Genesis 31

Jacob heard that Laban’s sons were saying, “Jacob has taken everything our father owned and has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father.”

Jacob apprit que les fils de Laban disaient : Jacob s’est emparé de tout ce qui appartenait à notre père et c’est avec le bien de notre père qu’il s’est acquis toute cette richesse.

And Jacob noticed that Laban’s attitude toward him was not what it had been.

Il remarqua que l’attitude de Laban envers lui n’était plus comme avant.

Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”

L’Eternel lui dit : Retourne au pays de tes pères, auprès de ta parenté, et je serai avec toi.

So Jacob sent word to Rachel and Leah to come out to the fields where his flocks were.

Alors Jacob fit venir Rachel et Léa aux champs où il était avec ses troupeaux

He said to them, “I see that your father’s attitude toward me is not what it was before, but the God of my father has been with me.

et il leur dit : Je vois que votre père n’a plus envers moi la même attitude qu’auparavant. Mais le Dieu de mon père a été avec moi.

You know that I’ve worked for your father with all my strength,

Vous savez vous-mêmes que j’ai servi votre père de toutes mes forces,

yet your father has cheated me by changing my wages ten times. However, God has not allowed him to harm me.

tandis que lui m’a trompé : par dix fois, il a changé les conditions de mon salaire. Heureusement, Dieu ne lui a pas permis de me causer du tort.

If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks gave birth to speckled young; and if he said, ‘The streaked ones will be your wages,’ then all the flocks bore streaked young.

Quand votre père affirmait : « Les bêtes tachetées constitueront ton salaire », toutes les bêtes mettaient bas des petits tachetés. Et quand il affirmait : « Les mouchetés seront ton salaire », toutes les bêtes faisaient des petits mouchetés.

So God has taken away your father’s livestock and has given them to me.

Ainsi, c’est Dieu qui a pris le bétail de votre père et qui me l’a donné.

“In breeding season I once had a dream in which I looked up and saw that the male goats mating with the flock were streaked, speckled or spotted.

En effet, à l’époque où les bêtes s’accouplent, j’ai vu en songe que les boucs qui couvraient les brebis étaient mouchetés, tachetés, ou marquetés.

The angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob.’ I answered, ‘Here I am.’

L’ange de Dieu m’appela dans ce rêve : « Jacob ! » Et j’ai répondu : « J’écoute. »

And he said, ‘Look up and see that all the male goats mating with the flock are streaked, speckled or spotted, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.

« Lève les yeux, dit-il, et regarde : tous les boucs qui couvrent le troupeau sont mouchetés, tachetés, ou marquetés, car j’ai vu tout ce que te fait Laban.

I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and where you made a vow to me. Now leave this land at once and go back to your native land.’”

Je suis le Dieu de Béthel, où tu as répandu de l’huile sur une pierre dressée en stèle, et où tu m’as fait un vœu. Maintenant, lève-toi, quitte ce pays et retourne dans ton pays natal. »

Then Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we still have any share in the inheritance of our father’s estate?

Rachel et Léa lui répondirent : Avons-nous encore quelque chose, ou un héritage, chez notre père ?

Does he not regard us as foreigners? Not only has he sold us, but he has used up what was paid for us.

Ne nous a-t-il pas traitées comme des étrangères puisqu’il nous a vendues ? Et, de plus, il a mangé notre argent^[a].

Surely all the wealth that God took away from our father belongs to us and our children. So do whatever God has told you.”

Tous les biens que Dieu a sauvés de notre père nous appartiennent, à nous et à nos enfants. Maintenant, donc, fais tout ce que Dieu t’a demandé.

Then Jacob put his children and his wives on camels,

Alors Jacob se mit en route : il fit monter ses enfants et ses femmes sur les chameaux ;

and he drove all his livestock ahead of him, along with all the goods he had accumulated in Paddan Aram,^[a] to go to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan.

il emmena tout son bétail et tous les biens qu’il avait acquis, en particulier, le cheptel qu’il avait amassé pendant son séjour à Paddân-Aram, pour rentrer chez son père Isaac au pays de Canaan.

When Laban had gone to shear his sheep, Rachel stole her father’s household gods.

Quant à Laban, il était parti tondre ses moutons. En partant, Rachel vola les idoles domestiques^[b] de son père.

Moreover, Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him he was running away.

Ainsi Jacob partit à la dérobée sans informer Laban l’Araméen de sa fuite.

So he fled with all he had, crossed the Euphrates River, and headed for the hill country of Gilead.

Laban Pursues Jacob

Il s’enfuit avec tout ce qui lui appartenait, il traversa l’Euphrate, puis se dirigea vers les monts de Galaad.

Jacob rejoint par Laban

On the third day Laban was told that Jacob had fled.

Le troisième jour, on avertit Laban que Jacob s’était enfui.

Taking his relatives with him, he pursued Jacob for seven days and caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.

Il prit avec lui des hommes de sa famille, le poursuivit pendant sept jours et le rattrapa dans les monts de Galaad.

Then God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, “Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.”

Mais, pendant la nuit, Dieu vint parler à Laban l’Araméen dans un rêve. Il lui dit : Garde-toi de dire quoi que ce soit à Jacob, en bien ou en mal.

Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead when Laban overtook him, and Laban and his relatives camped there too.

Quand Laban atteignit Jacob, celui-ci avait dressé sa tente dans la montagne. Laban et ses hommes s’installèrent eux aussi dans les monts de Galaad.

Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done? You’ve deceived me, and you’ve carried off my daughters like captives in war.

Laban interpella Jacob : Qu’est-ce qui t’a pris ? Pourquoi m’as-tu trompé ? Tu as emmené mes filles comme des captives de guerre !

Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me, so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels and harps?

Pourquoi t’es-tu enfui en cachette ? Tu es parti comme un voleur sans me prévenir ! Je t’aurais laissé partir dans la joie avec des chants, au son du tambourin et de la lyre.

You didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. You have done a foolish thing.

Tu ne m’as même pas laissé embrasser mes petits-enfants et mes filles ! Vraiment, tu as agi de façon stupide !

I have the power to harm you; but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’

Je pourrais vous faire du mal, mais le Dieu de votre père m’a parlé la nuit dernière et m’a dit : « Garde-toi de ne rien dire à Jacob ni en bien ni en mal. »

Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s household. But why did you steal my gods?”

Maintenant, si tu es parti parce que tu languissais après la maison de ton père, pourquoi m’as-tu volé mes dieux ?

Jacob answered Laban, “I was afraid, because I thought you would take your daughters away from me by force.

Jacob répliqua : J’avais peur que tu m’enlèves tes filles.

But if you find anyone who has your gods, that person shall not live. In the presence of our relatives, see for yourself whether there is anything of yours here with me; and if so, take it.” Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen the gods.

Quant à celui chez qui tu trouveras tes dieux, il ne vivra pas. Fouille en présence de nos gens ! Ce qui sera chez moi, reprends-le !

Jacob ignorait en effet que Rachel avait volé les idoles domestiques.

So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent and into the tent of the two female servants, but he found nothing. After he came out of Leah’s tent, he entered Rachel’s tent.

Laban fouilla la tente de Jacob, celle de Léa, puis celle des deux servantes, et ne trouva rien. En sortant de la tente de Léa, il entra dans celle de Rachel.

Now Rachel had taken the household gods and put them inside her camel’s saddle and was sitting on them. Laban searched through everything in the tent but found nothing.

Or Rachel avait pris les idoles et les avait cachées dans la selle du chameau et s’était assise dessus. Laban fouilla toute la tente sans rien trouver.

Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord, that I cannot stand up in your presence; I’m having my period.” So he searched but could not find the household gods.

Elle dit à son père : Que mon seigneur ne se fâche pas si je ne peux pas me lever devant toi car j’ai ce qui arrive habituellement aux femmes.

Il fouilla, mais ne trouva pas les idoles.

Jacob was angry and took Laban to task. “What is my crime?” he asked Laban. “How have I wronged you that you hunt me down?

Alors Jacob se mit en colère et fit de violents reproches à Laban : Quelle faute ai-je commise, s’écria-t-il, qu’ai-je fait de mal pour que tu t’acharnes ainsi contre moi ?

Now that you have searched through all my goods, what have you found that belongs to your household? Put it here in front of your relatives and mine, and let them judge between the two of us.

Tu as fouillé toutes mes affaires. As-tu rien trouvé qui t’appartienne ? Produis-le ici en présence de mes gens et des tiens, et qu’ils servent d’arbitres entre nous deux.

“I have been with you for twenty years now. Your sheep and goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks.

Voilà vingt années que je suis chez toi ; tes brebis et tes chèvres n’ont pas avorté, et je n’ai jamais mangé les béliers de ton troupeau.

I did not bring you animals torn by wild beasts; I bore the loss myself. And you demanded payment from me for whatever was stolen by day or night.

Si une bête se faisait déchirer par une bête sauvage, je ne te la rapportais pas^[c] : c’est moi qui t’en dédommageais. Tu me réclamais ce qu’on m’avait volé de jour et ce qui m’avait été volé la nuit.

This was my situation: The heat consumed me in the daytime and the cold at night, and sleep fled from my eyes.

Le jour, j’étais dévoré par la chaleur ; la nuit, par le froid, et je ne pouvais pas dormir.

It was like this for the twenty years I was in your household. I worked for you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flocks, and you changed my wages ten times.

Voilà vingt ans que je suis chez toi : pendant quatorze ans, je t’ai servi pour tes deux filles, puis pendant six ans pour ton bétail ; dix fois, tu as changé mon salaire.

If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed. But God has seen my hardship and the toil of my hands, and last night he rebuked you.”

Si le Dieu de mon père, le Dieu d’Abraham et celui que redoute Isaac, n’avait été de mon côté, tu m’aurais renvoyé aujourd’hui les mains vides. Mais Dieu a vu ma misère et avec quelle peine j’ai travaillé. La nuit dernière, il a prononcé son verdict.

Jacob fait alliance avec Laban

Laban answered Jacob, “The women are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks. All you see is mine. Yet what can I do today about these daughters of mine, or about the children they have borne?

– Ces filles sont mes filles, répondit Laban, ces fils mes fils, ces troupeaux sont miens et tout ce que tu vois est à moi. Et que puis-je faire aujourd’hui pour mes filles et pour les enfants qu’elles ont mis au monde ?

Come now, let’s make a covenant, you and I, and let it serve as a witness between us.”

Maintenant donc, viens, concluons une alliance, toi et moi, et laissons ici un signe qui nous serve de témoin à tous deux.

So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.

Alors Jacob prit une pierre et l’érigea en stèle.

He said to his relatives, “Gather some stones.” So they took stones and piled them in a heap, and they ate there by the heap.

Puis il dit aux siens : Ramassez des pierres !

Ils ramassèrent des pierres, les entassèrent et, tous ensemble, ils mangèrent^[d] là sur ce tas de pierres.

Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha, and Jacob called it Galeed.^[b]

Laban le nomma Yegar-Sahadouta (Le tas de pierres du témoignage) et Jacob l’appela Galed (Le tas de pierres-témoin).

Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me today.” That is why it was called Galeed.

Laban déclara : Ce tas de pierres sert aujourd’hui de témoin entre toi et moi.

C’est pourquoi on le nomma Galed.

It was also called Mizpah,^[c] because he said, “May the Lord keep watch between you and me when we are away from each other.

On l’appelle aussi Mitspa (Le lieu du guet), car Laban avait dit encore : Que l’Eternel fasse le guet entre nous deux quand nous nous serons perdus de vue l’un et l’autre.

If you mistreat my daughters or if you take any wives besides my daughters, even though no one is with us, remember that God is a witness between you and me.”

Si tu maltraites mes filles et si tu prends d’autres femmes en plus d’elles, ce n’est pas un homme qui nous servira d’arbitre, prends-y garde : c’est Dieu qui sera témoin entre moi et toi.

Laban also said to Jacob, “Here is this heap, and here is this pillar I have set up between you and me.

Puis il ajouta : Vois ce tas de pierres et cette stèle que j’ai dressés entre moi et toi.

This heap is a witness, and this pillar is a witness, that I will not go past this heap to your side to harm you and that you will not go past this heap and pillar to my side to harm me.

Ce tas de pierres et cette stèle nous serviront de témoins. Je ne dois pas dépasser ce tas de pierres et cette stèle dans ta direction, et tu ne dois pas les dépasser dans ma direction avec de mauvaises intentions.

May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.”

So Jacob took an oath in the name of the Fear of his father Isaac.

Le Dieu d’Abraham et le dieu de Nahor^[e] – c’était le Dieu de leur père^[f] – seront juges entre nous !

Jacob prêta serment par le Dieu que redoutait son père Isaac.

He offered a sacrifice there in the hill country and invited his relatives to a meal. After they had eaten, they spent the night there.

Puis il offrit un sacrifice sur la montagne et invita sa parenté à un repas. Ils mangèrent ensemble et passèrent la nuit sur la montagne.

Early the next morning Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters and blessed them. Then he left and returned home.^[d]
