1 Kings 19

Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

Quando Acabe contou à rainha Jezabel o que Elias fizera, que tinha matado todos os profetas de Baal,

So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”

ela mandou um recado a Elias: “Mataste os meus profetas, mas juro-te pelos deuses que amanhã, por esta altura, te matarei eu.”

Elijah was afraid^[a] and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,

Elias resolveu fugir para escapar com vida. Foi a Berseba, cidade de Judá e deixou ali o seu criado.

while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”

Depois continuou sozinho pelo deserto, andando o dia inteiro. A certa altura, sentou-se debaixo dum zimbro e orou, pedindo que a morte o levasse: “Já basta, Senhor! Toma agora a minha vida. Tenho de morrer um dia, como todos os que me precederam e que morreram por te servir. Então que seja agora.”

Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”

Deitou-se e adormeceu ali, debaixo do zimbro. Enquanto dormia, um anjo chegou-se, tocou-lhe e disse-lhe que se levantasse e comesse.

He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

Olhou em volta e viu pão, que fora cozido sobre brasas, e um jarro de água. Comeu, bebeu e tornou a deitar-se.

The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”

O anjo do Senhor veio de novo, tocou-lhe e disse-lhe: “Levanta-te, come mais alguma coisa, porque tens uma longa caminhada pela frente.”

So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

Levantou-se então, comeu, bebeu, e aquele alimento deu-lhe forças bastantes para uma longa marcha de quarenta dias e quarenta noites, até ao monte Horebe, a montanha de Deus.

There he went into a cave and spent the night.

The Lord Appears to Elijah

And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Ali passou a noite numa gruta.

O Senhor aparece a Elias

Contudo, o Senhor disse-lhe: “Que fazes aqui, Elias?”

He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

Elias respondeu: “Tenho sido muito zeloso pelo Senhor, Deus dos exércitos, mas o povo de Israel quebrou a aliança que fizeste com ele, derrubou os teus altares e matou os teus profetas; só eu fiquei e ainda procuram matar-me.”

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

“Sai daí; põe-te perante mim, nesta montanha.”

Elias assim fez e o Senhor passou por ele, ao mesmo tempo que soprava um fortíssimo vento sobre a montanha; era de tal intensidade que até as rochas se quebravam. Mas o Senhor não estava nesse vento. Depois houve um tremor de terra; mas também aí não estava o Senhor.

After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

Posteriormente apareceu um fogo; mas também no fogo o Senhor não estava. Por fim, ouviu-se o ruído de um som delicado, como um sopro.

When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Ao ouvi-lo, Elias escondeu o rosto na capa, saiu da gruta e pôs-se à entrada.

Disse-lhe assim uma voz: “Que estás aqui a fazer, Elias?”

He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

Respondeu de novo o profeta: “Tenho sido muito zeloso pelo Senhor Deus dos exércitos, mas o povo de Israel quebrou a aliança que fizeste com ele, derrubou os teus altares e matou os teus profetas; só eu fiquei e ainda procuram matar-me.”

The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.

“Volta pelo caminho do deserto para Damasco; quando lá chegares unge Hazael como rei de Aram.

Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.

Depois unge também Jeú, o filho de Ninsi, como rei de Israel, e unge ainda Eliseu, o filho de Safate de Abel-Meolá, para te substituir como profeta.

Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.

Quem escapar de Hazael será morto por Jeú; os que escaparem de Jeú, serão mortos por Eliseu.

Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”

The Call of Elisha

Acontece que ainda há 7000 pessoas em Israel que nunca se inclinaram perante Baal, nem o beijaram!”

A chamada de Eliseu

So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.

Elias partiu e encontrou Eliseu, lavrando um campo com doze juntas de bois; ele encontrava-se com a última junta. Elias foi ter com ele, lançou-lhe a capa sobre os ombros e continuou o seu caminho.

Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.”

“Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”

Eliseu deixou ali os bois e correu atrás de Elias dizendo: “Deixa-me ir primeiro dizer adeus aos meus pais e depois logo vou contigo!”

Elias respondeu-lhe: “Vai e volta depois! Bem viste o que eu te fiz!”

So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.

Eliseu voltou para os seus bois, matou-os e usou a madeira do arado para fazer fogo para assar a carne. Deu assim de comer a todo o povo. Depois seguiu Elias como seu assistente.
