1 Kings 17

Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe^[a] in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.”

Elijah Fed by Ravens

Elias, o tesbita, que morava em Gileade, disse ao rei Acabe: “Tão certo como vive o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, o Deus a quem adoro e sirvo, te garanto que não haverá nem chuva nem orvalho durante vários anos, até eu dizer basta!”

Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah:

O Senhor disse a Elias:

“Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan.

“Vai para o oriente e esconde-te junto do ribeiro de Querite, num lugar a leste do rio Jordão.

You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.”

Bebe da água do ribeiro e come o que os corvos te trouxerem, porque mandei que eles te alimentassem.”

So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there.

Elias fez como o Senhor lhe ordenara e foi viver para junto do ribeiro.

The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

Elijah and the Widow at Zarephath

Os corvos traziam-lhe pão e carne de manhã e à tarde e bebia a água do rio.

Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.

Passado algum tempo o ribeiro secou, porque deixou de cair chuva sobre a terra.

A viúva de Zarefate

Then the word of the Lord came to him:

Então o Senhor disse-lhe:

“Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.”

“Vai viver para a aldeia de Zarefate, perto da cidade de Sídon. Há lá uma viúva que te alimentará. Já lhe dei as minhas instruções.”

So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?”

Então foi para Zarefate e quando ia a entrar na cidade viu uma mulher viúva a apanhar lenha e pediu-lhe de beber.

As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.”

Quando ela ia buscar a água, ele pediu-lhe mais: “Traz-me também um pedaço de pão.”

“As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”

Mas ela disse: “Tão certo como vive o Senhor, teu Deus, que não tenho um só pedaço de pão em casa. Tenho apenas uma mão-cheia de farinha e uma pequena porção de azeite no fundo duma botija. Estava justamente a juntar alguns pedaços de lenha para cozinhar a minha última refeição e depois deixar-me morrer de fome com o meu filho.”

Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.

“Não tenhas medo! Vai e cozinha aquilo que consideras a tua última refeição, mas faz primeiro para mim um pequeno pão; depois verás que haverá alimento suficiente para ti e para o teu filho.

For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”

Porque o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, diz que haverá sempre farinha na panela e azeite na botija até que o Senhor mande a chuva e as searas tornem a crescer!”

She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family.

Ela fez como Elias disse e tanto ela e o filho como o profeta continuaram a poder comer, tanto quanto lhes foi necessário.

For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.

A farinha não se acabou na panela nem o azeite na botija, tal como o Senhor prometera a Elias.

Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing.

Um dia, o filho da mulher adoeceu de tal maneira que morreu.

She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?”

“Ó homem de Deus”, clamou ela, “que foi que me fizeste? Vieste aqui para me castigar pelos meus pecados e matar-me o meu filho?”

“Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed.

“Dá-me o teu menino”, respondeu-lhe Elias. Pegou no corpo do rapaz, levou-o para cima, para o quarto onde vivia e deitou-o na sua cama.

Then he cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?”

E clamou ao Senhor: “Ó Senhor, meu Deus, porque é que mataste o filho desta viúva em casa de quem estou alojado?”

Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!”

E estendeu-se três vezes sobre o corpo do menino, rogando ao Senhor: “Ó Senhor, meu Deus, imploro-te que o espírito deste menino volte para ele!”

The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived.

O Senhor ouviu a oração de Elias e o espírito do rapaz voltou e este tornou a viver.

Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, “Look, your son is alive!”

Elias pegou nele, desceu e entregou-o à mãe. “Olha! Aqui está ele, vivo!”

Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”

“Agora tenho a certeza de que és um homem de Deus”, retorquiu a mulher, “e que tudo o que dizes em nome do Senhor é verdadeiro!”
