Verse 1

Remember your Creator
    in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come
    and the years approach when you will say,
    “I find no pleasure in them”—

Lembre-se do seu Criador
    nos dias da sua juventude,
antes que venham os dias difíceis
e se aproximem os anos
    em que você dirá:
    “Não tenho satisfação neles”;

Verse 2

before the sun and the light
and the moon and the stars grow dark,
and the clouds return after the rain;

antes que se escureçam o sol e a luz,
a lua e as estrelas,
e as nuvens voltem depois da chuva;

Verse 3

when the keepers of the house tremble,
and the strong men stoop,
when the grinders cease because they are few,
and those looking through the windows grow dim;

quando os guardas da casa tremerem
    e os homens fortes
    caminharem encurvados;
quando pararem os moedores
    por serem poucos,
e aqueles que olham pelas janelas
    enxergarem embaçado;

Verse 4

when the doors to the street are closed
and the sound of grinding fades;
when people rise up at the sound of birds,
but all their songs grow faint;

quando as portas da rua forem fechadas
    e diminuir o som da moagem;
quando o barulho das aves
    o fizer despertar,
mas o som de todas as canções
    lhe parecer fraco;

Verse 5

when people are afraid of heights
    and of dangers in the streets;
when the almond tree blossoms
    and the grasshopper drags itself along
    and desire no longer is stirred.
Then people go to their eternal home
    and mourners go about the streets.

quando você tiver medo de altura,
    e dos perigos das ruas;
quando florir a amendoeira,
    o gafanhoto for um peso
    e o desejo já não se despertar.
Então o homem se vai
    para o seu lar eterno,
e os pranteadores já vagueiam pelas ruas.

Verse 6

Remember him—before the silver cord is severed,
and the golden bowl is broken;
before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,
and the wheel broken at the well,

Sim, lembre-se dele,
    antes que se rompa o cordão de prata,
    ou se quebre a taça de ouro;
antes que o cântaro se despedace
    junto à fonte,
a roda se quebre junto ao poço,

Verse 7

and the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

o pó volte à terra, de onde veio,
e o espírito volte a Deus, que o deu.

Verse 8

“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher.^[a]
“Everything is meaningless!”

The Conclusion of the Matter

“Tudo sem sentido! Sem sentido!”,
diz o mestre.
“Nada faz sentido!
Nada faz sentido!”

Conclusão

Verse 9

Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.

Além de ser sábio, o mestre também ensinou conhecimento ao povo. Ele escutou, examinou e colecionou muitos provérbios.

Verse 10

The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.

Procurou também encontrar as palavras certas, e o que ele escreveu era reto e verdadeiro.

Verse 11

The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd.^[b]

As palavras dos sábios são como aguilhões, a coleção dos seus ditos como pregos bem fixados, provenientes do único Pastor.

Verse 12

Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.

Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.

Cuidado, meu filho; nada acrescente a eles.

Não há limite para a produção de livros, e estudar demais deixa exausto o corpo.

Verse 13

Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the duty of all mankind.

Agora que já se ouviu tudo,
aqui está a conclusão:
Tema a Deus
e obedeça aos seus mandamentos,
porque isso é o essencial para o homem^[a].

Verse 14

For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.

Pois Deus trará a julgamento
tudo o que foi feito,
inclusive tudo o que está escondido,
seja bom, seja mau.
