1 Samuel 22:17

And the king said to the guards who stood around him, “Turn around and kill the priests of the Lord, because their [d]loyalty also is with David, and because they knew that he was fleeing and did not inform me.” But the servants of the king were not willing to put out their hands to attack the Lord’s priests.

They refused to lay a hand on the priests of God. 18-19 Then the king told Doeg, “You do it—massacre the priests!” Doeg the Edomite led the attack and slaughtered the priests, the eighty-five men who wore the sacred robes. He then carried the massacre into Nob, the city of priests, killing man and woman, child and baby, ox, donkey, and sheep—the works. 20-21 Only one son of Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped: Abiathar. He got away and joined up with David. Abiathar reported to David that Saul had murdered the priests of God. 22-23 David said to Abiathar, “I knew it—that day I saw Doeg the Edomite there, I knew he’d tell Saul. I’m to blame for the death of everyone in your father’s family. Stay here with me. Don’t be afraid. The one out to kill you is out to kill me, too. Stick with me. I’ll protect you.”

And the king said to the [i]guards who were attending him, “Turn around and put the priests of the Lord to death, because their hand also is with David and because they knew that he was fleeing and did not [j]reveal it to me.” But the servants of the king were not willing to put forth their hands to [k]attack the priests of the Lord.

Then the king gave an order to the guards at his side. He said, “Go and kill the priests of the Lord. They are on David’s side too. They knew he was running away from me. And they didn’t even tell me.”But the king’s officials wouldn’t raise a hand to strike down the priests of the Lord.

وَأَمَرَ الْمَلِكُ حُرَّاسَهُ الْمَاثِلِينَ لَدَيْهِ: «هَيَّا أَحِيطُوا بِكَهَنَةِ الرَّبِّ وَاقْتُلُوهُمْ، لأَنَّهُمْ أَيْضاً قَدْ تَحَالَفُوا مَعَ دَاوُدَ، وَلأَنَّهُمْ عَرَفُوا أَنَّهُ كَانَ هَارِباً فَلَمْ يُخْبِرُونِي». فَلَمْ يَرْضَ حُرَّاسُ الْمَلِكِ أَنْ يَقْتُلُوا كَهَنَةَ الرَّبِّ.
