Genesis 32

^[a]Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

야곱은 계속 길을 가다가 하나님의 천사들을 만났다.

When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!” So he named that place Mahanaim.^[b]

그는 천사들을 보고 “이들은 하나님의 군대이다” 하며 그 곳 이름을 ^[a]‘마하나임’ 이라 하였다.

Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

야곱은 세일 땅 에돔에 있는 자기 형 에서에게 몇몇 종들을 먼저 보내며

He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord Esau: ‘Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now.

이렇게 전하라고 지시하였다. “형님, 동생 야곱이 문안드립니다. 저는 지금까지 라반 외삼촌과 함께 살았는데

I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.’”

이제 저에게도 소와 나귀와 양과 염소와 남녀 종들이 있습니다. 내가 형님의 너그러운 사랑을 바라고 이렇게 사람을 보내 안부를 전합니다.”

When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

그 종들은 에서에게 갔다가 돌아와서 “지금 주인의 형 에서가 주인을 만나려고 400명이나 되는 사람들을 거느리고 오고 있습니다” 하고 말하였다.

In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,^[c] and the flocks and herds and camels as well.

그러자 야곱은 몹시 두려워하고 번민하며 자기와 함께 있는 사람들과 양과 소와 낙타를 두 떼로 나누고

He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group,^[d] the group^[e] that is left may escape.”

“에서가 와서 한 떼를 치면 나머지 한 떼는 도망할 수 있을 것이다” 하며 혼자 중얼거렸다.

Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’

그러고서 야곱은 이렇게 기도하였다. “내 할아버지 아브라함의 하나님, 내 아버지 이삭의 하나님 여호와여, 주께서는 전에 나에게 ‘네 고향 네 친척에게 돌아가거라. 내가 너에게 은혜를 베풀겠다’ 하고 말씀하셨습니다.

I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.

나는 주께서 나에게 보여 주신 모든 자비와 신실하심을 조금도 감당할 수 없습니다. 내가 지팡이 하나만 가지고 이 요단을 건넜는데 지금은 두 떼를 이루었습니다.

Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.

내가 주께 간절히 기도합니다. 나를 내 형 에서의 손에서 구해 주소서. 그가 와서 나와 내 처자들을 칠까 두렵습니다.

But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’”

주께서는 ‘내가 너에게 은혜를 베풀어 네 후손을 셀 수 없는 바다의 모래처럼 많게 하겠다’ 고 말씀하셨습니다.”

He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau:

야곱은 거기서 밤을 새고 자기 형 에서에게 보낼 선물을 준비했는데

two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

그것은 암염소 200마리, 숫염소 20마리, 암양 200마리, 숫양 20마리,

thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

젖 짜는 낙타 30마리와 그 새끼들, 암소 40마리, 황소 10마리, 암나귀 20마리, 수나귀 10마리였다.

He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”

야곱은 그 짐승들을 여러 떼로 나누어 종들에게 맡기고 “너희는 각 떼마다 간격을 두어 짐승들을 몰고 먼저 가거라” 하고

He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’

제일 선두에 가는 자에게 이렇게 지시하였다. “내 형 에서가 너를 만나 ‘네 주인은 누구며 너는 어디로 가느냐? 네 앞에 있는 이 짐승들은 누구의 것이냐?’ 하고 묻거든

then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”

너는 그에게 ‘이것들은 당신의 종 야곱의 것인데 그의 주인 에서에게 보내는 선물입니다. 그리고 내 주인 야곱도 뒤에 오고 있습니다’ 하고 대답하여라.”

He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.

그는 또 두 번째와 세 번째 가는 자와 그리고 각 떼를 따라가는 모든 자들에게도 같은 지시를 하였다. “너희도 에서를 만나거든 이와 똑같이 말하고

And be sure to say, ‘Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”

‘당신의 종 야곱이 우리 뒤에 있습니다’ 하고 말하라.” 야곱이 이렇게 한 것은 먼저 선물을 보내 형의 감정을 누그러지게 한 다음에 그를 만나면 그가 자기를 용서할 것이라고 생각했기 때문이었다.

So Jacob’s gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.

Jacob Wrestles With God

그래서 야곱은 선물을 먼저 보내고 그 날 밤을 천막에서 보내게 되었다.

하나님과 씨름하는 야곱

That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

야곱은 밤에 일어나 두 아내와 두 여종과 그의 열 한 아들을 인도하여 얍복 나루를 건너게 하였다.

After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.

그는 그들과 그의 모든 소유를 그 시내 건너편으로 보내고

So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.

자기만 홀로 남았는데 어떤 사람이 와서 날이 새도록 야곱과 씨름하다가

When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

자기가 이길 수 없는 것을 알고 야곱의 엉덩이를 쳤다. 그래서 그와 씨름하는 중에 야곱은 엉덩이뼈가 위골되었다.

Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”

But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

그때 그 사람이 말하였다. “날이 새는데 나를 가게 하라.” “당신이 나에게 축복하지 않으면 내가 당신을 놓아 주지 않겠습니다.”

The man asked him, “What is your name?”

“Jacob,” he answered.

“네 이름이 무엇이냐?” “야곱입니다.”

Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,^[f] because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

“네가 하나님과 겨루고 사람과 겨루어 이겼으므로 다시는 네 이름을 야곱이라 하지 않고 ^[b]‘이스라엘’ 이라 부를 것이다.”

Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.

“당신의 이름을 나에게 말해 주십시오.” 그러자 그 사람은 “네가 어째서 내 이름을 묻느냐?” 하며 거기서 야곱에게 축복하였다.

So Jacob called the place Peniel,^[g] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”

그래서 야곱은 “내가 하나님과 대면하고서도 죽지 않고 살아 남았다” 하며 그 곳 이름을 ^[c]‘브니엘’ 이라 하였다.

The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,^[h] and he was limping because of his hip.

그가 브니엘을 떠날 때 해가 돋았는데 그는 엉덩이뼈가 위골되었기 때문에 절뚝거렸다.

Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.

그 사람이 야곱의 엉덩이 힘줄을 쳤으므로 이스라엘 사람들은 오늘날까지도 엉덩이뼈에 붙어 있는 큰 힘줄을 먹지 않는다.
