1 Kings 11

King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites.

Ahora bien, además de casarse con la hija del faraón, el rey Salomón tuvo amoríos con muchas mujeres moabitas, amonitas, edomitas, sidonias e hititas, todas ellas mujeres extranjeras

They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.

que procedían de naciones de las cuales el Señor había dicho a los israelitas: «No os unáis a ellas, ni ellas a vosotros, porque ciertamente desviarán vuestro corazón para que sigáis a otros dioses». Con tales mujeres se unió Salomón y tuvo amoríos.

He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray.

Tuvo setecientas esposas que eran princesas, y trescientas concubinas; todas estas mujeres hicieron que se pervirtiera su corazón.

As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been.

En efecto, cuando Salomón llegó a viejo, sus mujeres le pervirtieron el corazón de modo que él siguió a otros dioses, y no siempre fue fiel al Señor su Dios como lo había sido su padre^[a] David.

He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites.

Por el contrario, Salomón siguió a Astarté, diosa de los sidonios, y a Moloc,^[b] el detestable dios de los amonitas.

So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done.

Así que Salomón hizo lo que ofende al Señor y no permaneció fiel a él como su padre David.

On a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites.

Fue en esa época cuando, en una montaña al este de Jerusalén, Salomón edificó un altar pagano para Quemós, el detestable dios de Moab, y otro para Moloc, el despreciable dios de los amonitas.

He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.

Lo mismo hizo en favor de sus mujeres extranjeras, para que estas pudieran quemar incienso y ofrecer sacrificios a sus dioses.

The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.

Entonces el Señor, Dios de Israel, se enojó con Salomón porque su corazón se había apartado de él, a pesar de que en dos ocasiones se le había aparecido

Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the Lord’s command.

y le había prohibido que siguiera a otros dioses. Como Salomón no había cumplido esa orden,

So the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.

el Señor le dijo: «Ya que procedes de este modo, y no has cumplido con mi pacto ni con los decretos que te he ordenado, puedes estar seguro de que te quitaré el reino y se lo daré a uno de tus siervos.

Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son.

No obstante, por consideración a tu padre David no lo haré mientras tú vivas, sino que lo arrancaré de la mano de tu hijo.

Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”

Solomon’s Adversaries

Y a este, también por consideración a mi siervo David y a Jerusalén, no le quitaré todo el reino, sino que le dejaré una sola tribu, la cual ya he escogido».

Then the Lord raised up against Solomon an adversary, Hadad the Edomite, from the royal line of Edom.

Por lo tanto, el Señor hizo que Hadad el edomita, que pertenecía a la familia real de Edom, surgiera como adversario de Salomón.

Earlier when David was fighting with Edom, Joab the commander of the army, who had gone up to bury the dead, had struck down all the men in Edom.

Ahora bien, durante la guerra entre David y los edomitas, Joab, el general del ejército, había ido a enterrar a los muertos de Israel y había aprovechado la ocasión para matar a todos los hombres de Edom.

Joab and all the Israelites stayed there for six months, until they had destroyed all the men in Edom.

Joab y los israelitas que estaban con él se quedaron allí seis meses, hasta que exterminaron a todos los varones edomitas.

But Hadad, still only a boy, fled to Egypt with some Edomite officials who had served his father.

Pero Hadad, que entonces era apenas un muchacho, huyó a Egipto con algunos oficiales edomitas que habían estado al servicio de su padre.

They set out from Midian and went to Paran. Then taking people from Paran with them, they went to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave Hadad a house and land and provided him with food.

Partieron de Madián y llegaron a Parán, donde se les unieron unos hombres de ese lugar. De allí siguieron hacia Egipto y se presentaron ante el faraón, rey del país, quien le regaló a Hadad una casa y se encargó de darle sustento y tierras.

Pharaoh was so pleased with Hadad that he gave him a sister of his own wife, Queen Tahpenes, in marriage.

Hadad agradó tanto al faraón que este le dio por esposa a su cuñada, una hermana de la reina Tapenés.

The sister of Tahpenes bore him a son named Genubath, whom Tahpenes brought up in the royal palace. There Genubath lived with Pharaoh’s own children.

La hermana de Tapenés dio a luz un hijo, al que llamó Guenubat, y Tapenés lo educó en el palacio real. De modo que Guenubat creció junto con los hijos del faraón.

While he was in Egypt, Hadad heard that David rested with his ancestors and that Joab the commander of the army was also dead. Then Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, that I may return to my own country.”

Mientras Hadad estaba en Egipto, se enteró de que ya habían muerto David y Joab, general del ejército. Entonces Hadad le dijo al faraón:

―Déjame regresar a mi país.

“What have you lacked here that you want to go back to your own country?” Pharaoh asked.

“Nothing,” Hadad replied, “but do let me go!”

―¿Y por qué quieres regresar a tu país? —le preguntó el faraón—. ¿Acaso te falta algo aquí?

―No —respondió Hadad—, ¡pero de todos modos déjame ir!

And God raised up against Solomon another adversary, Rezon son of Eliada, who had fled from his master, Hadadezer king of Zobah.

Dios también incitó a Rezón hijo de Eliadá para que fuera adversario de Salomón. Rezón, que había huido de su amo Hadad Ezer, rey de Sobá,

When David destroyed Zobah’s army, Rezon gathered a band of men around him and became their leader; they went to Damascus, where they settled and took control.

formó una banda de rebeldes y se convirtió en su jefe. Cuando David destruyó a los sirios, los rebeldes fueron a Damasco y allí establecieron su gobierno.

Rezon was Israel’s adversary as long as Solomon lived, adding to the trouble caused by Hadad. So Rezon ruled in Aram and was hostile toward Israel.

Jeroboam Rebels Against Solomon

Así fue como Rezón llegó a ser rey de Siria. Mientras vivió Salomón, Rezón aborreció a Israel y fue su adversario, de modo que agravó el daño causado por Hadad.

Also, Jeroboam son of Nebat rebelled against the king. He was one of Solomon’s officials, an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah.

También se rebeló contra el rey Salomón uno de sus funcionarios, llamado Jeroboán hijo de Nabat. Este Jeroboán era efrateo, oriundo de Seredá; su madre se llamaba Zerúa, y era viuda.

Here is the account of how he rebelled against the king: Solomon had built the terraces^[a] and had filled in the gap in the wall of the city of David his father.

La rebelión de Jeroboán tuvo lugar cuando Salomón estaba construyendo los terraplenes^[c] para cerrar la brecha en el muro de la Ciudad de David, su padre.

Now Jeroboam was a man of standing, and when Solomon saw how well the young man did his work, he put him in charge of the whole labor force of the tribes of Joseph.

Jeroboán se había ganado el respeto de todos, de modo que cuando Salomón vio su buen desempeño lo puso a supervisar todo el trabajo forzado que se realizaba entre los descendientes de José.

About that time Jeroboam was going out of Jerusalem, and Ahijah the prophet of Shiloh met him on the way, wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone out in the country,

Un día en que Jeroboán salía de Jerusalén, se encontró en el camino con el profeta Ahías de Siló, quien llevaba puesto un manto nuevo. Los dos estaban solos en el campo.

and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces.

Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes.

le dijo a Jeroboán: «Toma diez pedazos para ti, porque así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: “Ahora voy a arrancarle de la mano a Salomón el reino, y a ti te voy a dar diez tribus.

But for the sake of my servant David and the city of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, he will have one tribe.

A él le dejaré una sola tribu, y esto por consideración a mi siervo David y a Jerusalén, la ciudad que he escogido entre todas las tribus de Israel.

I will do this because they have^[b] forsaken me and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Molek the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked in obedience to me, nor done what is right in my eyes, nor kept my decrees and laws as David, Solomon’s father, did.

Voy a hacerlo así porque él me ha abandonado^[d] y adora a Astarté, diosa de los sidonios, a Quemós, dios de los moabitas, y a Moloc, dios de los amonitas. Salomón no ha seguido mis caminos; no ha hecho lo que me agrada ni ha cumplido mis decretos y leyes como hizo David, su padre.

“‘But I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand; I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees.

»”Sin embargo, no le quitaré todo el reino a Salomón, sino que lo dejaré gobernar todos los días de su vida, por consideración a David mi siervo, a quien escogí y quien cumplió mis mandamientos y decretos.

I will take the kingdom from his son’s hands and give you ten tribes.

Le quitaré el reino a su hijo, y te daré a ti diez tribus.

I will give one tribe to his son so that David my servant may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put my Name.

Pero a su hijo le dejaré una sola tribu, para que en Jerusalén, la ciudad donde decidí habitar,^[e] la lámpara de mi siervo David se mantenga siempre encendida delante de mí.

However, as for you, I will take you, and you will rule over all that your heart desires; you will be king over Israel.

En lo que a ti atañe, yo te haré rey de Israel, y extenderás tu reino a tu gusto.

If you do whatever I command you and walk in obedience to me and do what is right in my eyes by obeying my decrees and commands, as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you a dynasty as enduring as the one I built for David and will give Israel to you.

Si haces todo lo que te ordeno, y sigues mis caminos, haciendo lo que me agrada y cumpliendo mis decretos y mandamientos, como hizo David mi siervo, estaré contigo. Estableceré para ti una dinastía tan firme como la que establecí para David;^[f] y te daré Israel.

I will humble David’s descendants because of this, but not forever.’”

Así que haré sufrir a la descendencia de David, aunque no para siempre”».

Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam fled to Egypt, to Shishak the king, and stayed there until Solomon’s death.

Solomon’s Death

Salomón, por su parte, intentó matar a Jeroboán, pero este huyó a Egipto y se quedó allí, bajo la protección del rey Sisac, hasta la muerte de Salomón.

As for the other events of Solomon’s reign—all he did and the wisdom he displayed—are they not written in the book of the annals of Solomon?

Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years.

quien durante cuarenta años reinó en Jerusalén sobre todo Israel.

Then he rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam his son succeeded him as king.

Cuando murió, fue sepultado en la Ciudad de David, su padre, y su hijo Roboán le sucedió en el trono.
