“Who is this that obscures my plans
    with words without knowledge?

「なぜおまえは、わたしの摂理を否定しようとして、
無知をさらけ出すのか。

Brace yourself like a man;
    I will question you,
    and you shall answer me.

さあ、遠慮なく向かって来なさい。
これから幾つかの質問をするから、
答えてみなさい。

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
    Tell me, if you understand.

わたしが地の土台をすえた時、
おまえはどこにいたか。
わかるなら言ってみよ。

Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
    Who stretched a measuring line across it?

おまえは地の寸法がどのようにして決められ、
だれがその調査に当たったかを知っているか。

On what were its footings set,
    or who laid its cornerstone—

その土台を支えるものが何か、
だれが隅の親石をすえたかを知っているか。
その時、明けの明星は声を合わせて歌い、
御使いたちは歓声を上げた。

while the morning stars sang together
    and all the angels^[a] shouted for joy?

“Who shut up the sea behind doors
    when it burst forth from the womb,

海が地の底から吹き出た時、
だれが、その境界線を決めたか。
だれが、雲と暗闇を海の着物とし、

when I made the clouds its garment
    and wrapped it in thick darkness,

when I fixed limits for it
    and set its doors and bars in place,

海岸線で区切って、それをせき止め、

when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther;
    here is where your proud waves halt’?

『ここまでだ。これ以上、来てはいけない。
おまえの高ぶる波はここで止まるのだ』と言ったか。

“Have you ever given orders to the morning,
    or shown the dawn its place,

おまえはただの一度でも、朝に姿を現せと命じ、
暁を東の空から昇らせたことがあるか。

that it might take the earth by the edges
    and shake the wicked out of it?

夜明けの光に、地上をくまなく照らして、
不法な夜の支配にとどめを刺せと命じたことがあるか。

The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;
    its features stand out like those of a garment.

暁を赤く彩り、

The wicked are denied their light,
    and their upraised arm is broken.

悪者の巣を乱し、振り上げられた腕を
とどめたことがあるか。

“Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
    or walked in the recesses of the deep?

おまえは海の源である泉を探り、
深海の底を歩いたことがあるか。

Have the gates of death been shown to you?
    Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?

死の門のありかを突き止めたことがあるか。
地の広さを見きわめたことがあるか。
知っているなら言ってみるがいい。

Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?
    Tell me, if you know all this.

“What is the way to the abode of light?
    And where does darkness reside?

光はどこから来るか。
どうしたらそこへ行き着けるか。
暗闇についてはどうか。それはどこから来るか。

Can you take them to their places?
    Do you know the paths to their dwellings?

その境を見つけ、その源まで行くことができるか。

Surely you know, for you were already born!
    You have lived so many years!

おまえがこれらのものが造られる前に生まれ、
じゅうぶんな経験を積んでいるというのなら、
そんなことは、すべて知っているはずだ。

“Have you entered the storehouses of the snow
    or seen the storehouses of the hail,

おまえは、雪の倉に行ってみたことがあるか。
雹が造られ蓄えられる場所を見たことがあるか。
わたしはそれを、戦いの時に使おうと保管している。

which I reserve for times of trouble,
    for days of war and battle?

What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed,
    or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?

光の分岐点に通じる道はどこにあるか。
東風の故郷はどこか。

Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain,
    and a path for the thunderstorm,

大雨の水路として谷を掘ったのはだれか。
だれがいなずまの道を造り、砂漠に雨を降らせ、
乾ききった不毛の大地に水をじゅうぶん吸わせ、
やわらかい草を生えさせるのか。

to water a land where no one lives,
    an uninhabited desert,

to satisfy a desolate wasteland
    and make it sprout with grass?

Does the rain have a father?
    Who fathers the drops of dew?

雨には父親があるか。露はどこから来るか。

From whose womb comes the ice?
    Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens

氷と霜の母親はだれか。

when the waters become hard as stone,
    when the surface of the deep is frozen?

水は姿を変え、石のように固い氷になるではないか。

“Can you bind the chains^[b] of the Pleiades?
    Can you loosen Orion’s belt?

おまえは星を取り抑え、
オリオン座やスバル座を引き止めることができるか。

Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons^[c]
    or lead out the Bear^[d] with its cubs?

四季の順序を正しく決め、
牡牛座のすべての星を
正しい軌道に導くことができるか。

Do you know the laws of the heavens?
    Can you set up God’s^[e] dominion over the earth?

宇宙の法則に通じ、
天がどのような影響を地に及ぼすかを知っているか。

“Can you raise your voice to the clouds
    and cover yourself with a flood of water?

おまえの叫び声を雲にまで届かせ、
そこから雨を降らすことができるか。

Do you send the lightning bolts on their way?
    Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?

いなずまを呼び寄せ、
意のままに雷を落とすことができるか。

Who gives the ibis wisdom^[f]
    or gives the rooster understanding?^[g]

人に直観や本能を授けたのはだれか。

Who has the wisdom to count the clouds?
    Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens

雲を全部数えられるほど知恵のある者がいるか。
土地が乾ききって固まり、
ほこりだらけになるとき、
だれが天の水がめを傾けることができるか。

when the dust becomes hard
    and the clods of earth stick together?

“Do you hunt the prey for the lioness
    and satisfy the hunger of the lions

子どものライオンがほら穴に伏し、
またジャングルの中に寝そべって食べ物を待つとき、
おまえは母親のライオンのように、
獲物に忍び寄ってしとめることができるか。

when they crouch in their dens
    or lie in wait in a thicket?

Who provides food for the raven
    when its young cry out to God
    and wander about for lack of food?
