Jeremiah 38

Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehukal^[a] son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said,

Шефатия, сын Маттана, Гедалия, сын Пашхура, Юхал, сын Шелемии, и Пашхур, сын Малхии, услышали то, что Иеремия говорил всему народу:

“This is what the Lord says: ‘Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague, but whoever goes over to the Babylonians^[b] will live. They will escape with their lives; they will live.’

«Так говорит Вечный: “Все, кто останется в этом городе, умрут от меча, голода или мора, а все, кто выйдет к вавилонянам, уцелеют. Они спасут свои жизни и останутся в живых”.

And this is what the Lord says: ‘This city will certainly be given into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.’”

Так говорит Вечный: “Этот город непременно достанется войску царя Вавилона, который захватит его”».

Then the officials said to the king, “This man should be put to death. He is discouraging the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin.”

И придворные сказали царю:

– Этого человека нужно предать смерти. Его слова лишают присутствия духа и воинов, которые остались в этом городе, и весь народ. Этот человек ищет твоему народу не добра, а погибели.

“He is in your hands,” King Zedekiah answered. “The king can do nothing to oppose you.”

– Он в ваших руках, – ответил царь Цедекия. – Царь не может сделать ничего вопреки вашей воле.

So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.

Они схватили Иеремию и бросили его в колодец Малхии, сына царя, который находился во дворе темницы. Они опустили Иеремию в колодец на верёвках. В нём не было воды, только тина, и Иеремия погрузился в неё.

But Ebed-Melek, a Cushite,^[c] an official^[d] in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,

Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him,

Эвед-Малик вышел из дворца и сказал ему:

“My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city.”

– Господин мой царь, эти люди совершили грех, поступив так с пророком Иеремией. Они бросили его в колодец, в котором его ждёт голодная смерть, когда в городе не останется больше хлеба.

Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite, “Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”

Тогда царь повелел эфиопу Эвед-Малику:

– Возьми с собой отсюда тридцать человек и вытащи пророка Иеремию из колодца, прежде чем он умрёт.

So Ebed-Melek took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.

Эвед-Малик взял с собой людей и пошёл во дворец, в комнату под сокровищницей. Он взял там тряпьё и изношенную одежду и спустил это на верёвках в колодец к Иеремии.

Ebed-Melek the Cushite said to Jeremiah, “Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.” Jeremiah did so,

Потом он сказал Иеремии:

– Подложи это тряпьё и изношенную одежду себе под мышки, чтобы не натереть верёвкой.

Иеремия так и сделал,

and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

Zedekiah Questions Jeremiah Again

и его вытянули на верёвках из колодца. После этого он остался в царской темнице.

Цедекия вновь просит совета у Иеремии

Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to the third entrance to the temple of the Lord. “I am going to ask you something,” the king said to Jeremiah. “Do not hide anything from me.”

Царь Цедекия послал за Иеремией, и пророка привели к третьему входу в храм Вечного.

– Я хочу спросить у тебя кое-что, – сказал царь Иеремии. – Не скрывай от меня ничего.

Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I give you an answer, will you not kill me? Even if I did give you counsel, you would not listen to me.”

Иеремия сказал Цедекии:

– Если я отвечу тебе, разве ты не убьёшь меня? Даже если я дам тебе совет, ты меня не послушаешь.

But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has given us breath, I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who want to kill you.”

Но царь Цедекия тайно поклялся Иеремии:

– Верно, как и то, что жив Вечный, Который вложил в нас дыхание, – я не убью тебя и не выдам тем, кто ищет твоей смерти.

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live.

Тогда Иеремия сказал Цедекии:

– Так говорит Вечный, Бог Сил, Бог Исроила: «Если ты сдашься полководцам царя Вавилона, твою жизнь пощадят, а этот город не сожгут; и ты, и твоя семья уцелеете.

But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be given into the hands of the Babylonians and they will burn it down; you yourself will not escape from them.’”

А если ты не сдашься полководцам царя Вавилона, этот город достанется вавилонянам, и они сожгут его, и ты сам не спасёшься от их рук».

King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me over to them and they will mistreat me.”

Царь Цедекия сказал Иеремии:

– Я боюсь иудеев, которые перебежали к вавилонянам, ведь вавилоняне могут выдать меня им, и те меня растерзают.

“They will not hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared.

– Они тебя не выдадут, – сказал Иеремия. – Послушай Вечного, сделай так, как я тебе сказал. Тогда ты будешь благополучен и останешься жив.

But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the Lord has revealed to me:

А если ты откажешься сдаться, то вот, что открыл мне Вечный:

All the women left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. Those women will say to you:

всех женщин, которые остались во дворце царя Иудеи, выведут к военачальникам царя Вавилона. Эти женщины будут говорить тебе:

“All your wives and children will be brought out to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape from their hands but will be captured by the king of Babylon; and this city will^[e] be burned down.”

Всех твоих жён и детей выведут к вавилонянам. Ты и сам не спасёшься от их рук, но будешь схвачен царём Вавилона, а этот город будет сожжён.

Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Do not let anyone know about this conversation, or you may die.

Тогда Цедекия сказал Иеремии:

– Пусть никто не знает об этом разговоре, иначе ты умрёшь.

If the officials hear that I talked with you, and they come to you and say, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us or we will kill you,’

Если вельможи, узнав, что я говорил с тобой, придут к тебе и скажут: «Поведай нам, что ты сказал царю, и что сказал тебе царь. Не скрывай от нас ничего, иначе мы тебя убьём»,

then tell them, ‘I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan’s house to die there.’”

то скажи им: «Я просил царя не отправлять меня обратно в дом Ионафана, чтобы мне не умереть там».

All the officials did come to Jeremiah and question him, and he told them everything the king had ordered him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had heard his conversation with the king.

Все вельможи собрались к Иеремии расспросить его, и он ответил им так, как велел ему царь. Тогда они ему ничего не сказали, так как никто не слышал, о чём он говорил с царём.

And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured.

The Fall of Jerusalem
