Ezra 8:22

For I was ashamed to request troops and horsemen from the king to protect us from the enemy along the way, because we had told the king, “The hand of our God is favorable toward all those who seek Him, but His power and His anger are against all those who abandon (turn away from) Him.”

For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.

For I was ashamed to request from the king troops and horsemen to [i]protect us from the enemy on the way, because we had said to the king, “The hand of our God is [j]favorably disposed to all those who seek Him, but His power and His anger are against all those who forsake Him.”

I was ashamed to ask King Artaxerxes for soldiers and horsemen. They could have kept us safe from enemies on the road. But we had told the king that our God would keep us safe. We had said, “Our God is gracious and helps everyone who looks to him. But he becomes very angry with anyone who deserts him.”

道中の敵を恐れて、警護の兵や騎兵をつけるよう王に願い出たりするのは恥だと考えたからです。というのも、かねてから王には、私たちの神を礼拝する者はだれでも守られ、災難は神をないがしろにする者にだけ下ると申し上げていたからです。

Jag skämdes för att be kungen om soldater och ryttare som skydd mot fiender längs vägen. Vi hade ju berättat för kungen att vår Gud håller sin skyddande hand över alla som söker honom, men hans vrede riktar sig mot dem som överger honom.
