Genesis 14

At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,^[a] Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goyim,

Im Land Kanaan brach Krieg aus: Amrafel, König von Schinar, Arjoch, König von Ellasar, Kedor-Laomer, König von Elam, und Tidal, König von Gojim,

these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).

kämpften gegen Bera, König von Sodom, Birscha, König von Gomorra, Schinab, König von Adma, Schemeber, König von Zebojim, und gegen den König von Bela, das später Zoar hieß.

All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Dead Sea Valley).

Diese zuletzt genannten fünf Stadtkönige hatten sich verbündet und zogen mit ihren Truppen zum Siddim-Tal, wo sich heute das Tote Meer erstreckt.

For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

Zwölf Jahre lang hatte Kedor-Laomer die Oberherrschaft über sie ausgeübt, aber im dreizehnten Jahr lehnten sie sich gegen ihn auf.

In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim

Jetzt, ein Jahr später, marschierten Kedor-Laomer und seine Verbündeten auf, und der Krieg begann. Zuerst schlugen sie folgende Volksstämme: die Refaïter bei Aschterot-Karnajim, die Susiter bei Ham, die Emiter in der Ebene von Kirjatajim

and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, as far as El Paran near the desert.

und die Horiter im Gebirge Seïr bis nach El-Paran am Rand der Wüste.

Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who were living in Hazezon Tamar.

Danach kehrten sie zurück nach En-Mischpat, dem späteren Kadesch. Sie verwüsteten das ganze Gebiet der Amalekiter und auch die Gegend um Hazezon-Tamar, die von den Amoritern bewohnt wurde.

Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim

Doch dann stellten sich ihnen im Siddim-Tal die Heere der abtrünnigen Könige entgegen: der Könige von Sodom, von Gomorra, von Adma, von Zebojim und von Bela, dem späteren Zoar.

against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five.

Diese kämpften nun gegen Kedor-Laomer und seine Verbündeten; den vier Großkönigen standen also die Könige von fünf kleinen Städten gegenüber.

Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills.

Das Tal war voller Asphaltgruben. Als die Könige von Sodom und Gomorra in die Flucht geschlagen wurden, stürzten sie hinein, die anderen entkamen ins Gebirge.

The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away.

Die Sieger plünderten Sodom und Gomorra, sie raubten wertvolle Gegenstände und die Lebensmittelvorräte.

They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

Auch Lot, den Neffen Abrams, der in Sodom wohnte, verschleppten sie, dazu seinen gesamten Besitz.

A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre the Amorite, a brother^[b] of Eshkol and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram.

Ein Flüchtling aber konnte sich zu Abram, dem Hebräer, durchschlagen, der zu der Zeit bei den Eichen des Amoriters Mamre wohnte. Mamre und seine Brüder Eschkol und Aner waren mit Abram verbündet.

When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

Als Abram erfuhr, dass sein Neffe verschleppt worden war, bewaffnete er alle kampferprobten Leute, die in seinem Lager geboren waren – 318 Männer –, und jagte den vier Königen hinterher. Bei Dan im Norden holte er sie ein,

During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.

teilte seine Leute in zwei Gruppen auf und überfiel die Feinde bei Nacht. Er schlug sie in die Flucht und verfolgte sie bis nach Hoba, nördlich von Damaskus.

He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.

Das Erbeutete nahm er ihnen wieder ab, darunter auch das Hab und Gut seines Neffen. Lot selbst, die Frauen und alle anderen Gefangenen konnte er befreien.

Begegnung mit dem König von Salem

After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

Als Abram von seiner siegreichen Schlacht gegen Kedor-Laomer und dessen Verbündete zurückkehrte, zog ihm der König von Sodom ins Schawetal entgegen, das jetzt Königstal genannt wird.

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High,

Ebenso kam Melchisedek, der König von Salem^[a], dorthin und brachte Brot und Wein mit. Er war Priester des höchsten Gottes.

and he blessed Abram, saying,

Gepriesen sei der höchste Gott, denn er ließ dich über deine Feinde triumphieren.« Da gab Abram Melchisedek den zehnten Teil von allen Gütern, die er den Königen abgenommen hatte.

The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.”

Der König von Sodom bat Abram: »Gib mir nur meine Leute zurück – alles andere kannst du behalten!«

But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,

Abram entgegnete ihm: »Ich schwöre bei dem Herrn, dem höchsten Gott, der Himmel und Erde geschaffen hat:

that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’

Nicht einmal einen Faden oder Schuhriemen behalte ich von dem, was dir gehört! Du sollst niemals sagen können: ›Ich habe Abram reich gemacht!‹

I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. Let them have their share.”

Nur was meine Männer verzehrt haben, gebe ich dir nicht zurück. Außerdem sollen meine Verbündeten Aner, Eschkol und Mamre ihren Beuteanteil bekommen. Ich aber will nichts davon!«
