Genesis 37

Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.

ヤコブはまた、カナンの地に住むことになりました。かつて父イサクが住んでいた所です。

This is the account of Jacob’s family line.

Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

この時、息子のヨセフは十七歳になっていました。腹違いの兄である、ビルハやジルパの息子たちといっしょに、父親の羊の群れの番をするのが、ヨセフの仕事でした。そんな時、兄たちが何か悪いことをすると、ヨセフはいちいち父親に知らせるのです。

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate^[a] robe for him.

イスラエルはヨセフを、どの息子よりもかわいがっていました。年をとってからの子だったからです。それで、彼には飾りつきの特別仕立ての服を作ってやりました。

When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

こうあからさまにえこひいきされては、兄たちもおもしろくありません。ヨセフが憎らしくて、優しいことばなどかけられないのです。

Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.

そんなある晩、ヨセフは夢を見ました。その話をさっそく事細かに話したものですから、ますます兄たちに嫌われてしまいました。

He said to them, “Listen to this dream I had:

「聞いてよ。僕、こんな夢を見たんだ。」得意げに、ヨセフは言いました。

We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it.”

「みんなが畑で束をたばねていたんだ。そうしたら僕の束が、いきなりすっくと立ち上がった。それからどうなったと思う？　兄さんたちの束が回りに集まって来て、僕の束におじぎをするんだ。」

His brothers said to him, “Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

「じゃあ何かい、おまえがおれたちの主人になって支配するとでもいうのかい？」兄たちはせせら笑いました。「いつものことだが、なんて生意気なやつだ。だいいち、その夢が気にくわない。」ヨセフがますます憎らしくなるばかりでした。

Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. “Listen,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”

ヨセフはまた夢を見て、兄たちに話しました。「また夢を見たんだけど、太陽と月と十一の星が、僕におじぎしたんだ。」

When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, “What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?”

今度は父親にも話をしました。父親はさすがに彼をしかりつけました。「いったいどういうことなんだ！　母さんと兄さんたちだけでなく、私までが、おまえにおじぎをするというのか。」

His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Joseph Sold by His Brothers

兄たちは彼がねたましくてなりませんでしたが、父親はいったいどういう意味なのかと、あれこれ考えて心に留めておきました。

エジプトに売られるヨセフ

Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem,

ある日のこと、兄たちは羊の群れに草を食べさせるためにシェケムへ出かけました。

and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.”

“Very well,” he replied.

数日後、イスラエルはヨセフを呼び寄せて言いました。「兄さんたちはシェケムで羊に草を食べさせている。ちょっと行って、ちゃんと仕事をしているか、家畜の状態はどうか調べて来てくれないか。わかったら、戻って報告してくれ。」

「わかりました、お父さん。」ヨセフはさっそくヘブロン谷の家を出て、シェケムへ向かいました。

So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.

When Joseph arrived at Shechem,

a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”

ところが、兄たちはなかなか見つかりません。シェケムの野を歩き回っていると、一人の人に呼び止められました。「おまえさん、だれを捜してるのかね。」

He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”

「兄たちと羊の群れです。見かけませんでしたか？」

“They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’”

So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan.

「ああ、あの人たちか。だったら、ここにはもういないよ。確かドタンに行くとか言っていたな。」

ヨセフはドタンまであとを追って行き、ようやく彼らを見つけました。

But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

兄たちも、ヨセフがまだ遠くにいるうちから、いち早く彼の姿を認めました。ヨセフが一人でやって来る、またとないチャンスです。そこで、とんでもない相談を始めました。彼を殺してしまおうというのです。

“Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other.

「あの大ぼらふきが来るぞ。あんなやつ、殺して井戸に投げ込んでしまおう。おやじには獣に食われたとでも言えばいい。例のすばらしい夢がどうなるか見たいものだ。」

“Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”

When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said.

けれども、ルベンはヨセフを助けたかったので、異議を唱えました。「殺すこともないじゃないか。血を流すのはよくないよ。生きたまま井戸に投げ込んでおけばいいんだ。あいつに手を下すのはやめよう。」

こうしておけば、あとで井戸から救い出し、父のもとに帰してやれると考えたのです。

“Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing—

そこへヨセフが来ました。彼らはいきなり弟の派手な飾りつきの上着をはぎ取り、

and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

空っぽの井戸に投げ込みました。

As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.

それから、腰をおろして夕食にしたのですが、ふと気がつくと、遠くから、らくだの一隊がやって来るではありませんか。おそらく樹脂や香料、薬草類をギルアデからエジプトに運ぶ、イシュマエル人の隊商でしょう。

Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?

「おい、見ろよ。」ユダが叫びました。「イシュマエル人が来るぞ。ヨセフのやつを売り飛ばすってのはどうだい。殺すのは、どう考えても気持ちのいいもんじゃない。自分たちの手で殺したりすれば、あとでいやな思いをするだろう。虫の好かないやつだけど、やっぱり弟なんだからな。」みな賛成です。

Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.

So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels^[b] of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

そこで、隊商がそばまで来ると、ヨセフを井戸から引き上げて銀貨二十枚で彼を売りました。ヨセフはエジプトへ連れて行かれるのです。

When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.

〔この時、居合わせなかった〕ルベンは、こんなことになっていようとは夢にも思いません。戻って来ると、ヨセフを井戸から救い出そうとしました。ところが、ヨセフの影も形もありません。どうしたらいいのだろうと、あまりのショックで服を引き裂き（悲しみを表すときの習慣）、悲嘆にくれました。

He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”

「あの子がいなくなってしまった。いったいどこへ捜しに行ったらいいのだ。」ルベンは泣いて訴えました。

Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.

それから、兄弟たちはやぎを殺し、その血をヨセフの着ていた上着に振りかけました。

They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”

そして何くわぬ顔でそれを父親のところへ持って行き、だれのものか調べてほしいと頼んだのです。「お父さん、これを野で見つけました。ヨセフの上着のようですが、違いますか。」

He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”

ひと目見れば、だれのものかはわかります。父親はすすり泣きながら言いました。「ああ、間違いない。ヨセフの上着だよ。あの子は野獣に食われてしまったんだ。ずたずたにかみ裂かれて……。」

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days.

イスラエルは胸がつぶれる思いで服を引き裂き、麻布を着て、何週間もの間、息子の死を嘆き悲しみました。

All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him.

家族が慰めようとしても、耳を貸そうともしません。「あの子は死んでしまった。何もかもおしまいだ。私もこのまま死んでしまいたい」と言って泣きました。

Meanwhile, the Midianites^[c] sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.

一方、エジプトに着いた隊商は、ヨセフをエジプト王に仕える役人ポティファルに売りました。ポティファルは侍従長という立場にある宮廷の役人で、監獄の責任者でした。
