Genesis 21

Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.

L’Eternel intervint en faveur de Sara comme il l’avait annoncé et il accomplit pour elle ce qu’il avait promis.

Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.

Elle devint enceinte et, au temps promis par Dieu, elle donna un fils à Abraham, bien que celui-ci fût très âgé.

Abraham gave the name Isaac^[a] to the son Sarah bore him.

Il appela ce fils qui lui était né de Sara : Isaac (Il a ri).

When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.

Il le circoncit à l’âge de huit jours, comme Dieu le lui avait ordonné^[a].

Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

Abraham avait cent ans au moment de la naissance d’Isaac.

Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”

Sara dit alors : Dieu m’a donné une occasion de rire, et tous ceux qui l’apprendront riront à mon sujet.

And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”

Hagar and Ishmael Sent Away

Elle ajouta : Qui aurait dit à Abraham qu’un jour Sara allaiterait des enfants ? Et cependant, je lui ai donné un fils dans sa vieillesse.

Le renvoi d’Agar et d’Ismaël

The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.

L’enfant grandit et Sara cessa de l’allaiter. Le jour où l’on sevra Isaac, Abraham fit un grand festin^[b].

But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking,

Sara vit rire le fils qu’Agar l’Egyptienne avait donné à Abraham^[c].

and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”

Alors elle dit à Abraham : Chasse cette esclave et son fils, car le fils de cette esclave ne partagera pas l’héritage avec mon fils Isaac^[d].

The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.

Cette parole affligea beaucoup Abraham, à cause de son fils.

But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring^[b] will be reckoned.

Mais Dieu lui dit : Ne t’afflige pas à cause du garçon et de ta servante. Accorde à Sara tout ce qu’elle te demandera. Car c’est par Isaac que te sera suscitée une descendance^[e].

I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.”

Néanmoins, je ferai aussi du fils de l’esclave l’ancêtre d’un peuple, car lui aussi est issu de toi.

Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.

Le lendemain, de bon matin, Abraham prépara du pain et une outre d’eau qu’il donna à Agar en les plaçant sur son épaule ; il lui donna aussi l’enfant et la congédia. Elle partit à l’aventure et s’égara dans le désert de Beer-Sheva.

When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes.

L’eau qui était dans l’outre s’épuisa, alors elle laissa l’enfant sous un buisson

Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there, she^[c] began to sob.

et alla s’asseoir à l’écart, à une centaine de mètres plus loin^[f], car elle se disait : Je ne veux pas voir mourir mon enfant.

Elle resta assise en face de lui, gémissant et pleurant.

God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.

Dieu entendit^[g] la voix du garçon et l’ange de Dieu appela Agar du haut du ciel et lui dit : Qu’as-tu, Agar ? N’aie pas peur, car Dieu a entendu le garçon là où il est.

Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”

Lève-toi, relève le garçon et prends-le par la main, car je ferai de lui un grand peuple.

Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

Dieu lui ouvrit les yeux, et elle aperçut un puits. Elle alla remplir d’eau son outre et donna à boire au garçon.

God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.

Dieu fut avec lui. Il grandit et vécut dans le désert où il devint un chasseur à l’arc.

While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.

The Treaty at Beersheba

Il s’établit dans le désert de Parân, et sa mère choisit pour lui une femme du pays d’Egypte.

Abraham fait alliance avec Abimélek

At that time Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.

A la même époque, Abimélek accompagné de Pikol, chef de son armée, vint trouver Abraham et lui dit : Dieu fait réussir tout ce que tu entreprends.

Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you.”

Maintenant donc, jure-moi ici par le nom de Dieu de ne trahir ni moi, ni mes enfants, ni ma descendance, mais d’agir envers moi et envers ce pays où tu séjournes avec la même bonté dont j’ai usé envers toi.

Abraham said, “I swear it.”

Abraham répondit : Oui, je le jure.

Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek’s servants had seized.

Il saisit l’occasion pour lui faire des doléances au sujet d’un puits dont les serviteurs d’Abimélek s’étaient emparés.

But Abimelek said, “I don’t know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today.”

Abimélek lui répondit : J’ignore qui a fait cela. Toi-même, tu ne m’en avais pas informé et je l’apprends aujourd’hui.

So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.

Abraham choisit des moutons, des chèvres et des bovins et en fit cadeau à Abimélek et tous deux conclurent ensemble une alliance.

Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock,

Puis Abraham mit à part sept jeunes brebis du troupeau.

and Abimelek asked Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?”

Abimélek lui demanda : Pourquoi as-tu mis ces sept brebis à part ?

He replied, “Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well.”

Il répondit : Accepte ces sept jeunes brebis de ma main : cela me servira d’attestation que c’est bien moi qui ai fait creuser ce puits.

So that place was called Beersheba,^[d] because the two men swore an oath there.

C’est pourquoi on a appelé ce lieu-là Beer-Sheva (le Puits du Serment), parce que c’est là que tous deux prêtèrent serment.

After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines.

Ainsi ils firent alliance à Beer-Sheva, puis Abimélek partit avec Pikol, le chef de son armée, et ils s’en retournèrent au pays des Philistins.

Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God.

Abraham planta un tamaris à Beer-Sheva et il invoqua l’Eternel, le Dieu d’éternité.

And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.

Il séjourna encore longtemps au pays des Philistins.
