Verse 1
This is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah’s sons, who themselves had sons after the flood.

The Japhethites

هَذَا سِجِلُّ مَوَالِيدِ سَامٍ وَحَامٍ وَيَافَثَ أَبْنَاءِ نُوحٍ، وَمَنْ وُلِدَ لَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ الطُّوفَانِ.

أبناء يافث

Verse 2
The sons[a] of Japheth:

Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshek and Tiras.

أَبْنَاءُ يَافَثَ: جُومَرُ وَمَاجُوجُ وَمَادَايُ وَيَاوَانُ وَتُوبَالُ وَمَاشَكُ وَتِيرَاسُ.
Verse 3
The sons of Gomer:

Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah.

وَأَبْنَاءُ جُومَرَ: أَشْكَنَازُ وَرِيفَاثُ وَتُوجَرْمَةُ.
Verse 4
The sons of Javan:

Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittites and the Rodanites.[b]

وَأَبْنَاءُ يَاوَانَ: أَلِيشَةُ وَتَرْشِيشُ وَكِتِّيمُ وَدُودَانِيمُ.
Verse 5
(From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.)

The Hamites

وَتَفَرَّعَ مِنْ هَؤُلاءِ سُكَّانُ الْجَزَائِرِ وَتَفَرَّقُوا فِي مَنَاطِقِهِمْ حَسَبَ قَبَائِلِهِمْ وَأُمَمِهِمْ، وَلُغَاتِهِمْ.

أبناء حام

Verse 6
The sons of Ham:

Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan.

وَأَبْنَاءُ حَامٍ: كُوشٌ وَمِصْرَايِمُ وَفُوطُ وَكَنْعَانُ.
Verse 7
The sons of Cush:

Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteka.

The sons of Raamah:

Sheba and Dedan.

وَأَبْنَاءُ كُوشٍ: سَبَا، وَحَوِيلَةُ، وَسَبْتَةُ وَرَعْمَةُ وَسَبْتَكَا. وَأَبْنَاءُ رَعْمَةَ: سَبَا وَدَدَانُ.
Verse 8
Cush was the father[c] of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth.
وَأَنْجَبَ كُوْشُ نِمْرُودَ الَّذِي مَا لَبِثَ أَنْ أَصْبَحَ عَاتِياً فِي الأَرْضِ.
Verse 9
He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.”
كَانَ صَيَّاداً عَاتِياً أَمَامَ الرَّبِّ، لِذَلِكَ يُقَالُ: «كَنِمْرُودَ جَبَّارُّ صَيْدٍ أَمَامَ الرَّبِّ».
Verse 10
The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in[d] Shinar.[e]
وَقَدْ تَكَوَّنَتْ مَمْلَكَتُهُ أَوَّلَ الأَمْرِ مِنْ بَابِلَ وَأَرَكَ وَأَكَّدَ وَكَلْنَةَ فِي أَرْضِ شِنْعَارَ.
Verse 11
From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir,[f] Calah
وَمِنْ تِلْكَ الأَرْضِ خَرَجَ أَشُّورُ وَبَنَى مُدُنَ نِينَوَى وَرَحُبُوتَ عَيْرَ وَكَالَحَ،
Verse 12
and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city.

وَرَسَنَ الْوَاقِعَةَ بَيْنَ نِينَوَى وَكَالَحَ. وَهِيَ الْمَدِينَةُ الْكَبِيرَةُ.
Verse 13
Egypt was the father of

the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites,

وَمِنْ مِصْرَايِمَ تَحَدَّرَتْ هَذِهِ الْقَبَائِلُ: اللُّودِيُّونَ وَالْعَنَامِيُّونَ، وَاللهَابِيُّونَ وَالنَّفْتُوحِيُّونَ
Verse 14
Pathrusites, Kasluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and Caphtorites.

وَالْفَتْرُوسِيُّونَ وَالْكَسْلُوحِيُّونَ. وَمِنْهُمْ تَحَدَّرَ الْفِلِسْطِينِيُّونَ وَالْكَفْتُورِيُّونَ.
Verse 15
Canaan was the father of

Sidon his firstborn,[g] and of the Hittites,

وَأَنْجَبَ كَنْعَانُ صِيدُونَ ابْنَهُ الْبِكْرَ ثُمَّ حِثًّا،
Verse 16
Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites,
وَمِنْهُ تَحَدَّرَتْ قَبَائِلُ الْيَبُوسِيِّينَ وَالأَمُورِيِّينَ وَالْجِرْجَاشِيِّينَ،
Verse 17
Hivites, Arkites, Sinites,
وَالْحِوِّيِّينَ وَالْعَرْقِيِّينَ وَالسِّينِيِّينَ،
Verse 18
Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites.

Later the Canaanite clans scattered

وَالأَرْوَادِيِّينَ وَالصَّمَارِيِّينَ وَالْحَمَاتِيِّينَ، وَبَعْدَ ذَلِكَ انْتَشَرَتِ الْقَبَائِلُ الْكَنْعَانِيَّةُ
Verse 19
and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, as far as Lasha.

فِي الأَرَاضِي الْوَاقِعَةِ بَيْنَ صِيدُونَ وَغَزَّةَ مُرُوراً بِجَرَارَ، وَبَيْنَ صِيدُونَ وَلاشَعَ مُرُوراً بِسَدُومَ وَعَمُورَةَ وَأَدْمَةَ وَصَبُويِيمَ.
Verse 20
These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

The Semites

كَانَ هَؤُلاءِ هُمُ الْمُنْحَدِرُونَ مِنْ حَامٍ بِحَسَبِ قَبَائِلِهِمْ وَلُغَاتِهِمْ وَبُلْدَانِهِمْ وَشُعُوبِهِمْ.

أبناء سام

Verse 21
Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was[h] Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.

وَأَنْجَبَ سَامٌ، أَخُو يَافَثَ الأَكْبَرُ، أَبْنَاءً. وَمِنْهُ تَحَدَّرَ جَمِيعُ بَنِي عَابِرَ.
Verse 22
The sons of Shem:

Elam, Ashur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram.

أَمَّا أَبْنَاءُ سَامٍ فَهُمْ: عِيلامُ وَأَشُّورُ وَأَرْفَكْشَادُ وَلُودُ وَأَرَامُ
Verse 23
The sons of Aram:

Uz, Hul, Gether and Meshek.[i]

وَأَبْنَاءُ أَرَامَ: عُوصُ، وَحُولُ، وَجَاثَرُ وَمَاشُ.
Verse 24
Arphaxad was the father of[j] Shelah,

and Shelah the father of Eber.

وَأَنْجَبَ أَرْفَكْشَادُ شَالَحَ، وَوَلَدَ شَالَحُ عَابِرَ.
Verse 25
Two sons were born to Eber:

One was named Peleg,[k] because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.

وَوُلِدَ لِعَابِرَ ابْنَانِ: اسْمُ أَحَدِهِمَا فَالَجُ (وَمَعْنَاهُ انْقِسَامٌ) لأَنَّ أَهْلَ الأَرْضِ انْقَسَمُوا فِي أَيَّامِهِ. وَاسْمُ أَخِيهِ يَقْطَانُ.
Verse 26
Joktan was the father of

Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,

وَأَنْجَبَ يَقْطَانُ أَلْمُودَادَ وَشَالَفَ وَحَضَرْمَوْتَ وَيَارَحَ،
Verse 27
Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
وَهَدُورَامَ وَأُوزَالَ وَدِقْلَةَ،
Verse 28
Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
وَعُوبَالَ وَأَبِيمَايِلَ وَشَبَا،
Verse 29
Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan.

وَأُوفِيرَ وَحَوِيلَةَ وَيُوبَابَ. وَهَؤُلاءِ جَمِيعُهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ يَقْطَانَ.
Verse 30
The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country.

وَقَدِ اسْتَوْطَنُوا فِي الأَرَاضِي الْوَاقِعَةِ بَيْنَ مِيشَا وَالتِّلالِ الشَّرْقِيَّةِ مِنْ جَبَلِ سَفَارَ.
Verse 31
These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

هَؤُلاءِ هُمُ الْمُنْحَدِرُونَ مِنْ سَامٍ حَسَبَ قَبَائِلِهِمْ وَلُغَاتِهِمْ وَبُلْدَانِهِمْ وَشُعُوبِهِمْ.

Verse 32
These are the clans of Noah’s sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.

هَذِهِ هِيَ الْقَبَائِلُ الْمُنْحَدِرَةُ مِنْ أَبْنَاءِ نُوحٍ حَسَبَ شُعُوبِهِمْ، وَمِنْهُمُ انْتَشَرَتِ الأُمَمُ فِي الأَرْضِ بَعْدَ الطُّوفَانِ.
