1 Samuel 5

After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

Захватив сундук Всевышнего, филистимляне принесли его из Эвен-Езера в Ашдод.

Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.

Затем они внесли сундук в храм Дагона^[a] и поставили около статуи Дагона.

When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place.

Когда жители Ашдода встали на другой день рано утром, Дагон, упавший лицом на землю, лежал перед сундуком Вечного! Они подняли статую Дагона и вернули на прежнее место.

But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.

Но на следующее утро, когда они встали, Дагон опять лежал лицом на земле, перед сундуком Вечного! Его голова и руки были отломаны и валялись на пороге, целым осталось лишь туловище.

That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.

Вот почему до сегодняшнего дня ни жрецы Дагона, ни входящие в его храм в Ашдоде не наступают на порог, где он лежал.

The Lord’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumors.^[a]

Вечный сурово наказал жителей Ашдода и его окрестностей, наслав на них опустошение и поразив их наростами.^[b]

When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.”

Когда жители Ашдода увидели то, что происходит, они сказали:

– Сундук исроильского Бога не должен находиться здесь у нас, потому что Его гнев против нас и нашего бога Дагона страшен.

So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”

They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.

Они созвали всех филистимских правителей и спросили их:

– Что нам делать с сундуком исроильского Бога?

Они ответили:

– Пусть сундук исроильского Бога переправится в Гат.

И переправили сундук Бога Исроила.

But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic. He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.^[b]

Но после того, как они переправили его, рука Вечного обратилась и против этого города, приведя его в великий ужас. Вечный поразил жителей города, молодых и старых, наростами.

So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.

As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.”

И они отослали сундук Всевышнего в Экрон.

Когда сундук вносили в Экрон, жители кричали:

– Сундук исроильского Бога принесли к нам, чтобы погубить нас и наш народ!

So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it^[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it.

Они созвали всех филистимских правителей и сказали:

– Отошлите сундук исроильского Бога из нашей земли. Пусть он вернётся на своё место, иначе он^[c] умертвит всех нас.

И смерть наполнила тот город ужасом; гнев Всевышнего на него был очень страшен.

Those who did not die were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

Те, кто не умер, были поражены наростами, и вопль города доходил до небес.
