner, à fleurir, puis ses grappes donnèrent des raisins mûrs.

Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand.”

Je tenais en main la coupe du pharaon, je cueillis les raisins, j’en pressai le jus dans la coupe du pharaon et je la présentai à mon maître.

“This is what it means,” Joseph said to him. “The three branches are three days.

Joseph lui dit : Voici ce que signifie ce rêve : Les trois sarments représentent trois jours.

Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.

Dans trois jours, le pharaon te permettra de relever la tête et te rétablira dans tes fonctions. Tu lui présenteras sa coupe comme le veut la charge que tu occupais auparavant en qualité d’échanson.

But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison.

Mais, s’il te plaît, pense à moi quand tout ira de nouveau bien pour toi et aie la bonté de parler en ma faveur au pharaon pour me faire sortir de cette prison.

I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.”

En effet, j’ai été amené de force du pays des Hébreux, et ici même je n’ai rien fait qui mérite le cachot.

When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread.^[a]

Lorsque le chef des panetiers vit que Joseph avait donné une interprétation favorable du songe, il lui dit : Pour ma part, dans mon rêve, je portais trois corbeilles de pain blanc sur la tête.

In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”

Dans celle du dessus, il y avait de la nourriture préparée par un panetier et destinée au pharaon ; et les oiseaux venaient les picorer dans la corbeille qui reposait sur ma tête.

“This is what it means,” Joseph said. “The three baskets are three days.

Joseph lui dit : Voici ce que signifie ce rêve : Les trois corbeilles représentent trois jours.

Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away your flesh.”

Dans trois jours, le pharaon élèvera ta tête au-dessus de toi, il te pendra à un arbre et les oiseaux viendront se repaître de ta chair.

Now the third day was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials:

Trois jours plus tard, à l’occasion de son anniversaire, le pharaon offrit un festin à tous ses grands. Il « éleva la tête » du chef des échansons et du chef des panetiers en présence de ses grands.

He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand—

Il rétablit dans sa fonction le chef des échansons, qui lui présenta de nouveau sa coupe,

but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.

et il fit pendre le chef des panetiers. Les choses se passèrent conformément à l’interprétation que Joseph avait donnée de leurs rêves.

The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.

Mais le chef des échansons ne pensa plus à Joseph : il l’oublia.
