Genesis 22

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

Après ces événements, Dieu mit Abraham à l’épreuve^[a]. Il l’appela : Abraham !

Et celui-ci répondit : Me voici.

Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

– Prends Isaac, ton fils unique, que tu aimes, lui dit Dieu, et va au pays de Moriya. Là, tu me l’offriras en sacrifice sur l’une des collines, celle que je t’indiquerai^[b].

Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.

Le lendemain, Abraham se leva de grand matin, sella son âne et emmena deux de ses serviteurs ainsi que son fils Isaac ; il fendit du bois pour l’holocauste, puis il se mit en route en direction de l’endroit que Dieu lui avait indiqué.

On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

Après trois jours de marche, Abraham, levant les yeux, aperçut le lieu dans le lointain.

He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

Alors il dit à ses serviteurs : Restez ici avec l’âne ; le garçon et moi, nous irons jusque là-bas pour adorer Dieu, puis nous reviendrons vers vous.

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,

Abraham chargea le bois de l’holocauste sur son fils Isaac ; il prit lui-même des braises pour le feu et le couteau, puis tous deux s’en allèrent ensemble.

Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Isaac s’adressa à son père Abraham et lui dit : Mon père !

Abraham dit : Qu’y a-t-il, mon fils ?

– Voici le feu et le bois, dit-il, mais où est l’agneau pour l’holocauste ?

Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

Abraham répondit : Mon fils, Dieu pourvoira lui-même à l’agneau pour l’holocauste.

Et ils poursuivirent leur chemin tous deux ensemble.

When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

Quand ils furent arrivés à l’endroit que Dieu lui avait indiqué, Abraham construisit un autel et y disposa les bûches. Puis il ligota son fils Isaac et le mit sur l’autel par-dessus le bois.

Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

Alors Abraham prit en main le couteau pour immoler son fils.

But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

A ce moment-là, l’ange de l’Eternel lui cria du haut du ciel : Abraham ! Abraham !

– Me voici, répondit-il.

“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

L’ange reprit : Ne porte pas la main sur le garçon, ne lui fais pas de mal, car maintenant je sais que tu crains Dieu puisque tu ne m’as pas refusé ton fils unique.

Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram^[a] caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

Alors Abraham aperçut un bélier qui s’était pris les cornes dans un buisson^[c]. Il s’en saisit et l’offrit en holocauste à la place de son fils.

So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

Abraham appela ce lieu-là : Adonaï-Yireéh (le Seigneur pourvoira). C’est pourquoi on dit aujourd’hui : Sur la montagne du Seigneur, il sera pourvu.

The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time

Puis l’ange de l’Eternel appela une seconde fois Abraham du haut du ciel

and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

et lui dit : Je le jure par moi-même, parole de l’Eternel, puisque tu as fait cela, puisque tu ne m’as pas refusé ton fils, ton unique,

I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,

je te comblerai de bénédictions, je multiplierai ta descendance et je la rendrai aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel et que les grains de sable au bord de la mer. Ta descendance dominera sur ses ennemis^[d].

and through your offspring^[b] all nations on earth will be blessed,^[c] because you have obeyed me.”

Tous les peuples de la terre seront bénis à travers ta descendance parce que tu m’as obéi.

Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

Nahor’s Sons

Abraham revint vers ses serviteurs et ils se remirent ensemble en route pour rentrer à Beer-Sheva où Abraham continua d’habiter.

La descendance de Nahor

Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:

Après ces événements, on annonça à Abraham que Milka avait donné des enfants à Nahor, son frère :

Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram),

Outs son premier-né, Bouz le second, Qemouel, père d’Aram,

Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.”

Késéd, Hazo, Pildash, Yidlaph et Betouel.

Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.

Betouel fut le père de Rébecca. Ce sont là les huit fils que Milka avait donnés à Nahor, frère d’Abraham.

His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.

Son épouse de second rang Reouma lui donna aussi des enfants : Tébah, Gaham, Tahash et Maaka.
