Genesis 35

Then God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.”

神はヤコブに命じました。「ベテルへ行って、そこに住みなさい。祭壇を築くのも忘れないように。兄エサウのもとを逃げ出した時、あそこで会った神を礼拝するのだ。」

So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.

ヤコブは一族の者みなに、手もとにある偶像を捨て、身を洗いきよめて新しい服を着るよう命じました。

Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.”

そして、一同に言い渡しました。「これからベテルへ行く。これまで、どんなに苦しかった時も祈りに答えてくださった神様、旅の間、いつも共にいて守ってくださった神様のために、そこで祭壇を築くことにしたのだ。」

So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.

彼らは、持っていた偶像や耳につけていたイヤリングなどをヤコブに渡したので、彼は全部ひとまとめにして、シェケムのそばの樫の木の下に埋めました。

Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.

彼らが旅立つと、神が行く先々の町の住民に恐れを与えたので、旅の間だれからも攻撃されずにすみました。

Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.

ついにカナンのルズ〔別名ベテル〕に着きました。

There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel,^[a] because it was there that God revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.

ヤコブはそこに祭壇を築き、エル・ベテル（「ベテルでお会いした神の祭壇」の意）と呼びました。エサウのもとから逃げる時、神と会ったのが、このベテルだったからです。

Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak outside Bethel. So it was named Allon Bakuth.^[b]

まもなく、リベカの年老いた乳母デボラが死に、ベテルのふもとの谷にあった樫の木の下に葬られました。その木はのちに、「嘆きの樫の木」と呼ばれるようになりました。

After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,^[c] God appeared to him again and blessed him.

こうして、はるばるパダン・アラムからベテルまで戻ったヤコブに、神は再び現れ、祝福しました。

God said to him, “Your name is Jacob,^[d] but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.^[e]” So he named him Israel.

「あなたの名はこれからヤコブ〔「つかむ者」の意〕ではなく、イスラエル〔「神に勝つ者」の意〕としなさい。

And God said to him, “I am God Almighty^[f]; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.

わたしは全能の神だ。」また、こうも約束されました。「あなたに子どもをたくさん与え、子孫を増やそう。彼らは大きな国となり、たくさんの国が分かれ出る。あなたの子孫から何人もの王が出るのだ。

The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.”

わたしがアブラハムとイサクに与えた土地はみな、あなたとあなたの子孫のものだ。」

Then God went up from him at the place where he had talked with him.

そのあとヤコブは、神が現れた場所に石の柱を立て、神へのささげ物として柱にぶどう酒を注ぎ、オリーブ油を塗りました。

Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it.

Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.^[g]

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac

このことがあってから、ヤコブはそこをベテル〔「神の家」の意〕と名づけました。

ラケルの死

Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty.

やがてベテルを出発したヤコブ（イスラエル）の一行は、エフラテ〔ベツレヘム〕へと旅を続けました。ところが目的地まではまだかなりあるうちに、ラケルが産気づいたのです。

And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her, “Don’t despair, for you have another son.”

ひどい陣痛でラケルは苦しみ、気をもみながら待つうち、ようやく助産婦の大声が聞こえました。

As she breathed her last—for she was dying—she named her son Ben-Oni.^[h] But his father named him Benjamin.^[i]

「よかったわね。また男のお子さんですよ。」難産で息も絶え絶えのラケルは、最後の息の下から、その子をベン・オニ〔「私の悲しみの子」の意〕と呼びました。しかし父親は、ベニヤミン〔「私の右手の子」の意〕と名づけました。

So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

ラケルは死に、エフラテへ向かう道のそばに葬られました。

Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day that pillar marks Rachel’s tomb.

その墓石は、今も残っています。

ヤコブの息子たち

Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.

イスラエルは旅を続け、エデルの塔を越えた所にテントを張りました。

While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard of it.

Jacob had twelve sons:

レアの召使ジルパの子は、ガド、アシェル。

みなパダン・アラムで生まれた息子です。

イサクの死

Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre, near Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.

こうしてヤコブは、今はヘブロンと呼ばれるキルヤテ・アルバのマムレにいた父親イサクのところへ帰りました。そこはアブラハムも住んだことのある所です。

Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years.

その後まもなく、イサクは天寿を全うして百八十歳で死にました。彼の子エサウとヤコブが二人で父を葬りました。

Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
