Verse 1

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

Le Serpent^[a] était le plus astucieux^[b] de tous les animaux des champs que l’Eternel Dieu avait faits. Il demanda à la femme : Vraiment, Dieu vous a dit : « Vous n’avez pas le droit de manger du fruit de tous les arbres du jardin ! » ?

Verse 2

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,

La femme répondit au Serpent : Nous mangeons des fruits des arbres du jardin,

Verse 3

but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

mais celui qui est au milieu du jardin Dieu a dit de ne pas manger de son fruit et de ne pas y toucher sinon nous mourrons.

Verse 4

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.

Alors le Serpent dit à la femme : Mais pas du tout ! Vous ne mourrez pas !

Verse 5

“For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Seulement Dieu sait bien que le jour où vous en mangerez, vos yeux s’ouvriront et vous serez comme Dieu, décidant vous-mêmes ce qui est bien ou mal^[c].

Verse 6

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

Alors la femme vit que le fruit de l’arbre était bon à manger, agréable aux yeux, et qu’il était précieux pour ouvrir l’intelligence. Elle prit donc de son fruit et en mangea. Elle en donna aussi à son mari qui était avec elle, et il en mangea^[d].

Verse 7

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Alors les yeux de tous deux s’ouvrirent et ils se rendirent compte qu’ils étaient nus. Ils se firent donc des pagnes en cousant ensemble des feuilles de figuier.

Verse 8

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

Au moment de la brise du soir, ils entendirent la voix de l’Eternel Dieu parcourant le jardin. Alors l’homme et sa femme se cachèrent de l’Eternel Dieu parmi les arbres du jardin.

Verse 9

But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

Mais l’Eternel Dieu appela l’homme et lui demanda : Où es-tu ?

Verse 10

He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

Celui-ci répondit : J’ai entendu ta voix dans le jardin et j’ai eu peur, car je suis nu ; alors je me suis caché.

Verse 11

And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

Dieu dit : Qui t’a appris que tu es nu ? Aurais-tu mangé du fruit de l’arbre dont je t’avais défendu de manger ?

Verse 12

The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

Adam répondit : La femme que tu as placée auprès de moi, c’est elle qui m’en a donné, et j’en ai mangé.

Verse 13

Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

L’Eternel Dieu dit à la femme : Pourquoi as-tu fait cela ?

– C’est le Serpent qui m’a trompée, répondit la femme, et j’en ai mangé.

Verse 14

So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed are you above all livestock
    and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
    and you will eat dust
    all the days of your life.

Alors l’Eternel Dieu dit au Serpent :

Puisque toi, tu as fait cela,
tu es maudit ^|parmi tout le bétail
et tous les animaux sauvages :
tu te traîneras sur le ventre,
tu mangeras de la poussière
tout au long de ta vie.

Verse 15

And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring^[a] and hers;
he will crush^[b] your head,
    and you will strike his heel.”

Je susciterai de l’hostilité ^|entre toi et la femme,
entre ta descendance^[e] ^|et sa descendance.
Celle-ci t’écrasera la tête,
et tu lui mordras^[f] le talon.

Verse 16

To the woman he said,

“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”

Dieu dit à la femme :

Je rendrai tes grossesses très pénibles
et c’est dans la souffrance ^|que tu mettras au monde tes enfants.
Tes attentes seront tournées vers ton mari,
mais lui, il te dominera.

Verse 17

To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’

“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.

Il dit à Adam : Puisque tu as écouté ta femme et que tu as mangé du fruit de l’arbre dont je t’avais défendu de manger,

le sol est maudit à cause de toi.
C’est avec peine ^|que tu en tireras ta nourriture
tout au long de ta vie.

Verse 18

It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.

Il te produira des épines ^|et des chardons ;
et tu mangeras des produits du sol.

Verse 19

By the sweat of your brow
    you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
    since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
    and to dust you will return.”

Tu en tireras ton pain à la sueur de ton front
jusqu’à ce que tu retournes à la terre,
puisque tu as été tiré de celle-ci.
Car toi, tu es poussière
et tu retourneras à la poussière.

Verse 20

Adam^[c] named his wife Eve,^[d] because she would become the mother of all the living.

L’homme nomma sa femme Eve (Vie) ; elle est devenue en effet la mère de toute vie humaine.

Verse 21

The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

L’Eternel Dieu fit à Adam et à sa femme des vêtements de peau pour les habiller.

Verse 22

And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”

Puis il dit : Voici que l’homme est devenu comme l’un de nous pour décider du bien et du mal^[g]. Maintenant il ne faudrait pas qu’il tende la main pour cueillir aussi du fruit de l’arbre de la vie, qu’il en mange et qu’il vive éternellement.

Verse 23

So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

Alors l’Eternel Dieu le chassa du jardin d’Eden pour qu’il travaille le sol d’où il avait été tiré.

Verse 24

After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side^[e] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Après avoir chassé l’homme, il posta des chérubins à l’est du jardin d’Eden, avec une épée flamboyante tournoyant en tous sens pour barrer l’accès de l’arbre de la vie.
