Genesis 30

When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”

一方、ラケルは自分が子どもを産んでいないので、姉に嫉妬するようになりました。そしてとうとう、「何とかしてください。私も子どもが欲しいのです。でないと、死んでしまいそうです」とヤコブに言いました。

Jacob became angry with her and said, “Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?”

ヤコブは腹を立てて言いました。「何だって？　私は神様ではない。おまえに子どもが与えられないのは、神様がそうしておられるからだろう。」

Then she said, “Here is Bilhah, my servant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her.”

「そう、では召使のビルハと寝てください。あの子にあなたの子どもができたら、私の子どもにするから。」

So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her,

こうして、ヤコブはビルハをそばめとしました。

and she became pregnant and bore him a son.

やがてビルハは男の子を産みました。

Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; he has listened to my plea and given me a son.” Because of this she named him Dan.^[a]

ラケルは、「神様は正義を行ってくださった。願いどおり息子を下さったのだから」と言って、その子をダン〔「正義」の意〕と名づけました。

Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.

ラケルの女奴隷ビルハは、二人目の男の子を産みました。

Then Rachel said, “I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.” So she named him Naphtali.^[b]

ラケルは、「死に物狂いの争いだったけど、とうとう姉さんに勝った」と言って、その子をナフタリ〔「争い」の意〕と名づけました。

When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

一方レアは、もう子どもが産めなくなったので、召使のジルパをヤコブのそばめにしました。

Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.

やがて、ジルパは男の子を産み、レアはその子をガド〔「運が開ける」の意〕と名づけました。

Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”^[c] So she named him Gad.^[d]

Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.

ジルパはまた男の子を産んだので、

Then Leah said, “How happy I am! The women will call me happy.” So she named him Asher.^[e]

レアは、「私は幸せ者だわ。ほかの女たちもきっとそう思うでしょう」と言って、その子にアシェル〔「幸福」の意〕という名をつけました。

During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants, which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

さて、麦の刈り入れが始まったある日のこと、長男ルベンが野で恋なすび〔果実に強い麻酔性のある薬用植物で、食べると身ごもると信じられていた〕を見つけ、母レアのところに持って来ました。ラケルは黙っていられず、レアに、自分にも少し分けてくれるよう頼みました。

But she said to her, “Wasn’t it enough that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”

“Very well,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”

レアは腹を立てて言いました。「夫を取っただけではまだ不足なの？　私の息子が見つけて来た恋なすびまで取り上げるなんて、あんまりじゃない。」

ラケルは答えました。「だったら、こうしましょうよ。恋なすびをくれれば、今夜は姉さんがあの人と寝てもいいわ。」

So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he slept with her that night.

夕方、畑から戻ったヤコブをレアが出迎えました。「今夜は私のところへ来てくださいね。ルベンが見つけた恋なすびをラケルにあげた交換条件ですから。」彼はそうしました。

God listened to Leah, and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son.

神はレアの祈りに答え、彼女に五人目の男の子を授けてくださいました。

Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.^[f]

彼女は、「夫に私の女奴隷を与えたので、神様が報いてくださった」と喜んで、その子の名をイッサカル〔「報酬」の意〕としました。

Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son.

その後またレアに、六人目の男の子が生まれました。

Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor, because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.^[g]

彼女は、「神様は、夫が一番喜ぶ贈り物を下さった。六人も男の子を産んだのだから、今度こそ、あの人も私を大切にしてくれるでしょう」と言って、ゼブルン〔「贈り物」の意〕と名づけました。

Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.

そのあと、今度は女の子が生まれ、ディナと名づけられました。

Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and enabled her to conceive.

神はラケルを忘れてはいませんでした。ラケルの苦しみを見て、祈りに答え、男の子をお与えになりました。

She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.”

男の子が生まれた時、彼女は、「神様は私の恥を取り除いてくださった」と言って、ヨセフ〔「もう一人、子どもが授かるように」の意〕と名づけました。「男の子をもう一人授けてください」と願ったからです。

ヤコブとラバンの抗争

She named him Joseph,^[h] and said, “May the Lord add to me another son.”

Jacob’s Flocks Increase

After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland.

ヨセフが生まれてしばらくたって、ヤコブは突然、ラバンに言いました。「そろそろ国へ帰りたいと考えています。

Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you, and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.”

もちろん妻と子どもたちもいっしょです。それだけのことはしてきたつもりです。こんなに長い間、あなたのために身を粉にして働いたことは、よくご存じでしょう。」

But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you.”

「そんなことを言わず、ここにいてくれないか。実は、占い師に見てもらったのだ。そうしたら、私がこんなに恵まれてるのは、全部おまえのおかげだというではないか。

He added, “Name your wages, and I will pay them.”

報酬が不足なら、上げてやってもいい。ここにいてくれるなら、おまえの望む額を喜んで出そうじゃないか。」

Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care.

「知ってのとおり、私は長年あなたのために忠実に働きました。それで、あなたの家畜がこんなに増えたのです。

The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been. But now, when may I do something for my own household?”

私が来たばかりの時は、財産といってもほんの少ししかなかったのに、今はかなりのものです。それというのも、神様が、私のすることは何でも祝福してくださったからです。それなのに、当の私はどうでしょう。いつになれば自分の財産が持てるのですか。」

“What shall I give you?” he asked.

“Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them:

「で？　何が欲しいのだ。」

「条件は一つだけです。それさえのんでもらえれば、また喜んで働きます。今日、私はお義父さんの群れの番をしますが、まだらやぶちのあるやぎと、黒い毛の羊は、すべて別にしますから、それを私に下さい。

Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat. They will be my wages.

And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored, will be considered stolen.”

あとで、もし私の群れの中に白いやぎや羊が一匹でもいれば、私があなたのものを盗んだことになる、というわけです。」

“Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.”

「いいだろう。おまえの言うとおりにしよう。」

That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs, and he placed them in the care of his sons.

さっそく、ラバンは外に出て、ヤコブのために家畜の群れを分けました。雄でも雌でも、ぶちやしまのあるやぎ、つまり黒の中に少しでも白い部分のあるやぎと、黒い羊ばかりの群れができました。それがヤコブのものです。ラバンは自分の息子たちにその群れをゆだね、歩いて三日ほどかかる場所へ連れて行かせました。ヤコブは、ラバンの残りの群れの世話をしました。

Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks.

Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches.

彼はまず、ポプラ、アーモンド、プラタナスの若枝を切り、皮をむいて白い木肌を出しました。

Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink,

それを、群れが水を飲みに来たとき自然に見えるように、水飲み場のそばに置きました。家畜は水を飲みに来たとき交尾するので、

they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.

そうしておくと、やぎは白いしまのある枝を見ながら交尾することになり、その結果、ぶちやしまのある子が生まれるというのです（そのように信じられていた）。それはみな、ヤコブのものになりました。次に、ラバンの群れから雌羊を取り出し、自分の黒い雄羊とだけ交尾させるようにしました。ヤコブの群れは増える一方です。

Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals.

Whenever the stronger females were in heat, Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches,

そればかりではありません。彼は、力の強そうなのが交尾している時は、皮をむいた枝をそばに置き、

but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob.

弱そうなのが来た時は、置かないようにしたのです。それで、あまり丈夫でない子羊はラバンのものとなり、丈夫なのはヤコブのものとなりました。

In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.

当然、ヤコブの群れはどんどん増え、らくだやろばも増えました。彼は召使も大ぜいかかえ、たいへんな資産家となりました。
