1 Kings 20

Now Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and chariots, he went up and besieged Samaria and attacked it.

Бен-Адад^[a], царь Сирии, собрал войско. С ним было тридцать два царя с конями и колесницами. Он выступил, осадил Сомарию и повёл войну против неё.

He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, saying, “This is what Ben-Hadad says:

Он отправил в город к царю Ахаву послов, чтобы сказать:

‘Your silver and gold are mine, and the best of your wives and children are mine.’”

«Так говорит Бен-Адад: “Твои серебро и золото – мои, и лучшие из твоих жён и детей – мои”».

The king of Israel answered, “Just as you say, my lord the king. I and all I have are yours.”

Царь Исроила ответил:

– Как ты и говоришь, господин мой царь, я и всё, что у меня есть, – твоё.

The messengers came again and said, “This is what Ben-Hadad says: ‘I sent to demand your silver and gold, your wives and your children.

Послы пришли вновь и сказали:

– Так говорит Бен-Адад: «Я посылал к тебе требовать твоего серебра и золота, твоих жён и детей.

But about this time tomorrow I am going to send my officials to search your palace and the houses of your officials. They will seize everything you value and carry it away.’”

Но завтра к этому времени я пошлю слуг обыскать твой дворец и дома твоих приближённых. Они возьмут всё, что им понравится^[b], и унесут с собой».

The king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said to them, “See how this man is looking for trouble! When he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him.”

Царь Исроила призвал всех старейшин страны и сказал им:

– Смотрите, как этот человек ищет зла! Когда он посылал за моими жёнами и детьми, моим серебром и золотом, я не отказал ему.

The elders and the people all answered, “Don’t listen to him or agree to his demands.”

Все старейшины и весь народ ответили ему:

– Не слушай его и не уступай ему.

So he replied to Ben-Hadad’s messengers, “Tell my lord the king, ‘Your servant will do all you demanded the first time, but this demand I cannot meet.’” They left and took the answer back to Ben-Hadad.

Тогда он ответил послам Бен-Адада:

– Скажите господину моему царю: «То, чего ты требовал от твоего раба в первый раз, я сделаю, а этого сделать не могу».

Они ушли и передали этот ответ Бен-Ададу.

Then Ben-Hadad sent another message to Ahab: “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if enough dust remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful.”

Тогда Бен-Адад послал сказать Ахаву:

– Пусть боги сурово накажут меня, если от Сомарии останется достаточно праха, чтобы дать каждому из моих людей по пригоршне!

The king of Israel answered, “Tell him: ‘One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.’”

Царь Исроила ответил:

– Скажите ему: «Воин, надевающий доспехи, не должен хвастать, как тот, кто их снимает после победы».

Ben-Hadad heard this message while he and the kings were drinking in their tents,^[a] and he ordered his men: “Prepare to attack.” So they prepared to attack the city.

Ahab Defeats Ben-Hadad

Бен-Адад выслушал это, когда он и цари пили в своих палатках, и приказал своим людям:

– Готовьтесь к бою!

И они приготовились напасть на город.

Первое поражение сирийцев

Meanwhile a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel and announced, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Do you see this vast army? I will give it into your hand today, and then you will know that I am the Lord.’”

Тем временем к Ахаву, царю Исроила, пришёл пророк и возвестил ему:

– Так говорит Вечный: «Видишь это огромное войско? Сегодня Я отдам его в твои руки, и ты узнаешь, что Я – Вечный».

“But who will do this?” asked Ahab.

The prophet replied, “This is what the Lord says: ‘The junior officers under the provincial commanders will do it.’”

“And who will start the battle?” he asked.

The prophet answered, “You will.”

– Но кто же сделает это? – спросил Ахав.

Пророк ответил:

– Так говорит Вечный: «Молодые слуги наместников провинций».

– А кто начнёт сражение? – спросил он.

– Ты, – ответил пророк.

So Ahab summoned the 232 junior officers under the provincial commanders. Then he assembled the rest of the Israelites, 7,000 in all.

Тогда Ахав призвал молодых слуг наместников провинций, двести тридцать два человека. Затем он собрал всех остальных исроильтян – семь тысяч человек общим счётом.

They set out at noon while Ben-Hadad and the 32 kings allied with him were in their tents getting drunk.

Они вышли в полдень, когда Бен-Адад и тридцать два союзных с ним царя напились в своих шатрах.

The junior officers under the provincial commanders went out first.

Now Ben-Hadad had dispatched scouts, who reported, “Men are advancing from Samaria.”

Молодые слуги наместников провинций вышли первыми.

Бен-Адад выслал лазутчиков, и те доложили ему:

– Из Сомарии выходят люди.

He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take them alive.”

Он сказал:

– Пришли ли они с миром или с войной, возьмите их живыми!

The junior officers under the provincial commanders marched out of the city with the army behind them

Молодые слуги наместников провинций и исроильское войско, которое шло за ними, вышли из города.

and each one struck down his opponent. At that, the Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-Hadad king of Aram escaped on horseback with some of his horsemen.

Каждый исроильтянин убивал своего противника, сирийцы бежали и Исроил преследовал их, но царь Сирии Бен-Адад спасся на коне вместе с другими всадниками.

The king of Israel advanced and overpowered the horses and chariots and inflicted heavy losses on the Arameans.

Царь Исроила продвинулся вперёд, захватил коней и колесницы и нанёс сирийцам тяжёлые потери.

Второе поражение сирийцев

Afterward, the prophet came to the king of Israel and said, “Strengthen your position and see what must be done, because next spring the king of Aram will attack you again.”

К царю Исроила пришёл пророк и сказал ему:

– Укрепись и посмотри, что тебе нужно сделать, потому что следующей весной царь Сирии нападёт на тебя вновь.

Meanwhile, the officials of the king of Aram advised him, “Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they were too strong for us. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will be stronger than they.

Тем временем приближённые сирийского царя советовали ему:

– Их Бог – это Бог гор. Вот почему они слишком сильны для нас. Но если мы сразимся с ними на равнине, мы непременно окажемся сильнее их.

Do this: Remove all the kings from their commands and replace them with other officers.

Сделай вот что: убери всех царей с их мест в войске и замени другими военачальниками.

You must also raise an army like the one you lost—horse for horse and chariot for chariot—so we can fight Israel on the plains. Then surely we will be stronger than they.” He agreed with them and acted accordingly.

Ещё набери такое войско, как то, что ты потерял, – коня вместо коня и колесницу вместо колесницы, чтобы нам сразиться с Исроилом на равнине. Тогда мы непременно окажемся сильнее их.

Он согласился с ними и так и сделал.

The next spring Ben-Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.

Следующей весной Бен-Адад собрал сирийцев и пошёл к Афеку, чтобы сразиться с Исроилом.

When the Israelites were also mustered and given provisions, they marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped opposite them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.

Когда исроильтяне также были собраны и получили продовольствие, они выступили им навстречу. Исроильтяне встали станом перед ними, как два маленьких козьих стада, а сирийцы заполонили всю округу.

The man of God came up and told the king of Israel, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because the Arameans think the Lord is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know that I am the Lord.’”

Пророк пришёл к царю Исроила и сказал ему:

– Так говорит Вечный: «Раз сирийцы говорят, что Вечный – это Бог гор, а не Бог долин, Я отдам это огромное войско в твои руки, и вы узнаете, что Я – Вечный».

For seven days they camped opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle was joined. The Israelites inflicted a hundred thousand casualties on the Aramean foot soldiers in one day.

Семь дней стояли они друг напротив друга, и на седьмой день разгорелась битва. Исроильтяне нанесли сирийцам потери в сто тысяч пеших воинов за один день.

The rest of them escaped to the city of Aphek, where the wall collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of them. And Ben-Hadad fled to the city and hid in an inner room.

Остальные бежали в Афек, где на двадцать семь тысяч из них рухнула стена. Бен-Адад тоже бежал в город и спрятался во внутренней комнате.

Ахав щадит Бен-Адада

His officials said to him, “Look, we have heard that the kings of Israel are merciful. Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life.”

Приближённые Бен-Адада сказали ему:

– Послушай, мы слышали, что цари Исроила милостивы. Позволь нам пойти к царю Исроила одетыми в рубище и с верёвками на головах в знак смирения. Может быть, он пощадит твою жизнь.

Wearing sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says: ‘Please let me live.’”

The king answered, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”

И одетые в рубище, с верёвками на головах, они пришли к царю Исроила и сказали:

– Твой раб Бен-Адад говорит: «Прошу тебя, оставь мне жизнь».

Царь ответил:

– Разве он ещё жив? Он мой брат.

The men took this as a good sign and were quick to pick up his word. “Yes, your brother Ben-Hadad!” they said.

“Go and get him,” the king said. When Ben-Hadad came out, Ahab had him come up into his chariot.

Послы увидели в этом добрый знак и поспешно подхватили его слово:

– Да, Бен-Адад твой брат! – сказали они.

– Идите и приведите его, – сказал царь.

Когда Бен-Адад вышел к нему, Ахав усадил его в свою колесницу.

“I will return the cities my father took from your father,” Ben-Hadad offered. “You may set up your own market areas in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.”

Ahab said, “On the basis of a treaty I will set you free.” So he made a treaty with him, and let him go.

A Prophet Condemns Ahab

– Я верну города, которые мой отец взял у твоего отца, – сказал Бен-Адад. – Ты можешь открыть в Дамаске базары, как мой отец в Сомарии.

Ахав ответил:

– На таких условиях я отпущу тебя.

Он заключил с ним договор и отпустил его.

Пророк упрекает Ахава

By the word of the Lord one of the company of the prophets said to his companion, “Strike me with your weapon,” but he refused.

По слову Вечного один ученик пророков сказал другому:

– Прошу, побей меня, – но тот отказался.

So the prophet said, “Because you have not obeyed the Lord, as soon as you leave me a lion will kill you.” And after the man went away, a lion found him and killed him.

Тогда он сказал:

– Раз ты не послушался Вечного, как только ты уйдёшь от меня, тебя убьёт лев.

И после того как тот человек ушёл, лев выскочил ему навстречу и убил его.

The prophet found another man and said, “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him and wounded him.

Пророк нашёл другого человека и сказал:

– Прошу, побей меня.

Тот человек изранил его побоями.

Then the prophet went and stood by the road waiting for the king. He disguised himself with his headband down over his eyes.

Тогда пророк пошёл и встал у дороги, ожидая царя. Он закрылся, опустив накидку на глаза.

As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, “Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, ‘Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life, or you must pay a talent^[b] of silver.’

Когда царь проезжал мимо, он закричал ему:

– Твой раб был в самой гуще боя, и воин пришёл ко мне с пленником и сказал: «Стереги этого человека. Если он пропадёт, твоя жизнь будет за его жизнь, или же ты заплатишь тридцать шесть килограммов серебра^[c]».

While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.”

“That is your sentence,” the king of Israel said. “You have pronounced it yourself.”

Но когда твой раб отвлёкся, пленник скрылся.

– Таков и будет тебе приговор, – сказал царь Исроила. – Ты сам его произнёс.

Then the prophet quickly removed the headband from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets.

Тогда пророк быстро сорвал с глаз накидку, и царь Исроила узнал в нём одного из пророков.

He said to the king, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You have set free a man I had determined should die.^[c] Therefore it is your life for his life, your people for his people.’”

Он сказал царю:

– Так говорит Вечный: «Ты отпустил человека, которому Я предназначил умереть. Поэтому твоя жизнь будет за его жизнь, а твой народ – за его народ».

Sullen and angry, the king of Israel went to his palace in Samaria.

Мрачным и разгневанным вернулся царь Исроила в сомарийский дворец.
