Genesis 30

When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”

Lorsque Rachel vit qu’elle ne donnait pas d’enfant à Jacob, elle devint jalouse de sa sœur et elle dit à son mari : Donne-moi des enfants, sinon j’en mourrai.

Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?”

Jacob se fâcha contre elle et dit : Est-ce que je suis à la place de Dieu, lui qui t’empêche d’avoir des enfants ?

Then she said, “Here is Bilhah, my servant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.”

– Alors, suggéra-t-elle, voici ma servante Bilha, unis-toi à elle pour qu’elle ait un enfant dont elle accouchera sur mes genoux, et j’aurai, moi aussi, un enfant par son intermédiaire^[a].

So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her,

Elle lui donna donc Bilha, sa servante, pour femme, et Jacob s’unit à elle.

and she became pregnant and bore him a son.

Bilha devint enceinte et donna un fils à Jacob.

Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son.” Because of this she named him Dan.^[a]

Rachel s’écria : Dieu a défendu mon droit. Et même, il m’a exaucée et m’a donné un fils.

C’est pourquoi elle l’appela Dan (Il juge).

Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.

Puis Bilha, sa servante, devint de nouveau enceinte et donna un second fils à Jacob.

Then Rachel said, “I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.” So she named him Naphtali.^[b]

Rachel dit : J’ai livré un combat divin contre ma sœur ; et j’ai vaincu.

Elle nomma ce fils Nephtali (Il lutte).

When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

Quand Léa vit qu’elle s’était arrêtée d’avoir des enfants, elle prit sa servante Zilpa et la donna à Jacob pour femme.

Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.

Zilpa donna un fils à Jacob.

Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”^[c] So she named him Gad.^[d]

Et Léa dit : Quelle chance !

Et elle le nomma Gad (Chance).

Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.

Puis Zilpa donna un second fils à Jacob.

Then Leah said, “How happy I am! The women will call me happy.” So she named him Asher.^[e]

Léa s’écria : Que je suis heureuse ! Car les femmes me diront bienheureuse.

Et elle l’appela Aser (Bienheureux).

During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

Au temps de la moisson des blés, Ruben sortit dans les champs et il trouva des mandragores, il les apporta à sa mère. Rachel dit à Léa : Donne-moi, s’il te plaît, quelques-unes des mandragores^[b] que ton fils a apportées.

But she said to her, “Wasn’t it enough that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”

“Very well,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”

Léa lui répondit : Est-ce qu’il ne te suffit pas de m’avoir pris mon mari ? Il faut que tu prennes encore les mandragores de mon fils ?

Rachel lui dit : Eh bien ! Jacob couchera avec toi cette nuit en échange des mandragores de ton fils.

So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he slept with her that night.

Le soir, quand Jacob revint des champs, Léa sortit à sa rencontre et lui dit : Tu viendras vers moi cette nuit, car je t’ai obtenu au prix des mandragores de mon fils.

Il coucha donc avec elle cette nuit-là.

God listened to Leah, and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son.

Et Dieu exauça Léa : elle devint enceinte et donna un cinquième fils à Jacob.

Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.^[f]

Elle dit : Dieu m’a payé mon salaire pour avoir donné ma servante à mon mari.

Et elle appela ce fils Issacar (Homme de salaire).

Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son.

Elle fut de nouveau enceinte et donna un sixième fils à Jacob.

Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor, because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.^[g]

– Dieu m’a accordé un riche présent, s’écria-t-elle, désormais mon mari m’honorera, puisque je lui ai donné six fils.

Et elle appela cet enfant Zabulon (Honneur^[c]).

Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.

Plus tard, elle eut une fille qu’elle nomma Dina.

Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and enabled her to conceive.

Alors Dieu intervint finalement en faveur de Rachel, il l’exauça et lui accorda la possibilité d’avoir des enfants.

She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.”

Elle devint enceinte et donna naissance à un fils en disant : Dieu a enlevé ma honte.

She named him Joseph,^[h] and said, “May the Lord add to me another son.”

Jacob’s Flocks Increase

Elle le nomma Joseph (Il ajoute^[d]) en priant : Que l’Eternel m’ajoute un autre fils !

Jacob s’enrichit

After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland.

Après la naissance de Joseph, Jacob dit à Laban : Laisse-moi retourner chez moi, dans mon pays.

Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you, and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.”

Donne-moi mes femmes – pour lesquelles j’ai travaillé chez toi – et mes enfants, et je m’en irai ; car tu sais bien comment j’ai travaillé pour toi.

But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you.”

Laban lui dit : Si tu veux bien me faire une faveur, reste ici. J’ai appris par divination que c’est à cause de toi que l’Eternel m’a béni.

He added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.”

Et il ajouta : Fixe-moi ton salaire, et je te le donnerai.

Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care.

Jacob lui dit : Tu sais toi-même comment je t’ai servi, et ce que ton cheptel est devenu grâce à moi.

The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?”

Car tu avais bien peu de chose à mon arrivée, mais tes biens se sont considérablement accrus. L’Eternel t’a béni depuis que je suis chez toi. Mais à présent, il est temps que je travaille moi aussi pour ma propre famille.

“What shall I give you?” he asked.

“Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them:

Laban lui demanda : Que faut-il te donner ?

– Tu n’auras rien à me donner, répondit Jacob. Si tu acceptes ma proposition, je continuerai à paître tes troupeaux et à m’en occuper.

Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat. They will be my wages.

Si tu veux, je passerai aujourd’hui tout ton troupeau en revue, je mettrai à part toutes les jeunes bêtes tachetées ou bigarrées : tous les agneaux de couleur foncée, ainsi que toutes les chèvres bigarrées ou tachetées. Ils constitueront mon salaire.

And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored, will be considered stolen.”

Ainsi il te sera facile de contrôler mon honnêteté. Demain, tu viendras inspecter mon salaire : si tu trouves chez moi une chèvre qui ne soit pas tachetée ou bigarrée, ou un agneau qui ne soit pas de couleur foncée, tu pourras les considérer comme volés.

“Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.”

Laban dit : D’accord ! Fais comme tu l’as dit.

That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs, and he placed them in the care of his sons.

Mais le jour même, Laban retira du troupeau les boucs mouchetés ou bigarrés, toutes les chèvres tachetées ou bigarrées, tout ce qui était mêlé de blanc et tous les agneaux de couleur foncée, et il les remit entre les mains de ses fils.

Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks.

Puis il mit une distance de trois journées de marche entre lui et Jacob, lequel continua à s’occuper du reste de ses troupeaux.

Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches.

Jacob se procura des rameaux verts de peuplier, d’amandier et de platane et en pela l’écorce par endroits, laissant apparaître l’aubier blanc des branches.

Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink,

Il plaça ces rameaux sous les yeux des bêtes dans les auges et les abreuvoirs où elles venaient boire ; celles-ci entraient en chaleur en venant boire.

they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.

Les bêtes s’accouplaient devant ces rameaux. Lorsqu’elles mettaient bas, leurs petits étaient mouchetés, tachetés ou bigarrés.

Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals.

Jacob sépara les agneaux. Dans le troupeau de Laban, il obtint de plus en plus de bêtes mouchetées et foncées^[e]. Il se constitua ainsi des troupeaux à lui, qu’il ne mêla pas à ceux de Laban.

Whenever the stronger females were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches,

Chaque fois que des bêtes vigoureuses s’accouplaient, Jacob plaçait les rameaux sous leurs yeux dans les auges pour qu’elles s’accouplent devant les rameaux.

but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob.

Quand les brebis étaient chétives, il ne les mettait pas. Ainsi les bêtes chétives revenaient à Laban et les robustes à Jacob.

In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.

De cette manière, ce dernier s’enrichit considérablement, il posséda de nombreux troupeaux, des servantes et des serviteurs, des chameaux et des ânes.
