Job 9

“Indeed, I know that this is true.
    But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?

– Да, я знаю, что это так.
    Но как смертному оправдаться перед Аллахом?

Though they wished to dispute with him,
    they could not answer him one time out of a thousand.

Если бы он захотел с Ним спорить,
    не смог бы ответить ни на один из тысячи вопросов.

His wisdom is profound, his power is vast.
    Who has resisted him and come out unscathed?

Великий мудростью, крепкий силой –
    кто с Ним спорил и остался цел?

He moves mountains without their knowing it
    and overturns them in his anger.

Он передвигает горы неожиданно
    и даже рушит их в гневе Своём.

He shakes the earth from its place
    and makes its pillars tremble.

Он колеблет землю и сдвигает с места,
    и основания её дрожат.

He speaks to the sun and it does not shine;
    he seals off the light of the stars.

Он солнцу велит, и оно не светит,
    запрещает звёздам сверкать.

He alone stretches out the heavens
    and treads on the waves of the sea.

Он один простирает небеса
    и попирает волны морские.

He is the Maker of the Bear^[a] and Orion,
    the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.

Он сотворил Большую Медведицу и Орион,
    Плеяды и южные созвездия.

He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed,
    miracles that cannot be counted.

Творит Он великое и непостижимое,
    бессчётные чудеса.

When he passes me, I cannot see him;
    when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.

Вот, Он пройдёт передо мной, а я Его не увижу,
    пронесётся мимо, а я Его не замечу.

If he snatches away, who can stop him?
    Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’

Вот, Он схватит, и кто Его остановит?
    Кто скажет Ему: «Что ты делаешь?»

God does not restrain his anger;
    even the cohorts of Rahab cowered at his feet.

Аллах не станет удерживать Свой гнев;
    помощники Рахава^[a] перед Ним падут.

“How then can I dispute with him?
    How can I find words to argue with him?

Как же мне спорить с Ним?
    Где найти слова, чтобы Ему возразить?

Though I were innocent, I could not answer him;
    I could only plead with my Judge for mercy.

Пусть я и невиновен, я не смог бы ответить;
    я бы мог лишь молить Судью моего о милости.

Even if I summoned him and he responded,
    I do not believe he would give me a hearing.

Если бы звал я, и Он ответил, –
    не верю, что Он выслушал бы меня,

He would crush me with a storm
    and multiply my wounds for no reason.

Тот, Кто налетает на меня, словно вихрь,
    умножает мне раны безвинно,

He would not let me catch my breath
    but would overwhelm me with misery.

Кто не даёт мне дух перевести
    и насыщает меня бедой.

If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty!
    And if it is a matter of justice, who can challenge him^[b]?

Если в силе дело, то Он могуч!
    А если в правосудии, то кто приведёт Его на суд?

Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me;
    if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty.

Пусть я невиновен, мои уста осудят меня;
    если даже я безупречен, они вынесут мне приговор.

“Although I am blameless,
    I have no concern for myself;
    I despise my own life.

Я безвинен, но мне уже всё равно;
    я презираю свою жизнь.

It is all the same; that is why I say,
    ‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’

Да, всё одно, поэтому и говорю:
    «Он губит и безвинного, и нечестивого».

When a scourge brings sudden death,
    he mocks the despair of the innocent.

Когда внезапно придёт беда,
    Он смеётся отчаянию невинных.

When a land falls into the hands of the wicked,
    he blindfolds its judges.
    If it is not he, then who is it?

Когда страна в руках у нечестивых,
    Он ослепляет её судей.
    Если не Он, то кто же?

“My days are swifter than a runner;
    they fly away without a glimpse of joy.

Мои дни бегут быстрее гонца,
    они улетают, не видя блага;

They skim past like boats of papyrus,
    like eagles swooping down on their prey.

ускользают прочь, как быстрые папирусные лодки,
    как орлы, что падают на добычу.

If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint,
    I will change my expression, and smile,’

И даже если скажу: «Я позабуду жалобы,
    оставлю мрачный вид и улыбнусь»,

I still dread all my sufferings,
    for I know you will not hold me innocent.

я всё равно боюсь своих страданий,
    зная, что Ты не признаешь меня невинным.

Since I am already found guilty,
    why should I struggle in vain?

А раз я уже обвинён,
    то зачем мне бороться впустую?

Even if I washed myself with soap
    and my hands with cleansing powder,

Даже если вымоюсь снежной водой,
    руки отмою щёлоком,

you would plunge me into a slime pit
    so that even my clothes would detest me.

то и тогда Ты погрузишь меня в грязь,
    что даже моя одежда мной побрезгует.

“He is not a mere mortal like me that I might answer him,
    that we might confront each other in court.

Он не смертный, как я, чтобы мне ответить Ему,
    чтобы сойтись нам в суде на тяжбу.

If only there were someone to mediate between us,
    someone to bring us together,

Нет посредника между нами,
    кто мог бы нас справедливо рассудить,^[b]

someone to remove God’s rod from me,
    so that his terror would frighten me no more.

нет того, кто отвёл бы Его жезл от меня,
    чтобы Его ужас не терзал меня больше.

Then I would speak up without fear of him,
    but as it now stands with me, I cannot.
