Verse 1

Concerning Moab:

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says:

“Woe to Nebo, for it will be ruined.
Kiriathaim will be disgraced and captured;
the stronghold^[a] will be disgraced and shattered.

モアブについて、イスラエルの神である天の軍勢の主は、こう言います。

「ネボの町はひどい目に会い、跡形もなく壊される。
キルヤタイムの町は占領され、
それを守る要塞はつぶされる。

Verse 2

Moab will be praised no more;
    in Heshbon^[b] people will plot her downfall:
    ‘Come, let us put an end to that nation.’
You, the people of Madmen,^[c] will also be silenced;
    the sword will pursue you.

もう、だれもモアブのことを誇りにする者はいない。
そのいのちがつけねらわれているからだ。
すでにヘシュボンでは、
モアブを破壊する手はずが整った。
『さあ、あの国を滅ぼして、地上から抹殺しよう』と、
彼らは言う。
マデメンはひっそり静まり返っている。
一方、ホロナイムには戦いの物音が近づく。
こうしてモアブは全滅し、
その叫び声はツォアルにまで響く。

Verse 3

Cries of anguish arise from Horonaim,
cries of great havoc and destruction.

Moab will be broken;
her little ones will cry out.^[d]

Verse 5

They go up the hill to Luhith,
weeping bitterly as they go;
on the road down to Horonaim
anguished cries over the destruction are heard.

泣きながらルヒテの坂を上る避難民の耳には、
下に見える町からの恐怖の叫びが聞こえる。

Verse 6

Flee! Run for your lives;
become like a bush^[e] in the desert.

いのちが助かるために逃げ、荒野に身をひそめよ。

Verse 7

Since you trust in your deeds and riches,
you too will be taken captive,
and Chemosh will go into exile,
together with his priests and officials.

おまえたちは自分の腕を頼みとし、

富を誇ったので、滅びる。
おまえたちの神ケモシュは、
祭司や重立った人たちと共に、
遠い国へ連れ去られる。

Verse 8

The destroyer will come against every town,
    and not a town will escape.
The valley will be ruined
    and the plateau destroyed,
    because the Lord has spoken.

村や町は、高台にあっても谷間にあっても、
すべて滅びる。
わたしがそう言ったからだ。

Verse 9

Put salt on Moab,
for she will be laid waste^[f];
her towns will become desolate,
with no one to live in them.

モアブに羽が生えてどこかへ飛んで行けたら、
どんなにいいだろう。
この国の町々には、
いのちある者は一人もいなくなるからだ。

Verse 10

“A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
A curse on anyone who keeps their sword from bloodshed!

モアブの血を流すのをいとい、剣を抜くのをひかえる者は、のろわれよ。わたしが与えた仕事に手をつけない者は、のろわれよ。

Verse 11

“Moab has been at rest from youth,
    like wine left on its dregs,
not poured from one jar to another—
    she has not gone into exile.
So she tastes as she did,
    and her aroma is unchanged.

モアブは建国以来、

外敵から守られ平穏無事に過ごしてきた。
この国は、器から器に移し変えられない
ぶどう酒のようで、香りがよく、
口当たりがなめらかだ。
だが今度は、捕虜として外に注ぎ出される番だ。

Verse 12

But days are coming,”
    declares the Lord,
“when I will send men who pour from pitchers,
    and they will pour her out;
they will empty her pitchers
    and smash her jars.

乱暴者が来て、つぼからつぼへ荒々しく移し変え、しかも、そのつぼを粉々に砕く時がすぐにくる。

Verse 13

Then Moab will be ashamed of Chemosh,
as Israel was ashamed
when they trusted in Bethel.

その時になってはじめて、イスラエルがベテルで子牛の偶像を恥じたように、モアブは自分の偶像ケモシュを恥ずかしく思うようになる。」

Verse 14

“How can you say, ‘We are warriors,
men valiant in battle’?

あなたがたは、「われわれは英雄だ。歴戦の勇士だ」とうぬぼれていたころのことを覚えていますか。

Verse 15

Moab will be destroyed and her towns invaded;
her finest young men will go down in the slaughter,”
declares the King, whose name is the Lord Almighty.

しかし今、「モアブは滅ぼされようとしている。

滅ぼす者が近づいている。
えり抜きの若者も殺害される」と、
天の軍勢の主である王が言います。

Verse 16

“The fall of Moab is at hand;
her calamity will come quickly.

大きな災害が足早にモアブに近づいています。

Verse 17

Mourn for her, all who live around her,
all who know her fame;
say, ‘How broken is the mighty scepter,
how broken the glorious staff!’

モアブの友人たちよ、

モアブのために大声で泣きなさい。
力と美しさを誇ったこの国は、粉々に砕かれました。

Verse 18

“Come down from your glory
    and sit on the parched ground,
    you inhabitants of Daughter Dibon,
for the one who destroys Moab
    will come up against you
    and ruin your fortified cities.

ディボンの人たちよ、
栄光の座を降り、ちりの中に座りなさい。
モアブを滅ぼす者はディボンをも荒らし、
すべての塔を倒すからです。

Verse 19

Stand by the road and watch,
you who live in Aroer.
Ask the man fleeing and the woman escaping,
ask them, ‘What has happened?’

アロエルの住民よ、道のそばに立って、
モアブから逃げて来る人たちに、
「いったい何が起こったのですか」と聞いてみなさい。

Verse 20

Moab is disgraced, for she is shattered.
Wail and cry out!
Announce by the Arnon
that Moab is destroyed.

彼らは答えるでしょう。
「モアブは焼け野原になりました。
大声で泣きなさい。
アルノン川の土手で、モアブは滅びたと伝えなさい。」

Verse 21

Judgment has come to the plateau—
to Holon, Jahzah and Mephaath,

平地にあるすべての町は廃墟になりました。神の刑罰は、これらの町全部に下されたのです。ホロンも、ヤハツ、メファアテも、

Verse 22

to Dibon, Nebo and Beth Diblathaim,

ディボン、ネボ、ベテ・ディブラタイムも、

to Kiriathaim, Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,

Verse 24

to Kerioth and Bozrah—
to all the towns of Moab, far and near.

ケリヨテ、ボツラも、モアブの国の遠くや近くにあるすべての町々も、同じ運命に会いました。

Verse 25

Moab’s horn^[g] is cut off;
her arm is broken,”
declares the Lord.

モアブは角を切り取られ、両腕を折られ、

非常に弱くなりました。

Verse 26

“Make her drunk,
for she has defied the Lord.
Let Moab wallow in her vomit;
let her be an object of ridicule.

酔った者のようにふらつき、倒れるままにしておきなさい。主に背いた罰です。モアブは自分の吐いた物の中で転げ回り、すべての人にさげすまれます。

Verse 27

Was not Israel the object of your ridicule?
Was she caught among thieves,
that you shake your head in scorn
whenever you speak of her?

それは、イスラエルをさげすんで強奪し、それが倒れた時、手をたたいて喜んだからです。

Verse 28

Abandon your towns and dwell among the rocks,
you who live in Moab.
Be like a dove that makes its nest
at the mouth of a cave.

モアブの人たちよ、町を捨てて逃げ、

岩の裂け目に巣を作る鳩のように、
ほら穴に住みなさい。

Verse 29

“We have heard of Moab’s pride—
how great is her arrogance!—
of her insolence, her pride, her conceit
and the haughtiness of her heart.

モアブの思い上がりは並はずれたものだったので、
私たちの耳にまで達しました。
その、他人を見下す横柄な態度、思い上がった心を、
私たちは知っています。

Verse 30

I know her insolence but it is futile,”
declares the Lord,
“and her boasts accomplish nothing.

「わたしはモアブの思い上がりを知っている」と、主は言います。しかし、そのうぬぼれは根拠のないもので、から威張りにすぎません。

Verse 31

Therefore I wail over Moab,
for all Moab I cry out,
I moan for the people of Kir Hareseth.

私はモアブのために泣き、私の心は、キル・ヘレスの人々のことを思って痛みます。

Verse 32

I weep for you, as Jazer weeps,
    you vines of Sibmah.
Your branches spread as far as the sea^[h];
    they reached as far as^[i] Jazer.
The destroyer has fallen
    on your ripened fruit and grapes.

ぶどうのお陰で富んでいる

シブマ（良質のぶどうの産地）の人よ。
私はヤゼルの人以上に、あなたがたのために泣きます。
滅ぼす者が来て、よく伸びたあなたがたのつるを切り、
ぶどうと夏の果物を横取りしたからです。
そのため、あなたがたは丸裸になりました。

Verse 33

Joy and gladness are gone
    from the orchards and fields of Moab.
I have stopped the flow of wine from the presses;
    no one treads them with shouts of joy.
Although there are shouts,
    they are not shouts of joy.

実り豊かなモアブから、喜びと楽しみの声が消え、
酒ぶねに入れるぶどうもなく、
喜びの声を上げてぶどうを踏む者もいません。
叫び声は聞こえますが、
歓声ではありません。

Verse 34

“The sound of their cry rises
from Heshbon to Elealeh and Jahaz,
from Zoar as far as Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah,
for even the waters of Nimrim are dried up.

恐怖と苦痛の、身の毛もよだつ叫び声が、ヘシュボンからエルアレとヤハツ、ツォアルからホロナイムとエグラテ・シェリシヤにわたる国中に響きます。ニムリム川沿いの牧草地は、今ではすっかり荒れ地になりました。

Verse 35

In Moab I will put an end
to those who make offerings on the high places
and burn incense to their gods,”
declares the Lord.

「わたしは、モアブが偽の神々を拝み、偶像に香をたくのをやめさせた」と、主は言います。

Verse 36

“So my heart laments for Moab like the music of a pipe;
it laments like a pipe for the people of Kir Hareseth.
The wealth they acquired is gone.

私は、モアブとキル・ヘレスのために嘆き悲しみます。彼らの富が消えうせたからです。

Verse 37

Every head is shaved
and every beard cut off;
every hand is slashed
and every waist is covered with sackcloth.

彼らは苦しみもだえて頭の毛とひげをそり、手に傷をつけ、袋を作る材料の荒布を身にまといます。

Verse 38

On all the roofs in Moab
    and in the public squares
there is nothing but mourning,
    for I have broken Moab
    like a jar that no one wants,”
declares the Lord.

どのモアブ人の家からも、路上からも、泣き悲しむ声が聞こえます。

「わたしがモアブを、だれも見向きもしない古い器のように割ったからだ」と、主は言います。

Verse 39

“How shattered she is! How they wail!
How Moab turns her back in shame!
Moab has become an object of ridicule,
an object of horror to all those around her.”

なぜ壊されたのでしょう。泣き叫ぶ声を聞き、モアブの恥に目を留めなさい。モアブは今、周囲の人たちにとって、恐怖とさげすみのしるしとなっています。

Verse 40

This is what the Lord says:

“Look! An eagle is swooping down,
spreading its wings over Moab.

「モアブの上空を、不吉の使者のわしが輪を描いて飛んでいる」と、主は言います。

Verse 41

Kerioth^[j] will be captured
and the strongholds taken.
In that day the hearts of Moab’s warriors
will be like the heart of a woman in labor.

町々は攻め取られ、要塞はつぶされます。

偉大な勇士も、産みの苦しみをする女のように、
恐れに取りつかれて弱くなります。

Verse 42

Moab will be destroyed as a nation
because she defied the Lord.

モアブは、もはや国ではありません。
主に大きな口をきいたからです。

Verse 43

Terror and pit and snare await you,
you people of Moab,”
declares the Lord.

「モアブよ、恐れと罠と裏切りが、
おまえの分け前になる。

Verse 44

“Whoever flees from the terror
    will fall into a pit,
whoever climbs out of the pit
    will be caught in a snare;
for I will bring on Moab
    the year of her punishment,”
declares the Lord.

逃げる者は落とし穴に落ち、
そこからようやくはい上がったかと思うと、
今度は罠に足をはさまれる。
わたしは、おまえがどんなにもがいても
脱出できないように、目を光らせている。
おまえの刑罰の時がきたのだ」と、主は言います。

Verse 45

“In the shadow of Heshbon
    the fugitives stand helpless,
for a fire has gone out from Heshbon,
    a blaze from the midst of Sihon;
it burns the foreheads of Moab,
    the skulls of the noisy boasters.

彼らは、やっとの思いでヘシュボンまで
逃げのびますが、それ以上は行けません。
シホンの先祖の土地であるヘシュボンから火が出て、
国の端から端までなめ尽くし、
反逆者たちをみな焼き殺します。

Verse 46

Woe to you, Moab!
The people of Chemosh are destroyed;
your sons are taken into exile
and your daughters into captivity.

ああ、モアブよ。
恐ろしい運命があなたを待ち受けています。
ケモシュの神を拝む人々は滅びました。
あなたの息子と娘は、奴隷として連れ去られます。

Verse 47

“Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab
in days to come,”
declares the Lord.

Here ends the judgment on Moab.

「だが、後に、わたしはモアブの国を再建する」と、
主は言います。
モアブについての預言は、これで終わりです。
