Genesis 4

Adam^[a] made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.^[b] She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth^[c] a man.”

そののち、アダムは妻エバと結ばれ、エバはカイン〔「私は得た」の意〕を産みました。この名がついたのは、エバが「主のおかげでこの子を得た」と言ったからです。

Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.

続いてエバは、弟のアベルを産みました。やがて、カインは農夫になり、アベルは羊飼いになりました。

In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord.

収穫の時期になると、カインは作物の中から主に供え物をささげました。

And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,

アベルは一番良い子羊の最上の肉を、自分で神にささげました。主はアベルのささげ物は受け取りましたが、

but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

カインのささげ物は受け取りませんでした。それでカインは怒って顔を伏せてしまいました。

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?

主はそれを見て、「なぜ腹を立てるのだ」とただしました。「何が気に入らなくてうつむいているのか。

If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

やるべきことを正しく行ってさえいれば、受け入れられるのだ。もし正しく行っていないなら、あなたを滅ぼそうと、罪が待ちかまえている。だが、あなたはその力を抑えることができるはずだ。」

Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”^[d] While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

ある日、カインは、「野へ行かないか」と弟アベルをさそいました。そして、野で不意にアベルに襲いかかり、殺してしまったのです。

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”

“I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

そのことがあってから、主はカインに尋ねました。「あなたの弟はどこにいるのか。アベルはどうしたのだ。」

「そんなこと、なぜ私が知っていなければならないのですか。弟の行く先をいつも見張れとでもおっしゃるのですか。」

The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.

「あなたの弟の血が、大地からわたしを呼んでいる。あなたはなんということをしてしまったのか。

Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

弟の血で大地を汚すとは。あなたはもう、ここに住むことはできない。

When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”

これからは、いくら働いても、大地はあなたのために作物を実らせない。この先あなたは放浪者となり、当てもなくさすらうのだ。」

Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear.

カインは言いました。「そのような罰は重すぎて、とても負いきれません。

Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

この地から追い出され、神様の前からも追い払われて、放浪者にまで落ちぶれるなどとは。私を見たら、だれでも私を殺そうとするでしょう。」

But the Lord said to him, “Not so^[e]; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

「心配しなくてよい。あなたを殺させたりはしない。そんなことをする者は、あなたの被るものの七倍の復讐を受けることになる。」こう約束すると神は、彼が殺されないように、カインに一つのしるしを与えました。

So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod,^[f] east of Eden.

こうして、カインは神のもとを去り、エデンの東、ノデの地に住みついたのです。

Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.

そのあと、カインの妻は男の子を産みました。それがエノクです。その時、カインは町を建てていたので、子どもの名にちなんで、町の名もエノクとしました。

To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

エノクはイラデの父。イラデはメフヤエルの父。メフヤエルはメトシャエルの父。メトシャエルはレメクの父。

Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.

レメクにはアダとツィラという二人の妻がいました。

Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.

アダの子ヤバルは、初めて牧畜を行う者となり、テント生活を始めました。

His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes.

弟はユバルといい、最初の芸術家になりました。竪琴と笛を作ったのはこの人です。

Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of^[g] bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.

レメクのもう一人の妻ツィラには、トバル・カインが生まれました。彼は最初の鍛冶屋になって、青銅や鉄の道具を作りました。トバル・カインにはナアマという妹もいました。

Lamech said to his wives,

カインを殺す者が七倍の罰を受けるとしたら、私の場合はそんなものではない。あの若者のかたきを討とうとする者は、七十七倍の罰を受けなければならないのだ。」

Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,^[h] saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”

さて、エバは男の子をもう一人産み、セツ〔「授けられた者」の意〕と名づけました。エバが言うように、「カインに殺された子アベルの代わりに、神様がまた男の子を授けてくださった」のです。

Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.

At that time people began to call on^[i] the name of the Lord.

セツは成人し、息子が生まれると、その子をエノシュと名づけました。このころから人々は、神の名によって祈るようになりました。
