Genesis 43:7

And they said, “The man asked us straightforward questions about ourselves and our relatives. He said, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ And we [a]answered him accordingly. How could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down [here to Egypt]’?”

And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?

They said, “The man pressed us hard, asking pointed questions about our family: ‘Is your father alive? Do you have another brother?’ So we answered his questions. How did we know that he’d say, ‘Bring your brother here’?” 8-10 Judah pushed his father Israel. “Let the boy go; I’ll take charge of him. Let us go and be on our way—if we don’t get going, we’re all going to starve to death—we and you and our children, too! I’ll take full responsibility for his safety; it’s my life on the line for his. If I don’t bring him back safe and sound, I’m the guilty one; I’ll take all the blame. If we had gone ahead in the first place instead of procrastinating like this, we could have been there and back twice over.” 11-14 Their father Israel gave in. “If it has to be, it has to be. But do this: stuff your packs with the finest products from the land you can find and take them to the man as gifts—some balm and honey, some spices and perfumes, some pistachios and almonds. And take plenty of money—pay back double what was returned to your sacks; that might have been a mistake. Take your brother and get going. Go back to the man. And may The Strong God give you grace in that man’s eyes so that he’ll send back your other brother along with Benjamin. For me, nothing’s left; I’ve lost everything.” 15-16 The men took the gifts, double the money, and Benjamin. They lost no time in getting to Egypt and meeting Joseph. When Joseph saw that they had Benjamin with them, he told his house steward, “Take these men into the house and make them at home. Butcher an animal and prepare a meal; these men are going to eat with me at noon.” 17-18 The steward did what Joseph had said and took them inside. But they became anxious when they were brought into Joseph’s home, thinking, “It’s the money; he thinks we ran off with the money on our first trip down here. And now he’s got us where he wants us—he’s going to turn us into slaves and confiscate our donkeys.” 19-22 So they went up to Joseph’s house steward and talked to him in the doorway. They said, “Listen, master. We came down here one other time to buy food. On our way home, the first night out we opened our bags and found our money at the mouth of the bag—the exact amount we’d paid. We’ve brought it all back and have plenty more to buy more food with. We have no idea who put the money in our bags.”

But they said, “The man questioned particularly about us and our relatives, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ So we [c]answered his questions. Could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”

They replied, “The man questioned us closely about ourselves and our family. He asked us, ‘Is your father still living? Do you have another brother?’ We just answered his questions. How could we possibly know he would say, ‘Bring your brother down here’?”

“The man kept asking us questions about our family,” they replied. “He asked, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ So we answered his questions. How could we know he would say, ‘Bring your brother down here’?”

فَأَجَابُوا: «إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ قَدْ دَقَّقَ فِي اسْتِجْوَابِنَا عَنْ أَنْفُسِنَا وَعَنْ عَشِيرَتِنَا سَائِلاً: هَلْ أَبُوكُمْ حَيٌّ بَعْدُ؟ هَلْ لَكُمْ أَخٌ؟ فَأَجَبْنَاهُ حَسَبَ أَسْئِلَتِهِ. فَمِنْ أَيْنَ لَنَا أَنْ نَعْرِفَ أَنَّهُ سَيَقُولُ: أَحْضِرُوا أَخَاكُمْ إِلَى هُنَا؟»

„Manden forhørte os jo indgående om vores familie!” svarede de. „Han ville vide, om vores far stadig levede, og om vi havde flere brødre. Vi var da nødt til at svare ham! Hvordan kunne vi vide, at han ville sige: ‚Hent jeres bror herned?’ ”

Ils lui répondirent : Cet homme nous a questionnés en détail sur nous et sur notre parenté. Il nous a demandé : « Votre père vit-il encore ? Avez-vous un autre frère ? » Et nous avons répondu à ces questions. Pouvions-nous savoir qu’il nous ordonnerait de lui amener notre frère ?

Nagsabat sila, “Ano abi kay sagi gid niya kami pamangkot parte sa aton pamilya. Nagpamangkot siya kon buhi pa bala ang amon amay kag kon may utod pa bala kami nga iban. Siyempre ginsabat namon siya. Sin-o abi ang maghunahuna nga silingon niya kami nga dal-on namon didto sa iya ang amon utod?”

「あの人が家族のことをしつこく聞くので、しかたがなかったのです。お父さんが元気かどうか知りたがっていたし、ほかに弟はいないのかと尋ねるものだから、『いる』と答えたのです。『その弟を連れて来るように』などと言われようとは、夢にも思わなかったのです。」みな口々に弁解しました。

그들이 이렇게 대답하였다. “그 사람이 우리와 우리 가족에 대하여 자세히 묻고 ‘너희 아버지가 지금도 살아 있느냐? 너희에게 또 다른 동생이 있느냐?’ 하기에 우리는 그저 그의 질문에 대답했을 뿐입니다. 그가 우리 동생을 데려오라고 말할 줄을 우리가 어떻게 알았겠습니까?”

”Mannen frågade noga om vår familj”, svarade de. ”Han ville veta om vår far fortfarande levde, och han frågade om vi hade ytterligare någon bror, och därför berättade vi det för honom. Hur kunde vi veta att han skulle säga: ’För hit er bror?’ ”

他們回答說：「那人詳細詢問我們和我們家人的情況，問我們的父親是否在世，還有沒有弟兄。我們如實回答，怎會想到他非要我們把弟弟帶去呢？」
