Verse 1

Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.

Las puertas de Jericó estaban bien aseguradas por temor a los israelitas; nadie podía salir o entrar.

Verse 2

Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men.

Pero el Señor le dijo a Josué: «¡He entregado en tus manos a Jericó, y a su rey con sus guerreros!

Verse 3

March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days.

Tú y tus soldados marcharéis una vez alrededor de la ciudad; así lo haréis durante seis días.

Verse 4

Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.

Siete sacerdotes llevarán trompetas hechas de cuernos de carneros, y marcharán frente al arca. El séptimo día marcharéis siete veces alrededor de la ciudad, mientras los sacerdotes tocan las trompetas.

Verse 5

When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”

Cuando todos escuchéis el toque de guerra, el pueblo deberá gritar a gran voz. Entonces los muros de la ciudad se derrumbarán, y cada uno entrará sin impedimento».

Verse 6

So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.”

Josué hijo de Nun llamó a los sacerdotes y les ordenó: «Cargad el arca del pacto del Señor, y que siete de vosotros lleven trompetas y marchen frente a ella».

Verse 7

And he ordered the army, “Advance! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark of the Lord.”

Y le dijo al pueblo: «¡Adelante! ¡Marchad alrededor de la ciudad! Pero los hombres armados deben marchar delante del arca del Señor».

Verse 8

When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them.

Cuando Josué terminó de dar las instrucciones al pueblo, los siete sacerdotes marcharon delante del arca del pacto del Señor tocando sus trompetas; y el arca del pacto les seguía.

Verse 9

The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding.

Los hombres armados marchaban delante de los sacerdotes que tocaban las trompetas, y tras el arca marchaba la retaguardia. Durante todo ese tiempo las trompetas no cesaron de sonar.

Verse 10

But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!”

Al resto del pueblo, en cambio, Josué le ordenó marchar en silencio, sin decir palabra alguna ni gritar hasta el día en que les diera la orden de gritar a gran voz.

Verse 11

So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.

Josué hizo llevar el arca alrededor de Jericó una sola vez. Después, el pueblo regresó al campamento para pasar la noche.

Verse 12

Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord.

Al día siguiente, Josué se levantó temprano, y los sacerdotes cargaron el arca del Señor.

Verse 13

The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding.

Los siete sacerdotes que llevaban las trompetas tomaron la delantera y marcharon delante del arca mientras tocaban sus trompetas. Los hombres armados marchaban delante de ellos, y tras el arca del Señor marchaba la retaguardia. ¡Nunca dejaron de oírse las trompetas!

Verse 14

So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.

También en este segundo día marcharon una sola vez alrededor de Jericó, y luego regresaron al campamento. Así hicieron durante seis días.

Verse 15

On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times.

El séptimo día, a la salida del sol, se levantaron y marcharon alrededor de la ciudad tal como lo habían hecho los días anteriores, solo que en ese día repitieron la marcha siete veces.

Verse 16

The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!

A la séptima vuelta, los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas, y Josué le ordenó al ejército: «¡Empezad a gritar! ¡El Señor os ha entregado la ciudad!

Verse 17

The city and all that is in it are to be devoted^[a] to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent.

Jericó, con todo lo que hay en ella, será destinada al exterminio como ofrenda al Señor. Solo se salvarán la prostituta Rajab y los que se encuentren en su casa, porque ella escondió a nuestros mensajeros.

Verse 18

But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it.

No vayáis a tomar nada de lo que ha sido destinado al exterminio para que ni vosotros ni el campamento de Israel os pongáis en peligro de exterminio y de desgracia.

Verse 19

All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”

El oro y la plata y los utensilios de bronce y de hierro pertenecen al Señor: colocadlos en su tesoro».

Verse 20

When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.

Entonces los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas, y la gente gritó a gran voz, ante lo cual las murallas de Jericó se derrumbaron. El pueblo avanzó, sin ceder ni un centímetro, y tomó la ciudad.

Verse 21

They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.

Mataron a filo de espada a todo hombre y mujer, joven y anciano. Lo mismo hicieron con las vacas, las ovejas y los asnos; destruyeron todo lo que tuviera aliento de vida. ¡La ciudad entera quedó arrasada!

Verse 22

Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.”

Ahora bien, Josué les había dicho a los dos exploradores: «Id a casa de la prostituta, y traedla junto con sus parientes, tal como se lo jurasteis».

Verse 23

So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.

Así que los jóvenes exploradores entraron y sacaron a Rajab junto con sus padres y hermanos, y todas sus pertenencias, y llevaron a toda la familia a un lugar seguro, fuera del campamento israelita.

Verse 24

Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord’s house.

Solo entonces los israelitas incendiaron la ciudad con todo lo que había en ella, menos los objetos de plata, de oro, de bronce y de hierro, los cuales depositaron en el tesoro de la casa del Señor.

Verse 25

But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.

Así Josué salvó a la prostituta Rajab, a toda su familia y todas sus posesiones, por haber escondido a los mensajeros que él había enviado a Jericó. Y, desde entonces, Rajab y su familia viven con el pueblo de Israel.

Verse 26

At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath: “Cursed before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:

“At the cost of his firstborn son
he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
he will set up its gates.”

En aquel tiempo, Josué hizo este juramento:

«¡Maldito sea en la presencia del Señor
    el que se atreva a reconstruir esta ciudad!
Que eche los cimientos
    a costa de la vida de su hijo mayor.
Que ponga las puertas
    a costa de la vida de su hijo menor».

Verse 27

So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

El Señor estuvo con Josué, y este se hizo famoso por todo el país.
