Verse 1
Adam, Sheth, Enosh,

The descendants of Adam were Seth, Enosh,
Verse 2
Kenan, Mahalaleel, Jered,

Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared,
Verse 3
Henoch, Methuselah, Lamech,

Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech,
Verse 4
Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

and Noah.

The sons of Noah were[a] Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Descendants of Japheth

Verse 5
The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

The descendants of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.

Verse 6
And the sons of Gomer; Ashchenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.

The descendants of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath,[b] and Togarmah.

Verse 7
And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

The descendants of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Rodanim.

Descendants of Ham

Verse 8
The sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.

The descendants of Ham were Cush, Mizraim,[c] Put, and Canaan.

Verse 9
And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabta, and Raamah, and Sabtecha. And the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.

The descendants of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The descendants of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.
Verse 10
And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be mighty upon the earth.

Cush was also the ancestor of Nimrod, who was the first heroic warrior on earth.

Verse 11
And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,

Mizraim was the ancestor of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites,
Verse 12
And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (of whom came the Philistines,) and Caphthorim.

Pathrusites, Casluhites, and the Caphtorites, from whom the Philistines came.[d]

Verse 13
And Canaan begat Zidon his firstborn, and Heth,

Canaan’s oldest son was Sidon, the ancestor of the Sidonians. Canaan was also the ancestor of the Hittites,[e]
Verse 14
The Jebusite also, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite,

Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites,
Verse 15
And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,

Hivites, Arkites, Sinites,
Verse 16
And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite.

Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites.

Descendants of Shem

Verse 17
The sons of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram, and Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Meshech.

The descendants of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram.

The descendants of Aram were[f] Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.[g]

Verse 18
And Arphaxad begat Shelah, and Shelah begat Eber.

Arphaxad was the father of Shelah.

Shelah was the father of Eber.

Verse 19
And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided: and his brother's name was Joktan.

Eber had two sons. The first was named Peleg (which means “division”), for during his lifetime the people of the world were divided into different language groups. His brother’s name was Joktan.

Verse 20
And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,

Joktan was the ancestor of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
Verse 21
Hadoram also, and Uzal, and Diklah,

Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
Verse 22
And Ebal, and Abimael, and Sheba,

Obal,[h] Abimael, Sheba,
Verse 23
And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.

Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were descendants of Joktan.

Verse 24
Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah,

So this is the family line descended from Shem: Arphaxad, Shelah,[i]
Verse 25
Eber, Peleg, Reu,

Eber, Peleg, Reu,
Verse 26
Serug, Nahor, Terah,

Serug, Nahor, Terah,
Verse 27
Abram; the same is Abraham.

and Abram, later known as Abraham.

Descendants of Abraham

Verse 28
The sons of Abraham; Isaac, and Ishmael.

The sons of Abraham were Isaac and Ishmael.
Verse 29
These are their generations: The firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth; then Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,

These are their genealogical records:

The sons of Ishmael were Nebaioth (the oldest), Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

Verse 30
Mishma, and Dumah, Massa, Hadad, and Tema,

Verse 31
Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishmael.

Verse 32
Now the sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine: she bare Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan; Sheba, and Dedan.

The sons of Keturah, Abraham’s concubine, were Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

The sons of Jokshan were Sheba and Dedan.

Verse 33
And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Henoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these are the sons of Keturah.

The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah.

All these were descendants of Abraham through his concubine Keturah.

Descendants of Isaac

Verse 34
And Abraham begat Isaac. The sons of Isaac; Esau and Israel.

Abraham was the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac were Esau and Israel.[j]

Descendants of Esau

Verse 35
The sons of Esau; Eliphaz, Reuel, and Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.

The sons of Esau were Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.

Verse 36
The sons of Eliphaz; Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek.

The descendants of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho,[k] Gatam, Kenaz, and Amalek, who was born to Timna.[l]

Verse 37
The sons of Reuel; Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.

The descendants of Reuel were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.

Original Peoples of Edom

Verse 38
And the sons of Seir; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah, and Dishon, and Ezar, and Dishan.

The descendants of Seir were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan.

Verse 39
And the sons of Lotan; Hori, and Homam: and Timna was Lotan's sister.

The descendants of Lotan were Hori and Hemam.[m] Lotan’s sister was named Timna.

Verse 40
The sons of Shobal; Alian, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shephi, and Onam. and the sons of Zibeon; Aiah, and Anah.

The descendants of Shobal were Alvan,[n] Manahath, Ebal, Shepho,[o] and Onam.

The descendants of Zibeon were Aiah and Anah.

Verse 41
The sons of Anah; Dishon. And the sons of Dishon; Amram, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.

The son of Anah was Dishon.

The descendants of Dishon were Hemdan,[p] Eshban, Ithran, and Keran.

Verse 42
The sons of Ezer; Bilhan, and Zavan, and Jakan. The sons of Dishan; Uz, and Aran.

The descendants of Ezer were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.[q]

The descendants of Dishan[r] were Uz and Aran.

Rulers of Edom

Verse 43
Now these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel; Bela the son of Beor: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.

These are the kings who ruled in the land of Edom before any king ruled over the Israelites[s]:

Bela son of Beor, who ruled from his city of Dinhabah.

Verse 44
And when Bela was dead, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.

When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah became king in his place.

Verse 45
And when Jobab was dead, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead.

When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites became king in his place.

Verse 46
And when Husham was dead, Hadad the son of Bedad, which smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith.

When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad became king in his place and ruled from the city of Avith. He was the one who destroyed the Midianite army in the land of Moab.

Verse 47
And when Hadad was dead, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead.

When Hadad died, Samlah from the city of Masrekah became king in his place.

Verse 48
And when Samlah was dead, Shaul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead.

When Samlah died, Shaul from the city of Rehoboth-on-the-River became king in his place.

Verse 49
And when Shaul was dead, Baalhanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.

When Shaul died, Baal-hanan son of Acbor became king in his place.

Verse 50
And when Baalhanan was dead, Hadad reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pai; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.

When Baal-hanan died, Hadad became king in his place and ruled from the city of Pau.[t] His wife was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred and granddaughter of Me-zahab.
Verse 51
Hadad died also. And the dukes of Edom were; duke Timnah, duke Aliah, duke Jetheth,

Then Hadad died.

The clan leaders of Edom were Timna, Alvah,[u] Jetheth,

Verse 52
Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon,

Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,
Verse 53
Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar,

Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar,
Verse 54
Duke Magdiel, duke Iram. These are the dukes of Edom.

Magdiel, and Iram. These are the clan leaders of Edom.
