Nehemiah 8

Entonces todo el pueblo, como un solo hombre, se reunió en la plaza que está frente a la puerta del Agua y le pidió al maestro Esdras traer el libro de la ley que el Señor le había dado a Israel por medio de Moisés.

So on the first day of the seventh month Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, which was made up of men and women and all who were able to understand.

Así que el día primero del mes séptimo, el sacerdote Esdras llevó la ley ante la asamblea, que estaba compuesta de hombres y mujeres y de todos los que podían comprender la lectura,

He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law.

y la leyó en presencia de ellos desde el alba hasta el mediodía en la plaza que está frente a la puerta del Agua. Todo el pueblo estaba muy atento a la lectura del libro de la ley.

Ezra the teacher of the Law stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. Beside him on his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah; and on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.

El maestro Esdras se puso de pie sobre una plataforma de madera construida para la ocasión. A su derecha estaban Matatías, Semá, Anías, Urías, Jilquías y Maseías; a su izquierda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Jasún, Jasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulán.

Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up.

Esdras, a quien la gente podía ver porque él estaba en un lugar más alto, abrió el libro y todo el pueblo se puso de pie.

Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

Entonces Esdras bendijo al Señor, el gran Dios. Y todo el pueblo, levantando las manos, respondió: «¡Amén y amén!» Luego adoraron al Señor, inclinándose hasta tocar el suelo con la frente.

The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah—instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there.

Los levitas Jesúa, Baní, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabetay, Hodías, Maseías, Quelitá, Azarías, Jozabed, Janán y Pelaías le explicaban la ley al pueblo, que no se movía de su sitio.

They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear^[a] and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read.

Ellos leían con claridad el libro de la ley de Dios y lo interpretaban de modo que se comprendiera su lectura.

Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and teacher of the Law, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.

Al oír las palabras de la ley, la gente comenzó a llorar. Por eso el gobernador Nehemías, el sacerdote y maestro Esdras y los levitas que enseñaban al pueblo les dijeron: «No lloren ni se pongan tristes, porque este día ha sido consagrado al Señor su Dios».

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Luego Nehemías añadió: «Ya pueden irse. Coman bien, tomen bebidas dulces y compartan su comida con quienes no tengan nada, porque este día ha sido consagrado a nuestro Señor. No estén tristes, pues el gozo del Señor es nuestra fortaleza».

The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.”

También los levitas tranquilizaban a todo el pueblo. Les decían: «¡Tranquilos! ¡No estén tristes, que este es un día santo!»

Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.

Así que todo el pueblo se fue a comer y beber y compartir su comida, felices de haber comprendido lo que se les había enseñado.

La fiesta de las Enramadas

On the second day of the month, the heads of all the families, along with the priests and the Levites, gathered around Ezra the teacher to give attention to the words of the Law.

Al día siguiente, los jefes de familia, junto con los sacerdotes y los levitas, se reunieron con el maestro Esdras para estudiar los términos de la ley.

They found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, that the Israelites were to live in temporary shelters during the festival of the seventh month

Y en esta encontraron escrito que el Señor le había mandado a Moisés que durante la fiesta del mes séptimo los israelitas debían habitar en enramadas

and that they should proclaim this word and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the hill country and bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, and from myrtles, palms and shade trees, to make temporary shelters”—as it is written.^[b]

y pregonar en todas sus ciudades y en Jerusalén esta orden: «Vayan a la montaña y traigan ramas de olivo, de olivo silvestre, de arrayán, de palmera y de todo árbol frondoso, para hacer enramadas, conforme a lo que está escrito».

So the people went out and brought back branches and built themselves temporary shelters on their own roofs, in their courtyards, in the courts of the house of God and in the square by the Water Gate and the one by the Gate of Ephraim.

De modo que la gente fue y trajo ramas, y con ellas hizo enramadas en las azoteas, en los patios, en el atrio del templo de Dios, en la plaza de la puerta del Agua y en la plaza de la puerta de Efraín.

The whole company that had returned from exile built temporary shelters and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated it like this. And their joy was very great.

Toda la asamblea de los que habían regresado del cautiverio hicieron enramadas y habitaron en ellas. Como los israelitas no habían hecho esto desde los días de Josué hijo de Nun, hicieron una gran fiesta.

Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation, there was an assembly.

Todos los días, desde el primero hasta el último, se leyó el libro de la ley de Dios. Celebraron la fiesta durante siete días, y en el día octavo hubo una asamblea solemne, según lo ordenado.
