1 Kings 12

Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.

Roboão foi a Siquém, onde todos os israelitas tinham se reunido para proclamá-lo rei.

When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from^[a] Egypt.

Assim que Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, que estava no Egito para onde tinha fugido do rei Salomão, soube disso, voltou de lá.

So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him:

Depois disso mandaram chamá-lo. Então ele e toda a assembléia de Israel foram ao encontro de Roboão e disseram:

“Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”

“Teu pai colocou sobre nós um jugo pesado, mas agora diminui o trabalho árduo e este jugo pesado, e nós te serviremos”.

Rehoboam answered, “Go away for three days and then come back to me.” So the people went away.

Roboão respondeu: “Voltem a mim daqui a três dias”. Então o povo foi embora.

Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.

O rei Roboão perguntou às autoridades que haviam servido ao seu pai Salomão durante a vida dele: “Como vocês me aconselham a responder a este povo?”

They replied, “If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.”

Eles responderam: “Se hoje fores um servo deste povo e servi-lo, dando-lhe uma resposta favorável, eles sempre serão teus servos”.

But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.

Roboão, contudo, rejeitou o conselho que as autoridades de Israel lhe tinham dado e consultou os jovens que haviam crescido com ele e o estavam servindo.

He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”

Perguntou-lhes: “Que conselho vocês me dão? Como devemos responder a este povo que me diz: ‘Diminui o jugo que teu pai colocou sobre nós’?”

The young men who had grown up with him replied, “These people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.

Os jovens que haviam crescido com ele responderam: “A este povo que te disse: ‘Teu pai colocou sobre nós um jugo pesado; torna-o mais leve’, dize: Meu dedo mínimo é mais grosso do que a cintura do meu pai.

My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”

Pois bem, meu pai lhes impôs um jugo pesado; eu o tornarei ainda mais pesado. Meu pai os castigou com simples chicotes; eu os castigarei com chicotes pontiagudos^[a]”.

Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.”

Três dias depois, Jeroboão e todo o povo voltaram a Roboão, segundo a orientação dada pelo rei: “Voltem a mim daqui a três dias”.

The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders,

E o rei lhes respondeu asperamente. Rejeitando o conselho das autoridades de Israel,

he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.”

seguiu o conselho dos jovens e disse: “Meu pai lhes tornou pesado o jugo; eu o tornarei ainda mais pesado. Meu pai os castigou com simples chicotes; eu os castigarei com chicotes pontiagudos”.

So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.

E o rei não ouviu o povo, pois esta mudança nos acontecimentos vinha da parte do Senhor, para que se cumprisse a palavra que o Senhor havia falado a Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, por meio do silonita Aías.

When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:

So the Israelites went home.

Quando todo o Israel viu que o rei se recusava a ouvi-los, respondeu ao rei:

E assim os israelitas foram para as suas casas.

But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.

Quanto, porém, aos israelitas que moravam nas cidades de Judá, Roboão continuou como rei deles.

King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,^[b] who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.

O rei Roboão enviou Adonirão^[b], chefe do trabalho forçado, mas todo o Israel o apedrejou até a morte. O rei, contudo, conseguiu subir em sua carruagem e fugir para Jerusalém.

So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

Dessa forma Israel se rebelou contra a dinastia de Davi, e assim permanece até hoje.

When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David.

Quando todos os israelitas souberam que Jeroboão tinha voltado, mandaram chamá-lo para a reunião da comunidade e o fizeram rei sobre todo o Israel. Somente a tribo de Judá permaneceu leal à dinastia de Davi.

When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered all Judah and the tribe of Benjamin—a hundred and eighty thousand able young men—to go to war against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam son of Solomon.

Quando Roboão, filho de Salomão. chegou em Jerusalém, convocou cento e oitenta mil homens de combate, das tribos de Judá e de Benjamim, para guerrearem contra Israel e recuperarem o reino.

But this word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:

Entretanto, veio esta palavra de Deus a Semaías, homem de Deus:

“Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to all Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people,

“Diga a Roboão, filho de Salomão, rei de Judá, às tribos de Judá e Benjamim, e ao restante do povo:

‘This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.’” So they obeyed the word of the Lord and went home again, as the Lord had ordered.

Golden Calves at Bethel and Dan

Assim diz o Senhor: Não saiam à guerra contra os seus irmãos israelitas. Voltem para casa, todos vocês, pois fui eu que fiz isso”. E eles obedeceram à palavra do Senhor e voltaram para as suas casas, conforme o Senhor tinha ordenado.

Bezerros de Ouro em Betel e em Dã

Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built up Peniel.^[c]

Jeroboão fortificou Siquém, nos montes de Efraim, onde passou a morar. Depois saiu e fortificou Peniel.

Jeroboam thought to himself, “The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David.

Jeroboão pensou: “O reino agora provavelmente voltará para a dinastia de Davi.

If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam.”

Se este povo subir a Jerusalém para oferecer sacrifícios no templo do Senhor, novamente dedicarão sua lealdade ao senhor deles, Roboão, rei de Judá. Eles vão me matar e vão voltar para o rei Roboão”.

After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

Depois de aconselhar-se, o rei fez dois bezerros de ouro e disse ao povo: “Vocês já subiram muito a Jerusalém. Aqui estão os seus deuses, ó Israel, que tirarama vocês do Egito”.

One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan.

Mandou pôr um bezerro em Betel, e o outro em Dã.

And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.^[d]

E isso veio a ser um pecado, pois o povo ia até Dã para adorar aquele bezerro.

Jeroboam built shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites.

Jeroboão construiu altares idólatras e designou sacerdotes dentre o povo, apesar de não serem levitas.

He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made.

Instituiu uma festa no décimo quinto dia do oitavo mês, semelhante à festa realizada em Judá, e ofereceu sacrifícios no altar. Ele fez isso em Betel, onde sacrificou aos bezerros que havia feito. Também estabeleceu lá sacerdotes nos seus altares idólatras.

On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel. So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings.

No décimo quinto dia do oitavo mês, data que ele mesmo escolheu, ofereceu sacrifícios no altar que havia construído em Betel. Assim ele instituiu a festa para os israelitas e foi ao altar para queimar incenso.
