2 Kings 6

The company of the prophets said to Elisha, “Look, the place where we meet with you is too small for us.

Un día, los miembros de la comunidad de los profetas le dijeron a Eliseo:

—Como puede ver, el lugar donde ahora vivimos con usted nos resulta pequeño.

Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a pole; and let us build a place there for us to meet.”

And he said, “Go.”

Es mejor que vayamos al Jordán. Allí podremos conseguir madera y construir^[a] un albergue.

—Bien, vayan —respondió Eliseo.

Then one of them said, “Won’t you please come with your servants?”

“I will,” Elisha replied.

Pero uno de ellos le pidió:

—Acompañe usted, por favor, a sus servidores.

Eliseo consintió

And he went with them.

They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees.

en acompañarlos, y cuando llegaron al Jordán empezaron a cortar árboles.

As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh no, my lord!” he cried out. “It was borrowed!”

De pronto, al cortar un tronco, a uno de los profetas se le zafó el hacha y se le cayó al río.

—¡Ay, maestro! —gritó—. ¡Esa hacha no era mía!

The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float.

—¿Dónde cayó? —preguntó el hombre de Dios.

Cuando se le indicó el lugar, Eliseo cortó un palo y, echándolo allí, hizo que el hacha saliera a flote.

“Lift it out,” he said. Then the man reached out his hand and took it.

Elisha Traps Blinded Arameans

—Sácala —ordenó Eliseo.

Así que el hombre extendió el brazo y la sacó.

Eliseo captura una tropa siria

Now the king of Aram was at war with Israel. After conferring with his officers, he said, “I will set up my camp in such and such a place.”

El rey de Siria, que estaba en guerra con Israel, deliberó con sus ministros y les dijo: «Vamos a acampar en tal lugar».

The man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Beware of passing that place, because the Arameans are going down there.”

Pero el hombre de Dios le envió este mensaje al rey de Israel: «Procura no pasar por este sitio, pues los sirios te han tendido allí una emboscada».^[b]

So the king of Israel checked on the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places.

Así que el rey de Israel envió a reconocer el lugar que el hombre de Dios le había indicado. Y en varias otras ocasiones Eliseo le avisó al rey, de modo que este tomó precauciones.

This enraged the king of Aram. He summoned his officers and demanded of them, “Tell me! Which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”

El rey de Siria, enfurecido por lo que estaba pasando, llamó a sus ministros y les reclamó:

—¿Quieren decirme quién está informando al rey de Israel?

“None of us, my lord the king,” said one of his officers, “but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.”

—Nadie, mi señor y rey —respondió uno de ellos—. El responsable es Eliseo, el profeta que está en Israel. Es él quien le comunica todo al rey de Israel, aun lo que Su Majestad dice en su alcoba.

“Go, find out where he is,” the king ordered, “so I can send men and capture him.” The report came back: “He is in Dothan.”

—Pues entonces averigüen dónde está —ordenó el rey—, para que mande a capturarlo.

Then he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city.

el rey envió allá un destacamento grande, con caballos y carros de combate. Llegaron de noche y cercaron la ciudad.

When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.

Por la mañana, cuando el criado del hombre de Dios se levantó para salir, vio que un ejército con caballos y carros de combate rodeaba la ciudad.

—¡Ay, mi señor! —exclamó el criado—. ¿Qué vamos a hacer?

“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

—No tengas miedo —respondió Eliseo—. Los que están con nosotros son más que ellos.

And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

Entonces Eliseo oró: «Señor, ábrele a Guiezi los ojos para que vea». El Señor así lo hizo, y el criado vio que la colina estaba llena de caballos y de carros de fuego alrededor de Eliseo.

As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, “Strike this army with blindness.” So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.

Como ya los sirios se acercaban a él, Eliseo volvió a orar: «Señor, castiga a esta gente con ceguera». Y él hizo lo que le pidió Eliseo.

Elisha told them, “This is not the road and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you are looking for.” And he led them to Samaria.

Luego Eliseo les dijo: «Esta no es la ciudad adonde iban; han tomado un camino equivocado. Síganme, que yo los llevaré adonde está el hombre que buscan». Pero los llevó a Samaria.

After they entered the city, Elisha said, “Lord, open the eyes of these men so they can see.” Then the Lord opened their eyes and they looked, and there they were, inside Samaria.

Después de entrar en la ciudad, Eliseo dijo: «Señor, ábreles los ojos, para que vean». El Señor así lo hizo, y ellos se dieron cuenta de que estaban dentro de Samaria.

When the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, “Shall I kill them, my father? Shall I kill them?”

Cuando el rey de Israel los vio, le preguntó a Eliseo:

—¿Los mato, mi señor? ¿Los mato?

“Do not kill them,” he answered. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them so that they may eat and drink and then go back to their master.”

—No, no los mates —contestó Eliseo—. ¿Acaso los has capturado con tu espada y tu arco, para que los mates? Mejor sírveles comida y agua para que coman y beban, y que luego vuelvan a su rey.

So he prepared a great feast for them, and after they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. So the bands from Aram stopped raiding Israel’s territory.

Famine in Besieged Samaria

Así que el rey de Israel les dio un tremendo banquete. Cuando terminaron de comer, los despidió, y ellos regresaron a su rey. Y las bandas de sirios no volvieron a invadir el territorio israelita.

Hambre en Samaria

Some time later, Ben-Hadad king of Aram mobilized his entire army and marched up and laid siege to Samaria.

Algún tiempo después, Ben Adad, rey de Siria, movilizó todo su ejército para ir a Samaria y sitiarla.

There was a great famine in the city; the siege lasted so long that a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels^[a] of silver, and a quarter of a cab^[b] of seed pods^[c] for five shekels.^[d]

El sitio duró tanto tiempo que provocó un hambre terrible en la ciudad, a tal grado que una cabeza de asno llegó a costar ochenta monedas de plata,^[c] y un poco de algarroba,^[d] cinco.

As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, “Help me, my lord the king!”

Un día, mientras el rey recorría la muralla, una mujer le gritó:

—¡Sálvenos, Su Majestad!

The king replied, “If the Lord does not help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?”

—Si el Señor no te salva —respondió el rey—, ¿de dónde voy a sacar yo comida para salvarte? ¿Del granero? ¿Del lagar?

Then he asked her, “What’s the matter?”

She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him today, and tomorrow we’ll eat my son.’

¿Qué te pasa?

Ella se quejó:

—Esta mujer me propuso que le entregara mi hijo para que nos lo comiéramos hoy, y que mañana nos comeríamos el de ella.

So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him,’ but she had hidden him.”

Pues bien, cocinamos a mi hijo y nos lo comimos, pero, al día siguiente, cuando le pedí que entregara su hijo para que nos lo comiéramos, resulta que ya lo había escondido.

When the king heard the woman’s words, he tore his robes. As he went along the wall, the people looked, and they saw that, under his robes, he had sackcloth on his body.

Al oír la queja de la mujer, el rey se rasgó las vestiduras. Luego reanudó su recorrido por la muralla, y la gente pudo ver que bajo su túnica real iba vestido de luto.

He said, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today!”

«¡Que Dios me castigue sin piedad —exclamó el rey— si hoy mismo no le corto la cabeza a Eliseo hijo de Safat!»

Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger ahead, but before he arrived, Elisha said to the elders, “Don’t you see how this murderer is sending someone to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and hold it shut against him. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”

Mientras Eliseo se encontraba en su casa, sentado con los ancianos, el rey le envió un mensajero. Antes de que este llegara, Eliseo les dijo a los ancianos:

—Ahora van a ver cómo ese asesino envía a alguien a cortarme la cabeza. Pues bien, cuando llegue el mensajero, atranquen la puerta para que no entre. ¡Ya oigo detrás de él los pasos de su señor!

While he was still talking to them, the messenger came down to him.

The king said, “This disaster is from the Lord. Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?”

No había terminado de hablar cuando el mensajero llegó y dijo:

—Esta desgracia viene del Señor; ¿qué más se puede esperar de él?
