Ephesians 5

Ephesians 5

NIV — New International Version Bible (NIV)
NASB — New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Verse 1
— not in NIV
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;
Verse 2
and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

and walk in love, just as Christ also loved [a]you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God [b]as a fragrant aroma.

Verse 3
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.
But immorality [c]or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among [d]saints;
Verse 4
Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.
and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.
Verse 5
For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[a]
For this you know with certainty, that no [e]immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

Verse 6
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
Verse 7
Therefore do not be partners with them.

Therefore do not be partakers with them;
Verse 8
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light
Verse 9
(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
(for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth),
Verse 10
and find out what pleases the Lord.
[f]trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
Verse 11
Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.
Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even [g]expose them;
Verse 12
It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.
Verse 13
But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.
But all things become visible when they are [h]exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.
Verse 14
This is why it is said:

“Wake up, sleeper,
    rise from the dead,
    and Christ will shine on you.”

For this reason [i]it says,

“Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”

Verse 15
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,
Therefore [j]be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,
Verse 16
making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
[k]making the most of your time, because the days are evil.
Verse 17
Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Verse 18
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,
And do not get drunk with wine, [l]for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
Verse 19
speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,
speaking to [m]one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;
Verse 20
always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Instructions for Christian Households

always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to [n]God, even the Father;
Verse 21
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

[o]and be subject to one another in the [p]fear of Christ.

Marriage Like Christ and the Church

Verse 22
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.
Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
Verse 23
For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.
For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.
Verse 24
Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

Verse 25
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,
Verse 26
to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word,
so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
Verse 27
and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
that He might present to Himself the church [q]in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.
Verse 28
In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;
Verse 29
After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—
for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church,
Verse 30
for we are members of his body.
because we are members of His body.
Verse 31
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[c]
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.
Verse 32
This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.
This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.
Verse 33
However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she [r]respects her husband.
