Job 34

“Hear my words, you wise men;
    listen to me, you men of learning.

«اسْتَمِعُوا إِلَى أَقْوَالِي أَيُّهَا الْحُكَمَاءُ، وَأَصْغُوا إِلَيَّ يَا ذَوِي الْمَعْرِفَةِ،

For the ear tests words
    as the tongue tastes food.

لأَنَّ الأُذُنَ تُمَحِّصُ الأَقْوَالَ كَمَا يَتَذَوَّقُ الْحَنَكُ الطَّعَامَ.

Let us discern for ourselves what is right;
    let us learn together what is good.

لِنَتَدَاوَلْ فِيمَا بَيْنَنَا لِنُمَيِّزَ مَا هُوَ أَصْوَبُ لَنَا، وَنَتَعَلَّمَ مَعاً مَا هُوَ صَالِحٌ.

“Job says, ‘I am innocent,
    but God denies me justice.

يَقُولُ أَيُّوبُ: ’إِنِّي بَارٌّ، وَلَكِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ تَنَكَّرَ لِحَقِّي،

Although I am right,
    I am considered a liar;
although I am guiltless,
    his arrow inflicts an incurable wound.’

وَمَعَ أَنِّي مُحِقٌّ فَأَنَا أُدْعَى كَاذِباً، وَمَعَ أَنِّي بَرِيءٌ فَإِنَّ سَهْمَهُ أَصَابَنِي بِجُرْحٍ مُسْتَعْصٍ‘.

Is there anyone like Job,
    who drinks scorn like water?

فَمَنْ هُوَ نَظِيرُ أَيُّوبَ الَّذِي يَجْرَعُ الْهُزْءَ كَالْمَاءِ،

He keeps company with evildoers;
    he associates with the wicked.

يُوَاظِبُ عَلَى مُعَاشَرَةِ فَاعِلِي الإِثْمِ، وَيَأْتَلِفُ مَعَ الأَشْرَارِ،

For he says, ‘There is no profit
    in trying to please God.’

لأَنَّهُ يَقُولُ: لَا يَنْتَفِعُ الإِنْسَانُ شَيْئاً مِنْ إِرْضَاءِ اللهِ.

“So listen to me, you men of understanding.
    Far be it from God to do evil,
    from the Almighty to do wrong.

لِذَلِكَ أَصْغُوا إِلَيَّ يَا ذَوِي الْفَهْمِ: حَاشَا لِلهِ أَنْ يَرْتَكِبَ شَرّاً أَوْ لِلْقَدِيرِ أَنْ يَقْتَرِفَ خَطَأً،

He repays everyone for what they have done;
    he brings on them what their conduct deserves.

لأَنَّهُ يُجَازِي الإِنْسَانَ بِمُوْجِبِ أَعْمَالِهِ، وَبِمُقْتَضَى طَرِيقِهِ يُحَاسِبُهُ.

It is unthinkable that God would do wrong,
    that the Almighty would pervert justice.

إِذْ حَاشَا لِلهِ أَنْ يَرْتَكِبَ شَرّاً، وَالْقَدِيرِ أَنْ يُعَوِّجَ الْقَضَاءَ.

Who appointed him over the earth?
    Who put him in charge of the whole world?

مَنْ وَكَّلَ اللهَ بِالأَرْضِ؟ وَمَنْ عَهِدَ إِلَيْهِ بِالْمَسْكُونَةِ؟

If it were his intention
    and he withdrew his spirit^[a] and breath,

إِنِ اسْتَرْجَعَ رُوحَهُ إِلَيْهِ وَاسْتَجْمَعَ نَسَمَتَهُ إِلَى نَفْسِهِ

all humanity would perish together
    and mankind would return to the dust.

فَالْبَشَرُ جَمِيعاً يَفْنَوْنَ مَعاً، وَيَعُودُ الإِنْسَانُ إِلَى التُّرَابِ.

“If you have understanding, hear this;
    listen to what I say.

فَإِنْ كُنْتَ مِنْ أُولِي الْفَهْمِ، فَاسْتَمِعْ إِلَى هَذَا، وَأَنْصِتْ لِمَا أَقُولُ:

Can someone who hates justice govern?
    Will you condemn the just and mighty One?

أَيُمْكِنُ لِمُبْغِضِ الْعَدْلِ أَنْ يَحْكُمَ؟ أَتَدِينُ الْبَارَّ الْقَدِيرَ؟

Is he not the One who says to kings, ‘You are worthless,’
    and to nobles, ‘You are wicked,’

الَّذِي يَقُولُ لِلْمَلِكِ: أَنْتَ عَدِيمُ الْقِيمَةِ، وَلِلنُّبَلاءِ: أَنْتُمْ أَشْرَارٌ؟

who shows no partiality to princes
    and does not favor the rich over the poor,
    for they are all the work of his hands?

الَّذِي لَا يُحَابِي الأُمَرَاءَ، وَلا يُؤْثِرُ الأَغْنِيَاءَ عَلَى الْفُقَرَاءِ، لأَنَّهُمْ جَمِيعاً عَمَلُ يَدَيْهِ.

They die in an instant, in the middle of the night;
    the people are shaken and they pass away;
    the mighty are removed without human hand.

فِي لَحْظَةٍ يَمُوتُونَ، تُفَاجِئُهُمُ الْمَنِيَّةُ فِي مُنْتَصَفِ اللَّيْلِ، تَتَزَعْزَعُ الشُّعُوبُ فَيَفْنَوْنَ، وَيُسْتَأْصَلُ الأَعِزَّاءُ مِنْ غَيْرِ عَوْنٍ بَشَرِيٍّ،

“His eyes are on the ways of mortals;
    he sees their every step.

لأَنَّ عَيْنَيْهِ عَلَى طُرُقِ الإِنْسَانِ وَهُوَ يُرَاقِبُ خَطْوَاتِهِ.

There is no deep shadow, no utter darkness,
    where evildoers can hide.

لَا تُوجَدُ ظُلْمَةٌ، وَلا ظِلُّ مَوْتٍ، يَتَوَارَى فِيهِمَا فَاعِلُو الإِثْمِ،

God has no need to examine people further,
    that they should come before him for judgment.

لأَنَّهُ لَا يَحْتَاجُ أَنْ يَفْحَصَ الإِنْسَانَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى حَتَّى يَدْعُوهُ لِلْمُثُولِ أَمَامَهُ فِي مُحَاكَمَةٍ.

Without inquiry he shatters the mighty
    and sets up others in their place.

يُحَطِّمُ الأَعِزَّاءَ مِنْ غَيْرِ إِجْرَاءِ تَحْقِيقٍ، وَيُقِيمُ آخَرِينَ مَكَانَهُمْ

Because he takes note of their deeds,
    he overthrows them in the night and they are crushed.

لِذَلِكَ هُوَ مُطَّلِعٌ عَلَى أَعْمَالِهِمْ، فَيُطِيحُ بِهِمْ فِي اللَّيْلِ فَيُسْحَقُونَ.

He punishes them for their wickedness
    where everyone can see them,

يَضْرِبُهُمْ لِشَرِّهِمْ عَلَى مَرْأَى مِنَ النَّاسِ،

because they turned from following him
    and had no regard for any of his ways.

لأَنَّهُمُ انْحَرَفُوا عَنِ اتِّبَاعِهِ، وَلَمْ يَتَأَمَّلُوا فِي طُرُقِهِ،

They caused the cry of the poor to come before him,
    so that he heard the cry of the needy.

فَكَانُوا سَبَباً فِي ارْتِفَاعِ صُرَاخِ الْبَائِسِ إِلَيْهِ، وَاللهُ يَسْتَجِيبُ اسْتِغَاثَةَ الْمِسْكِينِ.

But if he remains silent, who can condemn him?
    If he hides his face, who can see him?
Yet he is over individual and nation alike,

فَإِنْ هَيْمَنَ بِسَكِينَتِهِ فَمَنْ يَدِينُهُ؟ وَإِنْ وَارَى وَجْهَهُ فَمَنْ يُعَايِنُهُ؟ سَوَاءٌ أَكَانُوا شَعْباً أَمْ فَرْداً

    to keep the godless from ruling,
    from laying snares for the people.

لِكَيْ لَا يَسُودَ الْفَاجِرُ، لِئَلّا تَعْثُرَ الأُمَّةُ.

“Suppose someone says to God,
    ‘I am guilty but will offend no more.

هَلْ قَالَ أَحَدٌ للهِ: لَقَدْ تَحَمَّلْتُ الْعِقَابَ فَلَنْ أَعُودَ إِلَى الإِسَاءَةِ؟

Teach me what I cannot see;
    if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.’

عَلِّمْنِي مَا لَا أَرَاهُ، وَإِنْ كُنْتُ قَدْ أَثِمْتُ فَإِنَّنِي عَنْهُ أَرْتَدِعُ.

Should God then reward you on your terms,
    when you refuse to repent?
You must decide, not I;
    so tell me what you know.

أَيُجْزِيكَ اللهُ إِذاً بِمُقْتَضَى رَأْيِكَ إِذَا رَفَضْتَ التَّوْبَةَ؟ لأَنَّ عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ أَنْ تَخْتَارَ لَا أَنَا، فَأَخْبِرْنِي بِمَا تَعْرِفُ.

“Men of understanding declare,
    wise men who hear me say to me,

إِنَّ ذَوِي الْفَهْمِ يُعْلِنُونَ، وَالْحُكَمَاءَ الَّذِينَ يُنْصِتُونَ إِلَى كَلامِي يَقُولُونَ لِي:

‘Job speaks without knowledge;
    his words lack insight.’

إِنَّ أَيُّوبَ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِجَهْلٍ، وَكَلامُهُ يَفْتَقِرُ إِلَى التَّعَقُّلِ.

Oh, that Job might be tested to the utmost
    for answering like a wicked man!

يَا لَيْتَ أَيُّوبَ يُمْتَحَنُ أَقْسَى امْتِحَانٍ، لأَنَّهُ أَجَابَ كَمَا يُجِيبُ أَهْلُ الشَّرِّ.

To his sin he adds rebellion;
    scornfully he claps his hands among us
    and multiplies his words against God.”
