1 Kings 19

Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

Acab le contó a Jezabel todo lo que Elías había hecho, y cómo había matado a todos los profetas a filo de espada.

So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”

Entonces Jezabel envió un mensajero a Elías para decirle: «¡Que los dioses me castiguen sin piedad si mañana a esta hora no te he quitado la vida como tú se la quitaste a ellos!»

Elijah was afraid^[a] and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,

Elías se asustó^[a] y huyó para ponerse a salvo. Cuando llegó a Berseba de Judá, dejó allí a su criado

while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”

y caminó todo un día por el desierto. Llegó adonde había un arbusto,^[b] y se sentó a su sombra con ganas de morirse. «¡Estoy harto, Señor! —protestó—. Quítame la vida, pues no soy mejor que mis antepasados».

Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”

Luego se acostó debajo del arbusto y se quedó dormido.

De repente, un ángel lo tocó y le dijo: «Levántate y come».

He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

Elías miró a su alrededor y vio a su cabecera un panecillo cocido sobre carbones calientes y un jarro de agua. Comió y bebió, y volvió a acostarse.

The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.”

El ángel del Señor regresó y, tocándolo, le dijo: «Levántate y come, porque te espera un largo viaje».

So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

Elías se levantó, y comió y bebió. Una vez fortalecido por aquella comida, viajó cuarenta días y cuarenta noches hasta que llegó a Horeb, el monte de Dios.

There he went into a cave and spent the night.

The Lord Appears to Elijah

And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Allí pasó la noche en una cueva.

El Señor se le aparece a Elías

Más tarde, la palabra del Señor vino a él.

—¿Qué haces aquí, Elías? —le preguntó.

He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

—Me consume mi amor^[c] por ti, Señor Dios Todopoderoso —respondió él—. Los israelitas han rechazado tu pacto, han derribado tus altares, y a tus profetas los han matado a filo de espada. Yo soy el único que ha quedado con vida, ¡y ahora quieren matarme a mí también!

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

El Señor le ordenó:

—Sal y preséntate ante mí en la montaña, porque estoy a punto de pasar por allí.

Como heraldo del Señor vino un viento recio, tan violento que partió las montañas e hizo añicos las rocas; pero el Señor no estaba en el viento. Después del viento hubo un terremoto, pero el Señor tampoco estaba en el terremoto.

After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

Tras el terremoto vino un fuego, pero el Señor tampoco estaba en el fuego. Y después del fuego vino un suave murmullo.

When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Cuando Elías lo oyó, se cubrió el rostro con el manto y, saliendo, se puso a la entrada de la cueva.

Entonces oyó una voz que le dijo:

—¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?

He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

Él respondió:

—Me consume mi amor por ti, Señor Dios Todopoderoso. Los israelitas han rechazado tu pacto, han derribado tus altares, y a tus profetas los han matado a filo de espada. Yo soy el único que ha quedado con vida, ¡y ahora quieren matarme a mí también!

The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.

El Señor le dijo:

—Regresa por el mismo camino y ve al desierto de Damasco. Cuando llegues allá, unge a Jazael como rey de Siria,

Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.

y a Jehú hijo de Nimsi como rey de Israel; unge también a Eliseo hijo de Safat, de Abel Mejolá, para que te suceda como profeta.

Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.

Jehú dará muerte a cualquiera que escape de la espada de Jazael, y Eliseo dará muerte a cualquiera que escape de la espada de Jehú.

Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”

The Call of Elisha

Sin embargo, yo preservaré a siete mil israelitas que no se han arrodillado ante Baal ni lo han besado.

El llamamiento de Eliseo

So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.

Elías salió de allí y encontró a Eliseo hijo de Safat, que estaba arando. Había doce yuntas de bueyes en fila, y él mismo conducía la última. Elías pasó junto a Eliseo y arrojó su manto sobre él.

Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.”

“Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”

Entonces Eliseo dejó sus bueyes y corrió tras Elías.

—Permítame usted despedirme de mi padre y de mi madre con un beso —dijo él—, y luego lo seguiré.

—Anda, ve —respondió Elías—. Yo no te lo voy a impedir.^[d]

So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.

Eliseo lo dejó y regresó. Tomó su yunta de bueyes y los sacrificó. Quemando la madera de la yunta, asó la carne y se la dio al pueblo, y ellos comieron. Luego partió para seguir a Elías y se puso a su servicio.
