Genesis 26

Now there was a famine in the land—besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time—and Isaac went to Abimelek king of the Philistines in Gerar.

În ţară a venit o foamete, alta decât foametea care fusese pe vremea lui Avraam, iar Isaac s-a dus în Gherar la

Abimelek, regele filistenilor.

The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live.

Domnul i S-a arătat lui Isaac şi i-a zis: „Nu coborî în Egipt, ci locuieşte în ţara despre care îţi voi spune.

Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.

Locuieşte în această ţară; Eu voi fi cu tine şi te voi binecuvânta, pentru că ţie şi seminţei^[a] tale vă voi da toate aceste ţinuturi; astfel, voi împlini jurământul pe care i l-am făcut tatălui tău, Avraam.

I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring^[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,^[b]

Îţi voi face urmaşii^[b] la fel de numeroşi precum stelele cerului şi le voi da toate aceste ţinuturi; prin sămânţa ta vor fi binecuvântate toate neamurile pământului,

because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.”

pentru că Avraam a ascultat glasul Meu şi a păzit principiile, poruncile, orânduirile şi legile Mele.“

So Isaac stayed in Gerar.

Astfel, Isaac a locuit în Gherar.

When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” because he was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful.”

Atunci când oamenii din acel loc îl întrebau despre soţia lui, el le răspundea că este sora lui, deoarece se temea să le spună că este soţia lui, crezând că oamenii locului îl vor omorî din cauza Rebecăi, pentru că era frumoasă.

When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelek king of the Philistines looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.

După ce a stat mai multă vreme acolo, s-a întâmplat că regele Abimelek s-a uitat pe fereastră şi l-a văzut pe Isaac dezmierdând-o pe soţia sa, Rebeca.

So Abimelek summoned Isaac and said, “She is really your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?”

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her.”

Abimelek l-a chemat pe Isaac şi i-a zis:

– Cu siguranţă, ea este soţia ta! Atunci de ce ai pretins că este sora ta?

– Pentru că mă temeam că voi muri din cauza ei, a răspuns Isaac.

Then Abimelek said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”

– Ce ne-ai făcut? a continuat Abimelek. Unul dintre oamenii din popor s-ar fi putut culca cu soţia ta şi astfel ai fi adus vina asupra noastră.

So Abimelek gave orders to all the people: “Anyone who harms this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”

Prin urmare, Abimelek a poruncit întregului popor: „Oricine se va atinge de acest om sau de soţia lui va fi omorât.“

Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him.

Isaac a semănat în acea ţară şi, în acelaşi an, a recoltat însutit, pentru că Domnul l-a binecuvântat.

The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.

El s-a îmbogăţit, iar bogăţia a continuat să-i crească până când a ajuns foarte bogat.

He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.

Avea turme de oi, cirezi de vite şi mulţi sclavi; de aceea filistenii îl invidiau.

So all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth.

Ei au astupat, umplând cu pământ, toate fântânile pe care sclavii tatălui său, Avraam, le săpaseră pe când acesta era în viaţă.

Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.”

Abimelek i-a zis lui Isaac: „Pleacă de la noi, deoarece ai ajuns mult mai puternic decât noi.“

So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled.

Atunci Isaac a plecat de acolo, şi-a aşezat tabăra în valea Gherar şi a locuit acolo.

Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

El a săpat din nou fântânile care fuseseră săpate pe vremea tatălui său, Avraam, întrucât filistenii le-au astupat după moartea lui Avraam; el le-a dat acestora aceleaşi nume pe care tatăl său le dăduse înainte.

Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there.

Sclavii lui Isaac au săpat în vale şi au descoperit acolo o fântână cu apă proaspătă,

But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek,^[c] because they disputed with him.

dar păstorii din Gherar s-au certat cu păstorii lui Isaac, zicând: „Apa este a noastră.“ Isaac i-a pus fântânii numele Esek^[c], pentru că ei s-au certat cu el.

Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.^[d]

Apoi au săpat o altă fântână, dar ei s-au certat şi pentru aceasta; de aceea i-a pus numele Sitna^[d].

He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth,^[e] saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”

Isaac a plecat de acolo şi a săpat o altă fântână, pentru care nu s-au mai certat; de aceea i-a pus numele Rehobot^[e], zicând: „Acum Domnul ne-a făcut loc şi vom fi roditori în ţară.“

From there he went up to Beersheba.

De acolo a plecat la Beer-Şeba,

That night the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”

iar în noaptea aceea Domnul i S-a arătat şi i-a zis: „Eu sunt Dumnezeul tatălui tău, Avraam; nu te teme, pentru că Eu sunt cu tine; te voi binecuvânta şi-ţi voi înmulţi urmaşii datorită robului Meu Avraam.“

Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.

Isaac a zidit acolo un altar şi a chemat Numele Domnului; el şi-a întins cortul în acel loc, iar sclavii săi au săpat acolo o fântână.

Meanwhile, Abimelek had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.

După aceea, Abimelek a venit la el din Gherar, împreună cu Ahuzat, sfetnicul său, şi cu Pihol, conducătorul oştirii sale.

Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?”

Isaac i-a întrebat:

– De ce aţi venit la mine, când voi m-aţi urât şi m-aţi izgonit de la voi?

They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’—between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you

Ei i-au răspuns:

– Vedem clar că Domnul este cu tine şi ne-am gândit că trebuie să încheiem un jurământ între noi. Să încheiem acest legământ între noi:

that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the Lord.”

promite-ne că nu ne vei face nici un rău, aşa cum nici noi nu ne-am atins de tine şi ţi-am făcut numai bine, lăsându-te să pleci în pace. Acum tu eşti binecuvântat de Domnul.

Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

Isaac le-a dat un ospăţ, iar ei au mâncat şi au băut.

Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.

A doua zi, dimineaţa, s-au sculat devreme şi au încheiat împreună legământul; apoi Isaac i-a lăsat să plece, iar ei au plecat de la el în pace.

That day Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, “We’ve found water!”

În aceeaşi zi, sclavii lui Isaac au venit şi l-au anunţat despre fântâna pe care o săpaseră, zicându-i că au dat de apă.

He called it Shibah,^[f] and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.^[g]

Jacob Takes Esau’s Blessing

El i-a pus numele Şeba^[f]. De aceea numele cetăţii este Beer-Şeba până în ziua de azi.

When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.

La vârsta de patruzeci de ani, Esau s-a căsătorit cu Iudita, fiica hititului Beeri, şi cu Basmat, fiica hititului Elon,

They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

însă ele au fost o sursă de amărăciune pentru Isaac şi Rebeca.
