Judges 19

In those days Israel had no king.

Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.

But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her parents’ home in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months,

Но она поссорилась с ним^[a] и ушла в дом своего отца в Вифлееме, и пробыла там четыре месяца.

her husband went to her to persuade her to return. He had with him his servant and two donkeys. She took him into her parents’ home, and when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him.

Её муж отправился к ней, чтобы убедить её вернуться. С ним был слуга и два осла. Она ввела его в дом своего отца,

His father-in-law, the woman’s father, prevailed on him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking, and sleeping there.

и тот, увидев его, принял с радостью. Тесть левита, отец молодой женщины, убедил его остаться, и он остался у него на три дня, ел, пил и спал там.

On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to leave, but the woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh yourself with something to eat; then you can go.”

На четвёртый день они встали ранним утром, и левит собрался уходить, но отец молодой женщины сказал зятю:

– Сначала подкрепись, а потом пойдёте.

So the two of them sat down to eat and drink together. Afterward the woman’s father said, “Please stay tonight and enjoy yourself.”

И они вместе сели есть и пить. После этого отец молодой женщины сказал:

– Прошу тебя, останься ещё на ночь и приятно проведи время.

And when the man got up to go, his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night.

И хотя тот человек встал, чтобы идти, тесть убедил его, и он остался там ещё на ночь.

On the morning of the fifth day, when he rose to go, the woman’s father said, “Refresh yourself. Wait till afternoon!” So the two of them ate together.

Утром пятого дня, когда он собрался уходить, отец молодой женщины сказал:

– Подкрепись. Подождите до полудня!

И они вместе ели.

Then when the man, with his concubine and his servant, got up to leave, his father-in-law, the woman’s father, said, “Now look, it’s almost evening. Spend the night here; the day is nearly over. Stay and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow morning you can get up and be on your way home.”

А когда этот человек вместе со своей наложницей и слугой встал, чтобы уйти, отец молодой женщины сказал ему:

– Смотри, уже почти вечер. Переночуйте здесь, ведь день уже на исходе. Останься и приятно проведи время. А завтра рано утром соберётесь в дорогу, и ты пойдёшь домой.

But, unwilling to stay another night, the man left and went toward Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine.

Но не желая оставаться ещё на ночь, этот человек ушёл и направился к Иевусу (то есть Иерусалиму) с двумя навьюченными ослами и наложницей.

When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Come, let’s stop at this city of the Jebusites and spend the night.”

Когда они были рядом с Иевусом и день уже почти прошёл, слуга сказал своему господину:

– Свернём-ка в этот город иевусеев и заночуем там.

His master replied, “No. We won’t go into any city whose people are not Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.”

Его господин ответил:

– Нет. Мы не свернём в город чужаков, которые не принадлежат к народу Исраила. Мы пойдём дальше к городу Гиве.

He added, “Come, let’s try to reach Gibeah or Ramah and spend the night in one of those places.”

И добавил:

– Идём, постараемся добраться до Гивы или Рамы и заночевать в одном из этих мест.

So they went on, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.

Они пошли дальше, и когда подошли к Гиве, что в земле Вениамина, солнце уже село.

There they stopped to spend the night. They went and sat in the city square, but no one took them in for the night.

Они завернули туда на ночлег, вошли в город и сели на городской площади, но никто не позвал их в дом переночевать.

That evening an old man from the hill country of Ephraim, who was living in Gibeah (the inhabitants of the place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the fields.

В тот вечер один старик, который был родом из нагорий Ефраима, но жил в Гиве (а жители этого места были вениамитянами), возвращался с поля после работы.

When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”

Увидев странника на городской площади, старик спросил:

– Откуда ты и куда идёшь?

He answered, “We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the Lord.^[a] No one has taken me in for the night.

Он ответил:

– Мы идём из Вифлеема, что в Иудее, в далёкие места нагорий Ефраима, где я живу. Я ходил в Вифлеем, что в Иудее, и теперь возвращаюсь к себе домой^[b]. Но никто не позвал меня в свой дом.

We have both straw and fodder for our donkeys and bread and wine for ourselves your servants—me, the woman and the young man with us. We don’t need anything.”

А у нас есть и солома, и корм для наших ослов, и хлеб с вином для нас самих, твоих рабов, – для меня, твоей служанки и юноши, который с нами. Больше нам ничего не нужно.

“You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.”

– Пойдёмте ко мне домой, – сказал старик. – Я сам позабочусь о ваших нуждах. Только не ночуйте на площади.

So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.

Он привёл его к себе домой и накормил его ослов. А путники, вымыв ноги, стали есть и пить.

While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.”

Пока они приятно проводили время, жители города, порочные люди, окружили дом. Колотя в дверь, они кричали старику, хозяину дома:

– Выведи того человека, который к тебе пришёл, чтобы нам с ним поразвлечься.

The owner of the house went outside and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing.

Хозяин дома вышел к ним и сказал:

– Нет, друзья мои, не поступайте так низко. Ведь этот человек – мой гость, не делайте такой подлости.

Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”

Смотрите, вот моя дочь-девственница и его наложница. Сейчас я выведу их к вам. Насилуйте их и делайте с ними, что хотите. Но с этим человеком не делайте такой подлости.

But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go.

Но люди не хотели его слушать. Тогда гость вывел к ним свою наложницу. Они насиловали и бесчестили её всю ночь, а когда начало светать, отпустили.

At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

На рассвете женщина вернулась к дому, где был её господин, упала у двери и лежала там, пока не рассвело.

When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold.

Когда утром её господин встал, открыл дверь и вышел, чтобы идти дальше, он увидел свою наложницу, лежавшую у двери, и руки её были на пороге.

He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.

Он сказал ей:

– Вставай, пойдём.

Но ответа не было.^[c] Тогда он положил её на осла и отправился домой.

When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.

Добравшись до дома, он взял нож, разрезал свою наложницу на двенадцать частей и разослал их по всем областям Исраила.

Everyone who saw it was saying to one another, “Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt. Just imagine! We must do something! So speak up!”

Всякий, кто видел это, говорил:

– Такого никогда не видели и не делали со дня выхода исраильтян из Египта до сегодняшнего дня. Подумайте об этом! Посоветуйтесь и скажите, как тут быть!
