Then all Israel from Dan to Beersheba and from the land of Gilead came together as one and assembled before the Lord in Mizpah.

The leaders of all the people of the tribes of Israel took their places in the assembly of God’s people, four hundred thousand men armed with swords.

Вожди всего народа, всех родов Исроила, заняли свои места в собрании народа Всевышнего – четыреста тысяч пеших воинов, вооружённых мечами.

(The Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the Israelites said, “Tell us how this awful thing happened.”

(А вениамитяне услышали о том, что исроильтяне пошли в Мицпу.) И тогда исроильтяне сказали:

– Расскажите нам, как случилось это страшное дело.

So the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, said, “I and my concubine came to Gibeah in Benjamin to spend the night.

Левит, муж убитой женщины, сказал:

– Я и моя наложница пришли в Гиву, что в земле Вениамина, чтобы заночевать там.

During the night the men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house, intending to kill me. They raped my concubine, and she died.

Ночью жители Гивы пришли за мной и окружили дом, намереваясь меня убить. Они изнасиловали мою наложницу, и она умерла.

I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel’s inheritance, because they committed this lewd and outrageous act in Israel.

Я взял её, разрезал на части и послал в каждую область наследия Исроила, потому что они сделали это постыдное и подлое дело в Исроиле.

Now, all you Israelites, speak up and tell me what you have decided to do.”

Итак, все вы, исроильтяне, выскажитесь и дайте свой совет.

All the men rose up together as one, saying, “None of us will go home. No, not one of us will return to his house.

Весь народ поднялся, как один человек, говоря:

– Никто из нас не пойдёт домой. Нет, никто из нас не возвратится в свой дом.

But now this is what we’ll do to Gibeah: We’ll go up against it in the order decided by casting lots.

Но вот что мы сделаем с Гивой: мы бросим жребий и определим, кто должен пойти на неё.

We’ll take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred from a thousand, and a thousand from ten thousand, to get provisions for the army. Then, when the army arrives at Gibeah^[a] in Benjamin, it can give them what they deserve for this outrageous act done in Israel.”

Мы возьмём по десять человек из каждой сотни всех родов Исроила, сотню из тысячи и тысячу из десяти тысяч, чтобы достать для войска съестных припасов. И когда войско придёт в Гиву, что в земле Вениамина, оно воздаст им по заслугам за эту подлость, совершённую ими в Исроиле.

So all the Israelites got together and united as one against the city.

И все воины Исроила собрались вместе и объединились, как один человек, против этого города.

The tribes of Israel sent messengers throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What about this awful crime that was committed among you?

Роды Исроила послали людей по всему роду Вениамина, говоря:

– Что за страшное дело вы совершили в Исроиле?

Now turn those wicked men of Gibeah over to us so that we may put them to death and purge the evil from Israel.”

But the Benjamites would not listen to their fellow Israelites.

Выдайте этих порочных людей из Гивы, чтобы мы могли предать их смерти и искоренить в Исроиле зло.

Но вениамитяне не хотели слушать своих соплеменников-исроильтян.

From their towns they came together at Gibeah to fight against the Israelites.

Из своих городов они собрались в Гиве, чтобы воевать с исроильтянами.

At once the Benjamites mobilized twenty-six thousand swordsmen from their towns, in addition to seven hundred able young men from those living in Gibeah.

Вениамитяне тотчас же выставили двадцать шесть тысяч воинов, вооружённых мечами, от своих городов, не считая семисот отборных воинов из числа жителей Гивы.

Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred select troops who were left-handed, each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss.

Среди этого войска было семьсот отборных воинов, которые были левшами, каждый из них мог метнуть из пращи камень в волос и не промахнуться.

Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen, all of them fit for battle.

Исроил, не включая сюда Вениамина, выставил четыреста тысяч человек, вооружённых мечами, все они были воинами.

The Israelites went up to Bethel^[b] and inquired of God. They said, “Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Benjamites?”

The Lord replied, “Judah shall go first.”

Исроильтяне пришли в Вефиль^[a] и спросили Всевышнего. Они сказали:

– Кто из нас должен идти воевать с вениамитянами первым?

Вечный ответил:

– Первым пойдёт Иуда.

The next morning the Israelites got up and pitched camp near Gibeah.

На следующее утро исроильтяне встали и разбили стан неподалёку от Гивы.

The Israelites went out to fight the Benjamites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah.

Исроильтяне вышли, чтобы сразиться с вениамитянами, и выстроились в боевой порядок напротив Гивы.

The Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites on the battlefield that day.

Вениамитяне вышли из Гивы и сразили в тот день на поле боя двадцать две тысячи исроильтян.

But the Israelites encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day.

Но исроильтяне, ободряя друг друга, вновь выстроились в боевой порядок там же, где и в первый день.

The Israelites went up and wept before the Lord until evening, and they inquired of the Lord. They said, “Shall we go up again to fight against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites?”

The Lord answered, “Go up against them.”

(Исроильтяне пошли, плакали перед Вечным до самого вечера и спрашивали Его:

– Идти ли нам опять сражаться с нашими братьями вениамитянами?

Вечный ответил:

– Идите против них.

Then the Israelites drew near to Benjamin the second day.

Тогда исроильтяне приблизились к Вениамину во второй день.)

This time, when the Benjamites came out from Gibeah to oppose them, they cut down another eighteen thousand Israelites, all of them armed with swords.

На этот раз вениамитяне, выйдя из Гивы им навстречу, сразили ещё восемнадцать тысяч исроильтян, вооружённых мечами.

Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the Lord. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord.

Исроильтяне, весь народ, пришли в Вефиль и плакали там, сидя перед Вечным. Они постились в тот день до вечера и принесли Вечному жертвы всесожжения и жертвы примирения.

And the Israelites inquired of the Lord. (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there,

Затем они спросили Вечного. (В те дни сундук соглашения^[b] Всевышнего был там,

with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, ministering before it.) They asked, “Shall we go up again to fight against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites, or not?”

The Lord responded, “Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands.”

а Пинхас, сын Элеазара, внук Хоруна, служил перед ним.) Они спросили:

– Идти ли нам опять сражаться с нашими братьями вениамитянами или нет?

Вечный ответил:

– Идите. Завтра Я отдам их в ваши руки.

Then Israel set an ambush around Gibeah.

Исроильтяне поставили вокруг Гивы засаду.

They went up against the Benjamites on the third day and took up positions against Gibeah as they had done before.

Они пошли на вениамитян в третий день, и встали в боевой порядок напротив Гивы, как и прежде.

The Benjamites came out to meet them and were drawn away from the city. They began to inflict casualties on the Israelites as before, so that about thirty men fell in the open field and on the roads—the one leading to Bethel and the other to Gibeah.

Вениамитяне вышли им навстречу, и их увели от города. Они начали, как и прежде, наносить исроильтянам потери, так что около тридцати человек пало убитыми в поле и на дорогах, одна из которых ведёт к Вефилю, а другая к Гиве.

While the Benjamites were saying, “We are defeating them as before,” the Israelites were saying, “Let’s retreat and draw them away from the city to the roads.”

И пока вениамитяне говорили: «Мы бьём их, как и прежде», исроильтяне говорили: «Будем отступать и уведём их от города на дороги».

All the men of Israel moved from their places and took up positions at Baal Tamar, and the Israelite ambush charged out of its place on the west^[c] of Gibeah.^[d]

Основные силы исроильтян переместились к Баал-Тамару, а те, кто был в засаде, ринулись со своего места к западу от^[c] Гивы.

Then ten thousand of Israel’s able young men made a frontal attack on Gibeah. The fighting was so heavy that the Benjamites did not realize how near disaster was.

На Гиву устремилось десять тысяч лучших исроильских воинов, и началась такая жестокая битва, что вениамитяне даже не понимали, как близка беда.

The Lord defeated Benjamin before Israel, and on that day the Israelites struck down 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.

Вечный разбил Вениамина перед Исроилом, и в тот день исроильтяне сразили двадцать пять тысяч сто вениамитян, вооружённых мечами.

Then the Benjamites saw that they were beaten.

Now the men of Israel had given way before Benjamin, because they relied on the ambush they had set near Gibeah.

И вениамитяне увидели, что они разбиты.

Исроильтяне отступили перед вениамитянами, потому что надеялись на засаду, которую поставили неподалёку от Гивы.

Those who had been in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, spread out and put the whole city to the sword.

Воины, которые были в засаде, стремительно бросились на Гиву, вступили в город и предали его мечу.

The Israelites had arranged with the ambush that they should send up a great cloud of smoke from the city,

А исроильтяне договорились с воинами из засады об условном знаке: когда над городом начнёт подниматься дым,

and then the Israelites would counterattack.

The Benjamites had begun to inflict casualties on the Israelites (about thirty), and they said, “We are defeating them as in the first battle.”

основные силы исроильтян должны будут перейти в наступление.

А вениамитяне уже начали наносить исроильтянам потери, убив около тридцати из них. Они думали: «Конечно, мы бьём их, как и в первой битве».

But when the column of smoke began to rise from the city, the Benjamites turned and saw the whole city going up in smoke.

Но когда из города начал подниматься столб дыма, вениамитяне повернулись и увидели, как от города к небу поднимается дым!

Then the Israelites counterattacked, and the Benjamites were terrified, because they realized that disaster had come on them.

Исроильтяне перешли в наступление, и вениамитяне испугались, потому что поняли, что пришла беда.

So they fled before the Israelites in the direction of the wilderness, but they could not escape the battle. And the Israelites who came out of the towns cut them down there.

И они побежали перед исроильтянами к пустыне, но битва настигла их, и те, кто уже выходили из города, разили их, зажав посередине.

They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them and easily^[e] overran them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east.

Окружив вениамитян, они преследовали и разили их от Нохи до восточной стороны Гивы.

Eighteen thousand Benjamites fell, all of them valiant fighters.

Из вениамитян пало восемнадцать тысяч человек, все они были храбрыми воинами.

As they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, the Israelites cut down five thousand men along the roads. They kept pressing after the Benjamites as far as Gidom and struck down two thousand more.

Когда они повернулись и побежали к пустыне, к скале Риммон, исроильтяне перебили пять тысяч человек на дорогах. Они гнались за ними до самого Гидома и сразили ещё две тысячи.

On that day twenty-five thousand Benjamite swordsmen fell, all of them valiant fighters.

В тот день пало двадцать пять тысяч вениамитян, носивших меч, все они были храбрыми воинами.

But six hundred of them turned and fled into the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months.

Но шестьсот человек повернулись и бежали в пустыню к скале Риммон, и там оставались четыре месяца.

The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. All the towns they came across they set on fire.

А исроильтяне вернулись к вениамитянам и предали их мечу – людей, животных и всё, что нашли. И все города на их пути они подожгли.
