Judges 8

Now the Ephraimites asked Gideon, “Why have you treated us like this? Why didn’t you call us when you went to fight Midian?” And they challenged him vigorously.

Ефраимиты сказали Гедеону:

– Почему ты так обошёлся с нами? Почему ты не позвал нас, когда шёл сражаться с мадианитянами?

И они сильно ругали его.

But he answered them, “What have I accomplished compared to you? Aren’t the gleanings of Ephraim’s grapes better than the full grape harvest of Abiezer?

Но он ответил им:

– Что такого я совершил по сравнению с вами? Разве виноград, который добирал Ефраим, не лучше, чем весь урожай моего клана, клана Авиезера?

God gave Oreb and Zeeb, the Midianite leaders, into your hands. What was I able to do compared to you?” At this, their resentment against him subsided.

Аллах отдал в ваши руки мадианских вождей Орива и Зива. Что же такого я мог сделать, чтобы сравниться с вами?

Когда он сказал им это, их негодование утихло.

Gideon and his three hundred men, exhausted yet keeping up the pursuit, came to the Jordan and crossed it.

Гедеон и триста воинов, которые были с ним, утомились, но продолжали погоню. Они пришли к Иордану и переправились через него.

He said to the men of Sukkoth, “Give my troops some bread; they are worn out, and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”

Гедеон сказал жителям Суккота:

– Дайте моим воинам хлеба, они утомлены, а я всё ещё преследую мадианских царей Зеваха и Салмана.

But the officials of Sukkoth said, “Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your troops?”

Then Gideon replied, “Just for that, when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with desert thorns and briers.”

Гедеон ответил:

– За это, когда Вечный отдаст в мои руки Зеваха и Салмана, я растерзаю вашу плоть пустынным терновником и шиповником.

From there he went up to Peniel^[a] and made the same request of them, but they answered as the men of Sukkoth had.

Оттуда он поднялся к Пениилу и просил того же, но жители Пениила ответили так же, как и жители Суккота.

So he said to the men of Peniel, “When I return in triumph, I will tear down this tower.”

Тогда он сказал им:

– Когда я вернусь с победой, я разрушу эту башню.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with a force of about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of the armies of the eastern peoples; a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had fallen.

А Зевах и Салман были в Каркоре с войском примерно в пятнадцать тысяч воинов – всё, что осталось от войск восточных народов (всего пало сто двадцать тысяч человек, носящих оружие).

Gideon went up by the route of the nomads east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the unsuspecting army.

Гедеон поднялся по караванному пути восточнее Новы и Иогбеги и застал войско врасплох.

Zebah and Zalmunna, the two kings of Midian, fled, but he pursued them and captured them, routing their entire army.

Зевах и Салман, два мадианских царя, бежали, но он погнался за ними, захватил их и поразил ужасом всё их войско.

Gideon son of Joash then returned from the battle by the Pass of Heres.

Когда Гедеон, сын Иоаша, вернулся с битвы при возвышенности Херес,

He caught a young man of Sukkoth and questioned him, and the young man wrote down for him the names of the seventy-seven officials of Sukkoth, the elders of the town.

он схватил юношу из Суккота, допросил его, и юноша написал ему имена семидесяти семи вельмож Суккота, городских старейшин.

Then Gideon came and said to the men of Sukkoth, “Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me by saying, ‘Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your exhausted men?’”

Тогда Гедеон пришёл и сказал жителям Суккота:

– Вот Зевах и Салман, из-за которых вы издевались надо мной, говоря: «Разве Зевах и Салман уже в твоих руках, чтобы нам давать хлеб твоим утомлённым воинам?»

He took the elders of the town and taught the men of Sukkoth a lesson by punishing them with desert thorns and briers.

Он взял старейшин города и преподал жителям Суккота урок, наказав их пустынным терновником и шиповником.

He also pulled down the tower of Peniel and killed the men of the town.

Ещё он разрушил башню Пениила и перебил жителей этого города.

Then he asked Zebah and Zalmunna, “What kind of men did you kill at Tabor?”

“Men like you,” they answered, “each one with the bearing of a prince.”

После этого он спросил Зеваха и Салмана:

– Каковы были те, кого вы убили на Фаворе?

– Они были как ты, – ответили они, – каждый из них выглядел, как царский сын.

Gideon replied, “Those were my brothers, the sons of my own mother. As surely as the Lord lives, if you had spared their lives, I would not kill you.”

Гедеон сказал:

– Это были мои братья, сыновья моей матери. Верно, как и то, что жив Вечный, – если бы вы пощадили их, я сохранил бы вам жизнь.

Turning to Jether, his oldest son, he said, “Kill them!” But Jether did not draw his sword, because he was only a boy and was afraid.

Повернувшись к Иетеру, своему старшему сыну, Гедеон сказал:

– Подойди и убей их!

Но Иетер не вытащил меча, потому что он был ещё мальчик и боялся.

Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Come, do it yourself. ‘As is the man, so is his strength.’” So Gideon stepped forward and killed them, and took the ornaments off their camels’ necks.

Gideon’s Ephod

Зевах и Салман сказали:

– Подойди и убей нас сам. Каков человек, такова и его сила.

Гедеон подошёл и убил Зеваха и Салмана и забрал украшения в форме полумесяца^[a], которые были на шеях их верблюдов.

Ефод Гедеона

The Israelites said to Gideon, “Rule over us—you, your son and your grandson—because you have saved us from the hand of Midian.”

Исраильтяне сказали Гедеону:

– Правь нами – ты, и твой сын, и твой внук, – ведь ты спас нас от руки мадианитян.

But Gideon told them, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The Lord will rule over you.”

Но Гедеон сказал им:

– Я не буду править вами, и мой сын не будет править вами. Править вами будет Вечный.

And he said, “I do have one request, that each of you give me an earring from your share of the plunder.” (It was the custom of the Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings.)

Затем Гедеон сказал им:

– Я прошу у вас одного, пусть каждый из вас даст мне по серьге из своей доли добычи.

(У врагов были золотые серьги, потому что они были исмаильтянами.)

They answered, “We’ll be glad to give them.” So they spread out a garment, and each of them threw a ring from his plunder onto it.

Они ответили:

– Охотно.

Они расстелили одежду, и каждый бросил в неё по серьге из своей добычи.

The weight of the gold rings he asked for came to seventeen hundred shekels,^[b] not counting the ornaments, the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian or the chains that were on their camels’ necks.

Золотые серьги, которые он собрал, весили чуть больше двадцати килограммов^[b] (это не считая украшений в виде полумесяца, подвесок и пурпурных одежд, которые носили мадианские цари, и цепочек, которые были на шеях у их верблюдов).

Gideon made the gold into an ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his town. All Israel prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and his family.

Gideon’s Death

Гедеон сделал из золота ефод^[c], который оставил в Офре, своём городе. И все исраильтяне стали нарушать верность Аллаху, поклоняясь ефоду, и так он стал западнёй для Гедеона и его семьи.

Thus Midian was subdued before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. During Gideon’s lifetime, the land had peace forty years.

Мадианитяне смирились перед исраильтянами и больше уже не поднимали головы. Пока был жив Гедеон, земля покоилась в мире сорок лет.

Jerub-Baal son of Joash went back home to live.

Иеруб-Баал, сын Иоаша, вернулся домой.

He had seventy sons of his own, for he had many wives.

У него было семьдесят сыновей потому, что у него было много жён.

His concubine, who lived in Shechem, also bore him a son, whom he named Abimelek.

Его наложница, которая жила в городе Шехеме, также родила ему сына, которого он назвал Ави-Маликом («мой отец – царь»).

Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Гедеон, сын Иоаша, умер в глубокой старости и был похоронен в гробнице своего отца в Офре, в земле клана авиезеритов.

No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites again prostituted themselves to the Baals. They set up Baal-Berith as their god

and did not remember the Lord their God, who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.

забыли о Вечном, своём Боге, Который избавил их от рук окружавших их врагов.

They also failed to show any loyalty to the family of Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) in spite of all the good things he had done for them.

Они забыли и о верности семье Иеруб-Баала (он же Гедеон), и о всех благодеяниях, которые он сделал Исраилу.
