2 Kings 4

The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”

La viuda de un miembro de la comunidad de los profetas le suplicó a Eliseo:

―Mi esposo, tu siervo, ha muerto, y tú sabes que él era fiel^[a] al Señor. Ahora resulta que el hombre con quien estamos endeudados ha venido para llevarse a mis dos hijos como esclavos.

Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”

“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”

―¿Y qué puedo hacer por ti? —le preguntó Eliseo—. Dime, ¿qué tienes en casa?

―Tu sierva no tiene nada en casa —le respondió—, excepto un poco de aceite.

Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few.

Eliseo le ordenó:

―Sal y pide a tus vecinos que te presten sus vasijas; consigue todas las que puedas.

Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”

Luego entra en la casa con tus hijos y cierra la puerta. Echa aceite en todas las vasijas y, a medida que las llenes, ponlas aparte.

She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring.

En seguida la mujer dejó a Eliseo y se fue. Luego se encerró con sus hijos y empezó a llenar las vasijas que ellos le pasaban.

When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.”

But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

Cuando ya todas estuvieron llenas, ella le pidió a uno de sus hijos que le pasara otra más, y él respondió: «Ya no hay». En ese momento se acabó el aceite.

She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

The Shunammite’s Son Restored to Life

La mujer fue y se lo contó al hombre de Dios, quien le mandó: «Ahora ve a vender el aceite, y paga tus deudas. Con el dinero que te sobre, podréis vivir tú y tus hijos».

El hijo de la sunamita

One day Elisha went to Shunem. And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat.

Un día, cuando Eliseo pasaba por Sunén, cierta mujer de buena posición le insistió que comiera en su casa. Desde entonces, siempre que pasaba por ese pueblo, comía allí.

She said to her husband, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God.

La mujer le dijo a su esposo: «Mira, yo estoy segura de que este hombre que siempre nos visita es un santo hombre de Dios.

Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.”

Hagámosle un cuarto en la azotea, y pongámosle allí una cama, una mesa con una silla, y una lámpara. De ese modo, cuando nos visite, tendrá un lugar donde quedarse».

One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there.

En cierta ocasión Eliseo llegó, fue a su cuarto y se acostó.

He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.” So he called her, and she stood before him.

Luego le dijo a su criado Guiezi:

―Llama a la señora.^[b]

El criado así lo hizo, y ella se presentó.

Elisha said to him, “Tell her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?’”

She replied, “I have a home among my own people.”

Entonces Eliseo le dijo a Guiezi:

―Dile a la señora: “¡Te has tomado muchas molestias por nosotros! ¿Qué puedo hacer por ti? ¿Quieres que le hable al rey o al jefe del ejército en tu favor?”

Pero ella le respondió:

―Yo vivo segura en medio de mi pueblo.

“What can be done for her?” Elisha asked.

Gehazi said, “She has no son, and her husband is old.”

Eliseo le preguntó a Guiezi:

―¿Qué puedo hacer por ella?

―Bueno —contestó el siervo— ella no tiene hijos, y su esposo ya es anciano.

Then Elisha said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood in the doorway.

―Llámala —ordenó Eliseo.

Guiezi la llamó, y ella se detuvo en la puerta.

“About this time next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms.”

“No, my lord!” she objected. “Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!”

Entonces Eliseo le prometió:

―El año que viene, por esta fecha, estarás abrazando un hijo.

―¡No, mi señor, hombre de Dios! —exclamó ella—. No engañes a tu sierva.

But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.

En efecto, la mujer quedó embarazada. Y al año siguiente, por esa misma fecha, dio a luz un hijo, tal como Eliseo se lo había dicho.

The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers.

El niño creció, y un día salió a ver a su padre, que estaba con los segadores.

He said to his father, “My head! My head!”

His father told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.”

De pronto exclamó:

―¡Ay, mi cabeza! ¡Me duele la cabeza!

El padre le ordenó a un criado:

―¡Llévaselo a su madre!

After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died.

El criado lo cargó y se lo llevó a la madre, la cual lo tuvo en sus rodillas hasta el mediodía. A esa hora, el niño murió.

She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.

Entonces ella subió, lo puso en la cama del hombre de Dios y, cerrando la puerta, salió.

She called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.”

Después llamó a su esposo y le dijo:

―Préstame un criado y una burra; en seguida vuelvo. Voy de prisa a ver al hombre de Dios.

“Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon or the Sabbath.”

“That’s all right,” she said.

―¿Para qué vas a verle hoy? —le preguntó su esposo—. No es día de luna nueva ni sábado.

―No importa —respondió ella.

She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.”

Entonces hizo aparejar la burra y le ordenó al criado:

―¡Anda, vamos! No te detengas hasta que te lo diga.

So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel.

When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite!

La mujer se puso en marcha y llegó al monte Carmelo, donde estaba Eliseo, el hombre de Dios. Este la vio a lo lejos y le dijo a su criado Guiezi:

―¡Mira! Ahí viene la sunamita.

Run to meet her and ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’”

“Everything is all right,” she said.

Corre a recibirla y pregúntale cómo está ella, y cómo están su esposo y el niño.

El criado fue, y ella respondió que todos estaban bien.

When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why.”

Pero luego fue a la montaña y se abrazó a los pies del hombre de Dios. Guiezi se acercó con el propósito de apartarla, pero el hombre de Dios intervino:

―¡Déjala! Está muy angustiada, y el Señor me ha ocultado lo que pasa; no me ha dicho nada.

“Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”

―Señor mío —le dijo la mujer—, ¿acaso yo te pedí un hijo? ¿No te rogué que no me engañaras?

Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”

Eliseo le ordenó a Guiezi:

―Arréglate la ropa, toma mi bastón y ponte en camino. Si te encuentras con alguien, no lo saludes; si alguien te saluda, no le respondas. Y, cuando llegues, coloca el bastón sobre la cara del niño.

But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.

Pero la madre del niño exclamó:

―¡Te juro que no te dejaré solo! ¡Tan cierto como que el Señor y tú estáis vivos!

Así que Eliseo se levantó y fue con ella.

Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”

Guiezi, que se había adelantado, llegó y colocó el bastón sobre la cara del niño, pero este no respondió ni dio ninguna señal de vida. Por tanto, Guiezi volvió para encontrarse con Eliseo y le dijo:

―El niño no despierta.

When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch.

Cuando Eliseo llegó a la casa, encontró al niño muerto, tendido sobre su cama.

He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the Lord.

Entró al cuarto, cerró la puerta y oró al Señor.

Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm.

Luego subió a la cama y se tendió sobre el niño su boca sobre la boca del niño, sus ojos sobre los del niño y sus manos sobre las del niño, hasta que el cuerpo del niño empezó a entrar en calor.

Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.

Eliseo se levantó y se puso a caminar de un lado a otro del cuarto, y luego volvió a tenderse sobre el niño. Esto lo hizo siete veces, al cabo de las cuales el niño estornudó y abrió los ojos.^[c]

Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” And he did. When she came, he said, “Take your son.”

Entonces Eliseo le dijo a Guiezi:

―Llama a la señora.

Guiezi así lo hizo y, cuando la mujer llegó, Eliseo le dijo:

―Puedes llevarte a tu hijo.

She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.

Death in the Pot

Ella entró, se arrojó a los pies de Eliseo y se postró rostro en tierra. Entonces tomó a su hijo y salió.

El milagro de la comida

Elisha returned to Gilgal and there was a famine in that region. While the company of the prophets was meeting with him, he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot and cook some stew for these prophets.”

Eliseo regresó a Guilgal y se encontró con que en esos días había mucha hambre en el país. Por tanto, se reunió con la comunidad de profetas y le ordenó a su criado: «Pon esa olla grande en el fogón y prepara un guisado para los profetas».

One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine and picked as many of its gourds as his garment could hold. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were.

En eso, uno de ellos salió al campo para recoger hierbas; allí encontró una planta silvestre y arrancó varias frutas hasta llenar su manto. Al regresar, las cortó en pedazos y las echó en el guisado sin saber qué eran.

The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.

Sirvieron el guisado, pero, cuando los hombres empezaron a comerlo, gritaron:

―¡Hombre de Dios, esto es veneno!^[d]

Así que no pudieron comer.

Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He put it into the pot and said, “Serve it to the people to eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.

Feeding of a Hundred

Entonces Eliseo ordenó:

―Traedme harina.

Y, después de echar la harina en la olla, dijo:

―Servid a la gente para que coma.

Y ya no hubo nada en la olla que les hiciera daño.

Alimentación de cien hombres

A man came from Baal Shalishah, bringing the man of God twenty loaves of barley bread baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” Elisha said.

De Baal Salisá llegó alguien que le llevaba al hombre de Dios pan de los primeros frutos: veinte panes de cebada y espigas de trigo fresco.^[e] Eliseo le dijo a su criado:

―Dale de comer a la gente.

“How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked.

But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’”

―¿Cómo voy a alimentar a cien personas con esto? —replicó el criado.

Pero Eliseo insistió:

―Dale de comer a la gente, pues así dice el Señor: “Comerán y habrá de sobra”.

Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.

Entonces el criado les sirvió el pan y, conforme a la palabra del Señor, la gente comió y hubo de sobra.
