Genesis 2

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Voici l’histoire de ce qui est advenu au ciel et sur la terre lorsqu’ils furent créés.

Au temps où l’Eternel Dieu fit la terre et le ciel,

Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth^[a] and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,

il n’existait encore sur la terre aucun arbuste, et aucune herbe des champs n’avait encore germé, car l’Eternel Dieu n’avait pas fait pleuvoir sur la terre, et il n’y avait pas d’homme pour cultiver la terre.

but streams^[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.

De l’eau se mit à sourdre et à irriguer toute la surface du sol.

Then the Lord God formed a man^[c] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

L’Eternel Dieu façonna l’homme avec de la poussière du sol, il lui insuffla dans les narines le souffle de vie, et l’homme devint un être vivant^[c].

Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.

L’Eternel Dieu planta un jardin vers l’orient : l’Eden, le pays des Délices. Il y plaça l’homme qu’il avait façonné.

The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

L’Eternel Dieu fit pousser du sol toutes sortes d’arbres portant des fruits d’aspect agréable et délicieux, et il mit l’arbre de la vie^[d] au milieu du jardin. Il y plaça aussi l’arbre de la détermination du bien et du mal^[e].

A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.

Du pays d’Eden sortait un fleuve qui arrosait le jardin. De là, il se divisait en quatre bras.

The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.

Le nom du premier est Pishôn : il contourne tout le pays de Havila où se trouve de l’or,

(The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin^[d] and onyx are also there.)

un or d’excellente qualité. On trouve aussi dans cette contrée de l’ambre parfumée et la pierre précieuse appelée onyx.

The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.^[e]

Le deuxième fleuve s’appelle Guihôn, il parcourt tout le pays de Koush^[f].

The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

Le troisième fleuve s’appelle le Tigre, c’est celui qui coule à l’orient de l’Assyrie.

Et le quatrième fleuve c’est l’Euphrate.

The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

L’Eternel Dieu prit l’homme et l’établit dans le jardin d’Eden pour le cultiver et le garder.

And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;

Et l’Eternel Dieu ordonna à l’homme : Mange librement des fruits de tous les arbres du jardin,

but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

sauf du fruit de l’arbre de la détermination du bien et du mal. De celui-là, n’en mange pas, car le jour où tu en mangeras, tu mourras.

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

L’Eternel Dieu dit : Il n’est pas bon que l’homme soit seul, je lui ferai une aide qui soit son vis-à-vis.

Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.

L’Eternel Dieu, qui avait façonné du sol tous les animaux des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel, les fit venir vers l’homme pour voir comment il les nommerait, afin que tout être vivant porte le nom que l’homme lui donnerait.

So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam^[f] no suitable helper was found.

L’homme donna donc un nom à tous les animaux domestiques, à tous les oiseaux du ciel et aux animaux sauvages. Mais il ne trouva pas d’aide qui soit son vis-à-vis.

So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs^[g] and then closed up the place with flesh.

Alors l’Eternel Dieu plongea l’homme dans un profond sommeil. Pendant que celui-ci dormait, il prit une de ses côtes^[g] et referma la chair à la place.

Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib^[h] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

L’Eternel Dieu forma une femme de la côte qu’il avait prise de l’homme, et il l’amena à l’homme.

The man said,

Alors l’homme s’écria :

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

C’est pourquoi l’homme laissera son père et sa mère et s’attachera à sa femme, et les deux ne feront plus qu’un^[h].

Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

L’homme et sa femme étaient tous deux nus sans en éprouver aucune honte.
