When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relationship to the Lord, she came to test Solomon with hard questions.

A rainha de Sabá soube da fama que Salomão tinha alcançado, graças ao nome do Senhor, e foi a Jerusalém para pô-lo à prova com perguntas difíceis.

Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravan—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind.

Quando chegou, acompanhada de uma enorme caravana, com camelos carregados de especiarias, grande quantidade de ouro e pedras preciosas, fez a Salomão todas as perguntas que tinha em mente.

Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her.

Salomão respondeu a todas; nenhuma lhe foi tão difícil que não pudesse responder.

When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built,

Vendo toda a sabedoria de Salomão, bem como o palácio que ele havia construído,

the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at^[a] the temple of the Lord, she was overwhelmed.

o que era servido em sua mesa, o alojamento de seus oficiais, os criados e os copeiros, todos uniformizados, e os holocaustos^[a] que ele fazia no^[b] templo do Senhor, a visitante ficou impressionada.

She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true.

Então ela disse ao rei: “Tudo o que ouvi em meu país acerca de tuas realizações e de tua sabedoria é verdade.

But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard.

Mas eu não acreditava no que diziam, até ver com os meus próprios olhos. Na realidade, não me contaram nem a metade; tu ultrapassas em muito o que ouvi, tanto em sabedoria como em riqueza.

How happy your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom!

Como devem ser felizes os homens da tua corte, que continuamente estão diante de ti e ouvem a tua sabedoria!

Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he has made you king to maintain justice and righteousness.”

Bendito seja o Senhor, o teu Deus, que se agradou de ti e te colocou no trono de Israel. Por causa do amor eterno do Senhor para com Israel, ele te fez rei, para manter a justiça e a retidão”.

And she gave the king 120 talents^[b] of gold, large quantities of spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

E ela deu ao rei quatro mil e duzentos quilos^[c] de ouro e grande quantidade de especiarias e pedras preciosas. Nunca mais foram trazidas tantas especiarias quanto as que a rainha de Sabá deu ao rei Salomão.

(Hiram’s ships brought gold from Ophir; and from there they brought great cargoes of almugwood^[c] and precious stones.

(Os navios de Hirão, que carregavam ouro de Ofir, também trouxeram de lá grande quantidade de madeira de junípero e pedras preciosas.

The king used the almugwood to make supports^[d] for the temple of the Lord and for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. So much almugwood has never been imported or seen since that day.)

O rei utilizou a madeira para fazer a escadaria do templo do Senhor e a do palácio real, além de harpas e liras para os músicos. Nunca mais foi importada nem se viu tanta madeira de junípero.)

King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for, besides what he had given her out of his royal bounty. Then she left and returned with her retinue to her own country.

Solomon’s Splendor

O rei Salomão deu à rainha de Sabá tudo o que ela desejou e pediu, além do que já lhe tinha dado por sua generosidade real. Então ela e os seus servos voltaram para o seu país.

The weight of the gold that Solomon received yearly was 666 talents,^[e]

O peso do ouro que Salomão recebia anualmente era de vinte e três mil e trezentos quilos,

not including the revenues from merchants and traders and from all the Arabian kings and the governors of the territories.

fora os impostos pagos por mercadores e comerciantes, por todos os reis da Arábia e pelos governadores do país.

King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred shekels^[f] of gold went into each shield.

O rei Salomão fez duzentos escudos grandes de ouro batido, utilizando três quilos e seiscentos gramas^[d] de ouro em cada um.

He also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold, with three minas^[g] of gold in each shield. The king put them in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon.

Também fez trezentos escudos pequenos de ouro batido, com um quilo e oitocentos gramas de ouro em cada um. O rei os colocou no Palácio da Floresta do Líbano.

Then the king made a great throne covered with ivory and overlaid with fine gold.

O rei mandou fazer ainda um grande trono de marfim revestido de ouro puro.

The throne had six steps, and its back had a rounded top. On both sides of the seat were armrests, with a lion standing beside each of them.

O trono tinha seis degraus, e o seu encosto tinha a parte alta arredondada. Nos dois lados do assento havia braços, com um leão junto a cada braço.

Twelve lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing like it had ever been made for any other kingdom.

Havia doze leões nos seis degraus, um em cada ponta de cada degrau. Nada igual havia sido feito em nenhum outro reino.

All King Solomon’s goblets were gold, and all the household articles in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. Nothing was made of silver, because silver was considered of little value in Solomon’s days.

Todas as taças do rei Salomão eram de ouro, bem como todos os utensílios do Palácio da Floresta do Líbano. Não havia nada de prata, pois a prata quase não tinha valor nos dias de Salomão.

The king had a fleet of trading ships^[h] at sea along with the ships of Hiram. Once every three years it returned, carrying gold, silver and ivory, and apes and baboons.

O rei tinha no mar uma frota de navios mercantes^[e] junto com os navios de Hirão. Cada três anos a frota voltava, trazendo ouro, prata, marfim, macacos e pavões.

King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth.

O rei Salomão era o mais rico e o mais sábio de todos os reis da terra.

The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.

Gente de todo o mundo pedia audiência a Salomão para ouvir a sabedoria que Deus lhe tinha dado.

Year after year, everyone who came brought a gift—articles of silver and gold, robes, weapons and spices, and horses and mules.

Ano após ano, todos os visitantes traziam algum presente: utensílios de prata e de ouro, mantos, armas e especiarias, cavalos e mulas.

Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,^[i] which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem.

Salomão juntou carros e cavalos; possuía mil e quatrocentos carros e doze mil cavalos^[f], dos quais mantinha uma parte nas guarnições de algumas cidades e a outra perto dele, em Jerusalém.

The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills.

O rei tornou a prata tão comum em Jerusalém quanto as pedras, e o cedro tão numeroso quanto as figueiras bravas da Sefelá^[g].

Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue^[j]—the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price.

Os cavalos de Salomão eram importados do Egito^[h] e da Cilícia^[i], onde os fornecedores do rei os compravam.

They imported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.^[k] They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.

Importavam do Egito um carro por sete quilos e duzentos gramas^[j] de prata, e um cavalo por um quilo e oitocentos gramas, e os exportavam para todos os reis dos hititas e dos arameus.
