The sons of Eli [Hophni and Phinehas] were [d]worthless (dishonorable, unprincipled) men; they did not know [nor respect] the Lord

Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the Lord.

أَمَّا ابْنَا عَالِي فَكَانَا مُتَوَرِّطَيْنِ فِي الشَّرِّ لَا يَعْرِفَانِ الرَّبَّ

De zonen van Eli waren slechte mannen die niets om de Here gaven, 13,14 en ze maakten misbruik van hun priesterrechten. Zo gebeurde het regelmatig dat zij hun dienaar eropuit stuurden wanneer iemand een offer bracht. Terwijl het vlees van het offerdier werd gekookt, stak de dienaar een driepuntige vleeshaak in de pot waarbij alles wat aan de haak omhoog kwam voor de zonen van Eli was. Alle Israëlieten die naar Silo kwamen om te aanbidden, werden op die manier behandeld.
