Joshua 17

This was the allotment for the tribe of Manasseh as Joseph’s firstborn, that is, for Makir, Manasseh’s firstborn. Makir was the ancestor of the Gileadites, who had received Gilead and Bashan because the Makirites were great soldiers.

ヨセフの子マナセの半部族がくじで割り当てられた地は次のとおり。マナセの長男で、ギルアデの父マキルの氏族は、〔ヨルダン川東岸の〕ギルアデとバシャンの地をすでに与えられていました。彼らが勇敢な戦士だったからです。

So this allotment was for the rest of the people of Manasseh—the clans of Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher and Shemida. These are the other male descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph by their clans.

それで、ヨルダン川の西側の地は、アビエゼル、ヘレク、アスリエル、シェケム、シェミダ、ヘフェルの各氏族に割り当てられることになりました。

Now Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah.

ところが、ギルアデの孫、マキルのひ孫、マナセから四代目に当たる、ヘフェルの子ツェロフハデには息子がいませんでした。その代わり、マフラ、ノア、ホグラ、ミルカ、ティルツァという五人の娘がいました。

They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the Lord’s command.

娘たちは、祭司エルアザル、ヨシュア、およびイスラエルの指導者たちの前に進み出て、申し立てました。「主がモーセ様におっしゃったことによれば、私どももこの部族の男の方々と同様、土地を相続できるはずです。」

Manasseh’s share consisted of ten tracts of land besides Gilead and Bashan east of the Jordan,

その結果、主がモーセを通して与えた命令どおり、五人の娘は五人の大伯父と並んで相続地を受けました。結局マナセの相続地の全体は、ヨルダン川の東岸のギルアデとバシャンのほかに十の地区となりました。

because the daughters of the tribe of Manasseh received an inheritance among the sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the descendants of Manasseh.

マナセの半部族にはまた、イッサカルとアシェルの領地内の次の町も与えられました。ベテ・シェアン、イブレアム、ドル、エン・ドル、タナク、メギドとその周辺の村々です。

Yet the Manassites were not able to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region.

しかし、マナセの子孫はこれらの町の住民を一掃できなかったので、カナン人が残りました。

However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor but did not drive them out completely.

イスラエル人が勢力を増し、カナン人を奴隷として酷使するようになってからも、彼らを追い出すことはできなかったのです。

The people of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one allotment and one portion for an inheritance? We are a numerous people, and the Lord has blessed us abundantly.”

その後、ヨセフの二部族がヨシュアのもとに来て問いただしました。「主が私たちをこんなにも大所帯にしてくださったのに、なぜ一つの割り当て地しか下さらないのですか。」

“If you are so numerous,” Joshua answered, “and if the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go up into the forest and clear land for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites and Rephaites.”

「もしエフライムの山地が狭いのなら、こうしたらいいだろう。その気があるのなら、ペリジ人やレファイム人が住んでいる森林地帯を切り開くのだ。」

The people of Joseph replied, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the plain have chariots fitted with iron, both those in Beth Shan and its settlements and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”

「あそこならありがたい。何しろ、ベテ・シェアンの回りの低地やイズレエルの谷のような所には、鉄の戦車を備えた、なかなか手強いカナン人がいますから。」

「ではまず、山地の森林地帯を手に入れることだ。あなたたちはこんなに数も多く、力も強い部族だから、きっとあそこを切り開いて住みつけるだろう。それに、いかに相手が手強く、鉄の戦車を持っていようと、谷からカナン人を追い出すことさえ不可能ではない。」

But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—“You are numerous and very powerful. You will have not only one allotment

but the forested hill country as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out.”
