1 Samuel 10

Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance?^[a]

Samuel apanhou um jarro de óleo, derramou-o sobre a cabeça de Saul e o beijou, dizendo: “O Senhor o ungiu como líder da herança dele.^[a]

When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel’s tomb, at Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys you set out to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them and is worried about you. He is asking, “What shall I do about my son?”’

Hoje, quando você partir, encontrará dois homens perto do túmulo de Raquel, em Zelza, na fronteira de Benjamim. Eles lhe dirão: ‘As jumentas que você foi procurar já foram encontradas. Agora seu pai deixou de se importar com elas e está preocupado com vocês. Ele está perguntando: “Como encontrarei meu filho?”’

“Then you will go on from there until you reach the great tree of Tabor. Three men going up to worship God at Bethel will meet you there. One will be carrying three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine.

“Então, dali, você prosseguirá para o carvalho de Tabor. Três homens virão subindo ao santuário de Deus em Betel, e encontrarão você ali. Um estará levando três cabritos, outro três pães, e outro uma vasilha de couro cheia de vinho.

They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread, which you will accept from them.

Eles o cumprimentarão e lhe oferecerão dois pães, que você deve aceitar.

“After that you will go to Gibeah of God, where there is a Philistine outpost. As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place with lyres, timbrels, pipes and harps being played before them, and they will be prophesying.

“Depois você irá a Gibeá de Deus, onde há um destacamento filisteu. Ao chegar à cidade, você encontrará um grupo de profetas que virão descendo do altar do monte tocando liras, tamborins, flautas e harpas; e eles estarão profetizando.

The Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person.

O Espírito do Senhor se apossará de você, e com eles você profetizará^[b], e será um novo homem.

Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you.

Assim que esses sinais se cumprirem, faça o que achar melhor, pois Deus está com você.

“Go down ahead of me to Gilgal. I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do.”

“Vá na minha frente até Gilgal. Depois eu irei também, para oferecer holocaustos e sacrifícios de comunhão^[c], mas você deve esperar sete dias, até que eu chegue e lhe diga o que fazer”.

As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day.

Quando se virou para afastar-se de Samuel, Deus mudou o coração de Saul, e todos aqueles sinais se cumpriram naquele dia.

When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying.

Chegando a Gibeá, um grupo veio em sua direção; o Espírito de Deus se apossou dele, e ele profetizou no meio deles.

When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, “What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”

Quando os que já o conheciam viram-no profetizando com os profetas, perguntaram uns aos outros: “O que aconteceu ao filho de Quis? Saul também está entre os profetas?”

A man who lived there answered, “And who is their father?” So it became a saying: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

Um homem daquele lugar respondeu: “E quem é o pai deles?” De modo que isto se tornou um ditado: “Saul também está entre os profetas?”

After Saul stopped prophesying, he went to the high place.

Depois que Saul parou de profetizar, foi para o altar do monte.

Now Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where have you been?”

“Looking for the donkeys,” he said. “But when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”

Então o tio de Saul perguntou a ele e ao seu servo: “Aonde vocês foram?”

Ele respondeu: “Procurar as jumentas. Quando, porém, vimos que não seriam encontradas, fomos falar com Samuel”.

Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me what Samuel said to you.”

“O que Samuel lhes disse?”, perguntou o tio.

Saul replied, “He assured us that the donkeys had been found.” But he did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about the kingship.

Saul respondeu: “Ele nos garantiu que as jumentas tinham sido encontradas”. Todavia, Saul não contou ao tio o que Samuel tinha dito sobre o reino.

Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord at Mizpah

Samuel convocou o povo de Israel ao Senhor, em Mispá,

and said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’

e lhes disse: “Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: ‘Eu tirei Israel do Egito, e libertei vocês do poder do Egito e de todos os reinos que os oprimiam’.

But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king over us.’ So now present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans.”

Mas vocês agora rejeitaram o Deus que os salva de todas as suas desgraças e angústias. E disseram: ‘Não! Escolhe um rei para nós’. Por isso, agora, apresentem-se perante o Senhor, de acordo com as suas tribos e os seus clãs”.

When Samuel had all Israel come forward by tribes, the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot.

Tendo Samuel feito todas as tribos de Israel se aproximarem, a de Benjamim foi escolhida.

Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri’s clan was taken. Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found.

Então fez ir à frente a tribo de Benjamim, clã por clã, e o clã de Matri foi escolhido. Finalmente foi escolhido Saul, filho de Quis. Quando, porém, o procuraram, ele não foi encontrado.

So they inquired further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?”

And the Lord said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.”

Consultaram novamente o Senhor: “Ele já chegou?”

E o Senhor disse: “Sim, ele está escondido no meio da bagagem”.

They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller than any of the others.

Correram e o tiraram de lá. Quando ficou em pé no meio do povo, os mais altos só chegavam aos seus ombros.

Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the man the Lord has chosen? There is no one like him among all the people.”

Then the people shouted, “Long live the king!”

E Samuel disse a todos: “Vocês vêem o homem que o Senhor escolheu? Não há ninguém como ele entre todo o povo”.

Então todos gritaram: “Viva o rei!”

Samuel explained to the people the rights and duties of kingship. He wrote them down on a scroll and deposited it before the Lord. Then Samuel dismissed the people to go to their own homes.

Samuel expôs ao povo as leis do reino. Ele as escreveu num livro e o pôs perante o Senhor. Depois disso, Samuel mandou o povo de volta para as suas casas.

Saul also went to his home in Gibeah, accompanied by valiant men whose hearts God had touched.

Saul também foi para sua casa em Gibeá, acompanhado por guerreiros, cujo coração Deus tinha tocado.

But some scoundrels said, “How can this fellow save us?” They despised him and brought him no gifts. But Saul kept silent.

Alguns vadios, porém, disseram: “Como este homem pode nos salvar?” Desprezaram-no e não lhe trouxeram presente algum. Mas Saul ficou calado.
