Ephesians 3

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—

私パウロは、今、キリスト・イエスの囚人となって投獄されています。それは、あなたがた外国人も、ユダヤ人と同じように神の家族の一員だと語ったからです。

Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you,

私は、外国人に神の恵みを示すという任務を神から受けています。このことについては、前の手紙でも簡単にふれましたから、もうすでにご存じと思います。外国人もまた神の恵みの対象とされているという、この特別の計画を、神が私に明かしてくださったのです。

that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly.

In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,

このように申し上げるのは、これらについて私がどう理解しているかをわかっていただくためです。

which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.

以前、神はこの計画をご自分の民に隠しておられました。しかし今は、聖霊を通して、使徒や預言者たちにはっきりと示しておられます。

This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

その特別の計画とは、神の子どもとされた者たちが、外国人もユダヤ人と共に、すべての救いの恩恵を受け継ぐということです。ユダヤ人も外国人も、共に神の教会の一員として招かれています。そして、キリストについての福音と、この方がなされたこととを受け入れる時、キリストによって大いに祝福するという神の約束に、両者ともあずかるのです。

I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power.

神は、そのことをすべての人に伝える光栄ある特権を私に与えてくださいました。また、その務めを果たすに十分な、神の力と賜物をも与えてくださったのです。

Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ,

私はそのような資格の全くない者で、クリスチャンの中で最も役立たずの人間です。それにもかかわらず、キリストのうちにある無限の富が外国人にも与えられるという計画を伝える者として、こんな私が選ばれたのです。

and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.

それは、万物を造られた神が、世の初めからの計画どおりに、ご自分が外国人の救い主でもあることを、すべての人に説き明かすためでした。

His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,

またそれは、天のもろもろの支配者たちに対して、神の全家族――ユダヤ人も外国人も――が教会の中で一つとなっている姿を見せ、神の完全な知恵を示すためです。

according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

これこそ、神が主キリスト・イエスを通して、かねてから計画しておられたことなのです。

In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.

私たちはこのキリストと共にあり、キリストを信じる信仰によって、確信をもって大胆に神の前に出ることができます。

I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

A Prayer for the Ephesians

ですから、どうか、私がいま体験している苦しみを知って落胆しないでください。この苦しみはあなたがたのためであり、それは、あなたがたにとって名誉となり、励ましとなるはずです。

For this reason I kneel before the Father,

神のご計画の深さと広さを思う時、私はひざをかがめて、天上と地上の家族の父である方に祈ります。

from whom every family^[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,

どうか、父なる神が、その栄光に満ちた無限の富の中から、御霊を通して人を内面から強くする力を、あなたがたに与えてくださいますように。

so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,

こうしてキリストが、信じるあなたがたの心に住んでくださいますように。

may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,

そして、神の愛がどれほど広く、どれほど高く、どれほど深いかを理解することができますように。さらに、あなたがたがキリストの無限の愛を知って、キリストの愛といのちに満たされますように。

and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

どうか、私たちの祈り、願い、考え、望みをはるかに超えたすばらしいことを、その偉大な力でなされる神に、栄光がありますように。

to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

どうか、キリスト・イエスによって、教会に救いの計画をもたらしてくださった神に、栄光が永遠にありますように。アーメン。
