But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile (taint, dishonor) himself with the [f]king’s finest food or with the wine which the king drank; so he asked the commander of the officials that he might [be excused so that he would] not defile himself.

أَمَّا دَانِيَالُ فَقَدْ عَزَمَ فِي نَفْسِهِ أَنْ لَا يَتَنَجَّسَ بِأَطَايِبِ مَأْكُولاتِ الْمَلِكِ وَلا بِخَمْرِ شَرَابِهِ، وَطَلَبَ مِنْ رَئِيسِ الْخِصْيَانِ أَنْ يَعْفِيَهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ.

Daniel besluttede af religiøse grunde,[b] at han ikke ville spise den mad og drikke den vin, som blev serveret, så han bad hofmarskalen om, at de måtte få noget andet at spise.

しかしダニエルは、王の支給する食物（ユダヤの法律で食べることが禁止されていた豚肉などが含まれていたと思われる）もぶどう酒も断じて口にしないと決心し、ほかの食事をとることができるよう、監督官に許可を願い出ました。

다니엘은 왕의 음식과 포도주로 자신을 더럽히지 않겠다고 굳게 마음 먹고 궁중 대신에게 자기를 도와 달라고 간청하였다.

Daniel bestämde sig för att inte orena sig med kungens mat och vin. Han bad chefen för hovtjänstemännen om lov att få slippa orena sig.
