    or tie down its tongue with a rope?

Will it keep begging you for mercy?
    Will it speak to you with gentle words?

Você imagina que ele vai
    lhe implorar misericórdia
e falar-lhe palavras amáveis?

Will it make an agreement with you
    for you to take it as your slave for life?

Acha que ele vai fazer
    acordo com você,
para que o tenha como escravo
    pelo resto da vida?

Can you make a pet of it like a bird
    or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?

Acaso você consegue fazer dele
    um bichinho de estimação,
como se fosse um passarinho,
ou pôr-lhe uma coleira
    para dá-lo às suas filhas?

Will traders barter for it?
    Will they divide it up among the merchants?

Poderão os negociantes vendê-lo?
Ou reparti-lo
    entre os comerciantes?

Can you fill its hide with harpoons
    or its head with fishing spears?

Você consegue encher de arpões
    o seu couro,
e de lanças de pesca a sua cabeça?

If you lay a hand on it,
    you will remember the struggle and never do it again!

Se puser a mão nele,
    a luta ficará em sua memória,
e nunca mais você tornará a fazê-lo.

Any hope of subduing it is false;
    the mere sight of it is overpowering.

Esperar vencê-lo é ilusão;
apenas vê-lo já é assustador.

No one is fierce enough to rouse it.
    Who then is able to stand against me?

Ninguém é suficientemente corajoso
    para despertá-lo.
Quem então será capaz
    de resistir a mim?

Who has a claim against me that I must pay?
    Everything under heaven belongs to me.

Quem primeiro me deu alguma coisa,
    que eu lhe deva pagar?

    its strength and its graceful form.

    tightly sealed together;

each is so close to the next
    that no air can pass between.

They are joined fast to one another;
    they cling together and cannot be parted.

Its snorting throws out flashes of light;
    its eyes are like the rays of dawn.

Seu forte sopro
    atira lampejos de luz;
seus olhos são como
    os raios da alvorada.

Flames stream from its mouth;
    sparks of fire shoot out.

Tições saem da sua boca;
fagulhas de fogo estalam.

Smoke pours from its nostrils
    as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.

Das suas narinas sai fumaça
    como de panela fervente
    sobre fogueira de juncos.

Its breath sets coals ablaze,
    and flames dart from its mouth.

Seu sopro acende o carvão,
e da sua boca saltam chamas.

Strength resides in its neck;
    dismay goes before it.

Tanta força reside em seu pescoço
    que o terror vai adiante dele.

The folds of its flesh are tightly joined;
    they are firm and immovable.

As dobras da sua carne
    são fortemente unidas;
são tão firmes que não se movem.

Its chest is hard as rock,
    hard as a lower millstone.

Seu peito é duro como pedra,
rijo como a pedra inferior do moinho.

When it rises up, the mighty are terrified;
    they retreat before its thrashing.

Quando ele se ergue,
    os poderosos se apavoram;
fogem com medo dos seus golpes.

The sword that reaches it has no effect,
    nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.

A espada que o atinge
    nada lhe faz,
nem a lança nem a flecha
    nem o dardo.

Iron it treats like straw
    and bronze like rotten wood.

Ferro ele trata como palha,
e bronze como madeira podre.

Arrows do not make it flee;
    slingstones are like chaff to it.

As flechas não o afugentam,
as pedras das fundas
    são como cisco para ele.

A club seems to it but a piece of straw;
    it laughs at the rattling of the lance.

O bastão lhe parece fiapo de palha;
o brandir da grande lança o faz rir.

Its undersides are jagged potsherds,
    leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.

Seu ventre é como caco denteado,
e deixa rastro na lama
    como o trilho de debulhar.

It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron
    and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.

Ele faz as profundezas se agitarem
    como caldeirão fervente,
e revolve o mar
    como pote de ungüento.

It leaves a glistening wake behind it;
    one would think the deep had white hair.

Deixa atrás de si
    um rastro cintilante,
como se fossem
    os cabelos brancos do abismo.

Nothing on earth is its equal—
    a creature without fear.

Nada na terra se equipara a ele:
criatura destemida!

It looks down on all that are haughty;
    it is king over all that are proud.”
