1 Chronicles 5:1

Now [we come to] the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel—for Reuben was the eldest, but because he defiled his father’s bed [with Bilhah his father’s [a]concubine], his birthright was given to [Manasseh and Ephraim] the sons of Joseph [the favorite] son of Israel, so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy according to the birthright.

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.

1-2 The family of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Though Reuben was Israel’s firstborn, after he slept with his father’s concubine, a defiling act, his rights as the firstborn were passed on to the sons of Joseph son of Israel. He lost his “firstborn” place in the family tree. And even though Judah became the strongest of his brothers and King David eventually came from that family, the firstborn rights stayed with Joseph.

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy according to the birthright.

Reuben was the oldest son of Israel. But he slept with his father’s concubine. By doing that, he made his father’s bed “unclean.” That’s why his rights as the oldest son were given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel. So Reuben isn’t listed in the family history as the one who had the rights of the oldest son.

The oldest son of Israel[a] was Reuben. But since he dishonored his father by sleeping with one of his father’s concubines, his birthright was given to the sons of his brother Joseph. For this reason, Reuben is not listed in the genealogical records as the firstborn son.

وَكَانَ رَأُوبَيْنُ بِكْرَ إِسْرَائِيلَ. وَلَكِنَّهُ فَقَدَ امْتِيَازَاتِ بَكُورِيَّتِهِ الَّتِي وُهِبَتْ لاِبْنَيْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ إِسْرَائِيلَ، لأَنَّهُ عَاشَرَ مَحْظِيَّةَ أَبِيهِ، فَلَمْ يُحْسَبْ بِكْراً.

Ruben var Jakobs ældste søn. (Men fordi han vanærede sin far ved at stå i forhold til en af faderens koner, blev hans førstefødselsret overdraget til hans halvbror Josef og dennes to sønner. Det er derfor Rubens slægt ikke bliver nævnt først i slægtsbøgerne.

De oudste zoon van Israël was Ruben, maar omdat hij zijn vader schande aandeed door met een van diens vrouwen te slapen, werd zijn eerstgeboorterecht aan het nageslacht van zijn halfbroer Jozef gegeven. Toch vermeldt het officiële geslachtsregister Jozef niet als oudste zoon.

Israels förstfödde var Ruben. (Han var den förstfödde, men eftersom han vanhelgade sin fars bädd, gavs hans förstfödslorätt i stället till Josefs, Israels sons, söner. I släktregistret nämns han därför inte som den förstfödde.
